In a recent case, an off-duty pilot in the US tried to intentionally shut down a plane’s engine. This off-duty pilot was in the jump seat of the cockpit, in accordance with airline rules. The Alaska Airlines flight was flying from Everett, Washington to San Francisco on October 21 when the off-duty pilot Joseph Emerson tried to pull two handles that are used during firefighting conditions and would have shut the fuel supply to the engine, turning the plane into a glider. The two on-duty pilots reacted swiftly, wrestling the man out of the cockpit. As the pilots called for emergency landing, Joseph Emerson was restrained in the rear of the aircraft.
