3AM Eternal: The Fortunes, “Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again” (1971)

fortunes

The Fortunes’ early 1971 hit sound positively retro for the decade that preceded it. It’s a sixties-style vocal group number by a moderately successful vocal pop band, but its style is such that it could fool the casual listener into thinking they were listening to The Four Seasons. Throw in a wonderfully lush orchestral arrangement on top of those harmonies, and you’ve got the ingredients for a soulful, potent blast of perfect POP music. If you don’t know it already, you’ll quickly find yourself learning the lyrics and singing along to the song every time it comes on the radio. Yeah, it’s one of those kinds of songs. (PS. I wonder if George Harrison knew of that piano lick that sounds awfully close to “Something”?)
