Blossfeldia liliputana var. fechseri, sometimes referred to as Blossfeldia fechseri, is a slow growing species of cacti native to Argentina. Blossfeldia liliputana var. fechseri are currently considered to be the smallest species of cacti, usually growing to ½ inch diameter at maturity and rarely ever exceeding inch in diameter (with the exception of grafted plants in cultivation). Blossfeldia liliputana var. fechseri have very small flattened disc-shaped stems with no spines and no ribs. During the dry season, the plants become almost completely dehydrated and severely shrivel and flatten, only to be revived after a coastal fog or light rain. B. liliputana var. fechseri have self-fertile flowers that range in color from white, yellow, and pink, measuring ¼ inch wide and ½ inch long making them massive in comparison to the miniscule stem. The seeds are very tiny and covered with trichomes that are used to grab onto ants to disperse their seeds. Blossfeldia liliputana var. fechseri are hardy to zones 8b to 10b.

Sow the Blossfeldia liliputana var. fechseri seeds directly on the surface of a well draining, fine particulate potting soil. Mist the seeds with a spray bottle until the soil is moist, but not soaking wet, and place the soil inside a plastic bag or cover with plastic cling wrap to retain humidity. Do not water again until the seeds have germinated. Keep the seeds between 70°F and 80°F for best results. Germination typically takes 5 to 30 days to occur. Begin watering the seedlings as needed with a spray bottle. Keep the seedlings inside the plastic bag or under plastic wrap for the first 2 to 3 months of life, then slowly uncover over several days to acclimate the seedlings to ambient humidity. Continue watering with a spray bottle for the first two years of life to not disturb their small root structures.
