(AVC929, AMSC931, AMSC1257, AMSC1299), Chuck (AMSC1238), Buddy (AMSC1217), Fats (AMSC1272), Jerry Lee (AMSC1235), The Big O (AMSC1232), Little Richard (AMSC1286), Gene Vincent (AMSC1314), Don & Phil (AMSC1277). People tend to think of Bill Haley as a quaint, tame, outdated and totally square early rock and roller from the days of saddle shoes. But the band really rocks - even on the early country stuff. They're just good musicians, even when rocking out with an accordion and steel guitar. The music is solid even when the lyrics aren't (some songs from the "Rockin' Around The World " LP). And there are a lot of pleasant surprises throughout, especially on the "Stage Show" LP. Most of this stuff was out of print by the 1970s so the generation of kids who discovered oldies through "American Graffiti" missed out on some good stuff. And if he hadn't sued to take his really good Trans-World album of earlier material (included here) off the market, rock history books written over the past 40 years may have been much nicer to him and his legacy.
