I have chosen to use Blink 182’s music video for their song, ‘The Rock Show’ to analyse.

The music video fits the chosen genre as it is a rock song and the clue is given in the title of the song. You can see that it is a rock song because there are a number of performance elements of the band performing the song throughout the video.

The narrative of this video is that the band have been given money from their production company to create their own music video. The band do random things throughout the video so there is no particular story and I would say that it is a documentary video. The band make it clear what is going on and tell the audience their idea.

We can tell that this is a documentary video because of all the handheld camera shots used and in some of the shots you can even see a cameraman.

I would not say that there is a clear relationship with the visual and lyrics, but there is one clear element which is sometimes amplified throughout the video, such as their song being called ‘The Rock Show’, and the band actually playing a rock show.

There are hints of notions of looking in the music video and we can see this when Tom is watching the television.

I think intertextuality is used because skating videos are often made like this and they have used the same technique and camera angles that would be used in home made skating videos.

There are references throughout the video to show the name of the band and the name of the album using text and logo to advertise. There is a ‘Blink 182’ logo for the name of their band on the side of their van, and an aeroplane pulls along a banner in the sky with the words ‘Take Off Your Pants And Jacket’ which is the name of the album that the song is on.

Blink 182’s star image is punk and they are the stereotypical band to have tattoos and piercings and to play fun rock music. Their star image has not really changed over the years even though this video was filmed in 2001.

This is them 10 years on in 2011 in their video, After Midnight.
