“Teardrops on My Guitar” is the second single from Taylor’s 2006 self-titled debut album, Taylor Swift.

In this song, Taylor writes about a boy named Drew who she has a secret crush on even though he is in love with another girl. Taylor thinks that Drew loves this other girl over her because she’s not pretty enough or good enough for him.

I’ll bet she’s beautiful, that girl he talks about
And she’s got everything that I have to live without

The truth is we will never be good enough for everyone. There will almost always be someone who others will consider to be better than us. The more we compare ourselves with others or wish to have what others have, the more insecure we will feel.

Unaware of Taylor’s love for him, Drew talks unashamedly of how this other girl is the right one and of how in love he is with her.

He says he’s so in love, he’s finally got it right
I wonder if he knows he’s all I think about at night

Just because someone makes us feel unwanted or unneeded, the problem doesn’t always lie with us. Despite shedding tears over him, Taylor sincerely hopes that Drew is treated right by this other girl he loves.

Look in those beautiful eyes and know she’s lucky cause

Love often goes unrequited. And if that happens to be the case with us, we don’t have to become bitter about it. We can still wish for happiness and true love to be with those who are the reason for our teardrops.
