#137 Crazy- Gnarls Barkley

I remember, I remember when I lost my mind/
There was something so pleasant about that place.

Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” has to be one of the biggest cross-over hits on this list. Who can’t appreciate it? Rock n Roll purists can appreciate the beautiful melody and the singing of Ceeloo Green. Hip-hop fans can appreciate the beat. Country fans…well, I don’t know.

The bass-line of “Crazy” really what drives this song. The production really is incredible. There are a lot of moving pieces, specifically in the chorus. You have what appears to be background singers and keyboards, but I am still not sure. To create that unique of a sound is a tribute to the producer.

The lyrics in “Crazy” are a bit opaque. The crazy lifestyle seems to be living life like there is no tomorrow. That is how his heroes have always done it and that is how he is going to do it. Perhaps it is reckless…even crazy, but perhaps the alternative is more crazy: To live your life feeling you have any control.

Crazy Lyrics

I remember when
I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place
Even your emotions have an echo in so much space

And when you’re out there, without care
Yeah I was out of touch
But it wasn’t because I didn’t know enough
I just knew too much

Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Possibly

And I hope that you are having the time of your life
But think twice
That’s my only advice

Come on now, who do you
Who do you, who do you
Who do you think you are?
Ha ha ha, bless your soul
You really think you’re in control?
Well

I think you’re crazy
I think you’re crazy
I think you’re crazy
Just like me

My heroes had the heart
To lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember, is thinking
I wanna be like them
Mmhmm ever since I was little
Ever since I was little it looked like fun
And it’s no coincidence I’ve come
And I can die when I’m done

But maybe I’m crazy
Maybe you’re crazy
Maybe we’re crazy
Probably ooh hmm
