Sheet Music
No Binding. Condition: Very Good. This is nicely preserved sheet music published by Donaldson, Douglas & Gumble. "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie" was written by Billy Mayhew, and performed by the lovely Nancy Nelson. This particular sheet music has a page of music with additional chorus for piano accordion, arranged by Pietro Deiro. There are four pages of music, plus the exterior six pages in all. The front exterior, with an art deco design, is printed in black, pale lilac and gray, and features a photograph of Nancy Nelson. The rear cover features a promotion for a book published by Donaldson Douglas & Gumble. A number of performers sang this song, and were pictured in a similar style on sheet music, but this copy with Nancy Nelson on the cover is one of the least common. *********************************** IT'S A SIN TO TELL A LIE / Sung by Nancy Nelson / Words and Music by Billy Mayhew / Arrangement for Piano Accordion by Pietro Deino / Published in 1936 by Donaldson, Douglas & Gumble, New York. / Original Sheet Music. ************************************* CONDITION : VERY GOOD Clean and presentable, with the following noted: There is a bit of spotting and scuff to the front, as well as surface rub to the back. Sheet Music. Condition: Very Good. IT'S A SIN TO TELL A LIE Words and Music by Billy Mayhew. Fracis Day & Hunter ltd., London 1936 3pp Sheet Music. This copy is in fine condition. "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie" is a 1936 popular song by Billy Mayhew. Originally introduced by Fats Waller on the 78 rpm record Victor 20-1595, it was revived in 1955 by Somethin' Smith and the Redheads, reaching #7 on the Billboard charts in that year. It was later a Top 40 Country hit for Slim Whitman, reaching #21 on the Top Country Singles chart in 1971, from the album of the same name. John Denver tells a story about the song and does a cover in his 1978 album, Live at the Sydney Opera House (RCA Victor VPL1-7167). Other artists who have recorded versions include Billie Holiday, The Ink Spots, Tony Bennett, Bobbi Martin, Gerry Monroe, Brent Spiner, Lenny Breau, Buddy Greco, Steve Goodman, The Quebe Sisters Band, Ann Breen, Jerry Murad and the Harmonicats, Bobby Vinton, Patti Page, and Vera Lynn. Originally a waltz, during the British Dixieland Revival in the 1950s and 1960s this melody was often played in fast four/four tempo, notably recorded by the Kenny Ball Band. This piece of music came from a substantial library amassed by Maude Beerbohm Tree and later added to by her daughters Viola (1884-1938 and Felicity (1894-1978) Helen Maud Holt (5 October 1863 7 August 1937), professionally known as Mrs Beerbohm Tree and later Lady Tree, was an English actress. She was the wife of the actor Herbert Beerbohm Tree and the mother of Viola Tree, Felicity Tree and Iris Tree. After early stage appearances beginning in 1883, Mrs Tree married and established a theatrical partnership with her husband, in which they appeared in revivals of classic plays and productions of new plays, first at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket and then at Her Majesty's Theatre. Her performances in serious roles were well received, but she was most celebrated for her work in comedy, from Shakespeare to new works by Wilde and others. After her husband's death in 1917, Lady Tree continued to act steadily for almost two decades more until towards the end of her life, in plays and some films, making her last stage appearance in 1935. This is just one of a great many pieces of music and scores that I am selling from this collection on this site. Ref SM1 Size: 3pp.
