Perry Como had it all: good looks, a gorgeously mellow voice and a relaxed manner that made him a hit on both records and TV. Here was a uniquely humble man in an industry of giant egos. He won so many Gold Record awards over a 35 year RCA recording career, Perry refused certification on some of them, also tried suppressing the public disclosure of his total millions of discs sold.

With the assistance of RCA's considerable production team, this vocalist turned out hit after hit even well into an age dominated by belters like Bennett and Laine. Only the inroads made by a younger generation's rock & roll idols (Elvis, etc.) slowed Perry's hit-making machine, yet he still had charting singles in every year (except '64) right up to 1974.

Como's single of "Catch a Falling Star," written by the "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny" guys, was RIAA's very first certified Gold Record. Besides acknowledging a substantial body of best sellers, his 1958 RCA VICTOR compilation, PERRY COMO'S GOLDEN RECORDS (LPM-1981) may also be a celebration of that distinct honor. Seven of his fourteen Billboard #1's (sales, DJs, jukeboxes) are on this LP. Between 1944 and '58, Como had 48 singles on their charts.
.

SIDE ONE NOTES
1.) The hook is five note trombome punches. 2.) Its pre-Hi-Fi range is apparent when compared to the opener. Still, a pleasantly mellow sound. 3.) A romantic ballad ideally suited to Como's vocal style. 4.) A perfect pop single due to scoring, a unique rhythm, and semi-rondo lead and backing vocals. Perry at his coolest. 5.) On this "hep" side, a reference to "Till the End of Time" elicits a shriek from the chorus. 6.) An over-the-top torcher. 7.) Catchy commentary on a dance craze then-curent among the WWII generation.

SIDE TWO NOTES
1.) A "love lost" tune that met with huge sales and an 8 week ride at the top of the charts. 2.) Another perfect pop single. Love how the backing group shouts "Going round and round!" and "Wanna say, wanna say!" 3.) Como does justice to a romantic ballad long associated with wedding days. 4.) A forgettable slow waltz punctuated by celesta, quiet electric guitar and marimbas. 5.) This Tin Pan Alley standby perhaps works best with a barbershop quartet. Perry's version is too saccharine. 6.) A gently swaying number with super lyrics and melody. Love the whistling and oboe obbligatos. 7.) Given to Como on the NYC subway, as novelty songs go this one's particularly annoying. (Kill that snare drum and xylophone!)
