Sclerocactus brevihamatus, commonly referred to as short-spined fishhook cactus, is a globus perennial cactus plant in the cactus family, Cactaceae. Sclerocactus brevihamatus is native to the southwest United States, primarily southern Texas. The main stem of this species is solitary, rarely branches or clumps, and forms a flattened head at maturity. The skin of the stem is dark to gray green and grows up to 1 to 5 inches tall and 2 to 6 inches wide. Spines cover the stem and are long and hooked at the tip with whitish yellow bases and reddish brown tips. Older spines turn gray in color. Flowers bloom from late January to late March and are greenish white to light yellow usually with reddish brown central stripes on the petals. This species is grown as an ornamental plant. Full sun to partial shade in a well draining soil mix is ideal. Water adequately during summer and keep dry during winter as the species is prone to rot. USDA plant hardiness zones 9b to 11a.

Sclerocactus brevihamatus seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be surface sown and not covered or buried. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 75°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 2 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
