Funny how the language of love is all about fire.

Your former relationships are “old flames.” If you love someone, but have not declared yourself, you are “carrying a torch.” When a relationship gets tired and the chemistry is gone, we say “the fire has gone out.” A powerful yearning for someone is a “burning passion.”

I had this song on a 45 rpm vinyl record. I don’t remember what was on the flip side. I was five. I memorized the words and have been howling it ever since. If I’m in the right mood, I will still howl this to Garry. It makes his hearing aids produce feedback.

I particularly like when she sings: “If I’m a slave, then it’s a slave I want to be. DON’T PITY ME. DON’T PITY ME!”

      When I started looking, I realized that almost everyone has recorded some version of it. Louis Armstrong’s was probably the most interesting and Nat King Cole’s version the worst (I love his stuff, but this was not his kind of song). Frankie Laine did a version (yikes). I don’t even remember. I think maybe because the song is so very over the top. It really does make Garry giggle. AND blush 🙂

    I know the song somehow im another language, spanish perhaps? I have my romantic moments, usually if I watch a film about an animal, but otherwise no, not at all. We have a saying in German when you are enthusiastic about something “Feuer und Flamme” – “fire and flames” which I find a good expression. and down to earth.

      This song has been recorded by EVERYONE. It started out as an Argentinian tango, then words were written for it in Spanish, then eventually, English. It was a big hit in 1952 (Georgia Gibbs) … when I was 5. Even then, I thought it was hilarious. Because I know all the words but I don’t have a voice (and this song really requires a VOICE), I sing it to Garry and it always makes him giggle. It is SO totally over the top. Anyway, when i saw today’s prompt, I couldn’t help myself 🙂

      So yes, you are right. You probably heard it first in Spanish because it was originally recorded in Spanish. Sounds better in Spanish, too. All those rolling Rrrrrrs.
