There is no artist in the world like Sia. Try to think about an artist who transformed from an in-demand indie pop vocalist and chanteuse into a global pop superstar more than a decade into their career. Try to imagine that same global pop superstar writing and producing music for many of the other most iconic stars of our time. And then let yourself think about how Sia Furler has racked up more worldwide streams and hits (6 in the “Billions Club” on Spotify, and counting...) all while never showing her face, never compromising her artistic vision, and never letting anyone else define pop stardom for her. It’s staggering to imagine any artist doing just one of these things, let alone all of them, over the course of a career that continues to reach new heights. It’s worth repeating: there is no artist in the world like Sia.

Some quick background: Sia Furler grew up in Australia the daughter of musicians. Starting out in Adelaide, singing in bands and releasing her own music in 1997, Sia moved to London and released her debut album Healing Is Difficult in 2001. That same year she first appeared as part of Zero 7 on their debut album Simple Things - a collaboration that would continue with two more albums and a series of world tours. 2004’s Colour The Small One included “Breathe Me,” which famously soundtracked the final scene of the final episode of HBO’s Six Feet Under. More albums followed (2008’s some people have REAL problems, 2010’s We Are Born) before Sia began writing and co-writing, and featuring on songs for other artists, including Rhianna, David Guetta, Flo Rida, all of whom had massive, chart-topping hits thanks to Sia.

Her song “Chandelier,” from 2014’s Grammy-nominated 1000 Forms Of Fear, not only changed the way pop music sounds, but it revolutionized the art of music video with the groundbreaking clip starring Maddie Ziegler. More worldwide smashes followed in quick succession: “Elastic Heart,” “Big Girls Cry,” “Alive,” “Together,” “Dusk ’Til Dawn” with Zayn, and “Cheap Thrills” - a Billboard number one single for 8 nonconsecutive weeks. Over 50 billion audio streams don’t lie. Her Christmas album, released in 2017, has one of the top 10 most streamed holiday songs of all time. She directed her first feature film, titled Music, in 2021, and in 2022, a song from 2016’s This Is Acting - “Unstoppable” - became a viral sensation, pushing it past a billion plays on Spotify and onto the charts again in multiple countries around the world seven years after its release. Meanwhile, Sia co-wrote songs for other icons like Miley Cyrus, Paris Hilton, and more; wrote songs for countless films and TV show soundtracks; gave away money to Survivor contestants (her favorite show!); put her energy into animal rights advocacy; and more.

And now - there is Reasonable Woman, Sia’s first proper album since 2016. Reasonable Woman is so filled to the brim with pop perfection, it almost overwhelms with how effortless it is for her to craft such instantly connectable songs. The collection is everything Sia does best, and the sonic equivalent of a myriad of things: an empowering embrace, secrets told late at night, going to the best party in the world, the vulnerability of declaring you love someone, the steadfast determination to keep going, even if your love isn’t returned; the messiness of being human; the exuberance of being human. In essence, it is life - happening to us, happening for us; the songs on Reasonable Woman mirror back to us being alive with every chorus.

KNOCKED LOOSE:

As Knocked Loose chipped away at what would become their third album, they felt the pressure from all sides. Internally, there was the need to challenge themselves as songwriters while retaining the merciless intensity and unflinching honesty that have always been their calling cards. Externally, there was a whole new set of eyes on the hard-touring Louisville quintet, following a banner year in which they’d brought their underground-seasoned sound to some of the world’s biggest stages, finding themselves the unlikely viral darlings of both Coachella and Bonnaroo.

The creative process was arduous, with the band writing close to 40 songs across a span of four years before locking in the 10 tracks that make up new LP You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To. But in the end, vocalist Bryan Garris, guitarists Isaac Hale and Nicko Calderon, bassist Kevin Otten and drummer Kevin “Pac Sun” Kaine honed a diverse, cohesive and savagely intense album that both sums up the massive strides they’ve taken during their decade as a band, and asserts their boundless potential going forward.

Raging lead single “Blinding Faith” skillfully wields whiplash tempo changes in service of a scathing indictment of religious groupthink. “Don’t Reach for Me” combines the band’s signature frenzied attack with deliberate catchiness and refreshing sonic variety. While “Suffocate,” featuring pop-meets-metal trailblazer Poppy, contrasts an oppressive heaviness befitting the title with a dance-y, syncopated groove and, midway through, the most concussive reggaeton rhythm you’ve ever heard.

The album title — a phrase that a fellow passenger said to Garris to soothe his severe air-travel anxiety during a particularly trying flight — strikes a note of reassurance. But glossing over negative emotions isn’t what Knocked Loose are about. The new songs find them plumbing new depths of loathing — directed both inward and outward — and tortuous anguish. Musically, they’re leaning into their most extreme impulses, from blastbeat-driven fury, chaotic turbulence and seismic breakdowns, while seasoning the mix with ear-catching auxiliary percussion, evocative samples and shout-along hooks, all interwoven to perfection by Grammy-nominated, pop-savy producer Drew “WZRD BLD” Fulk.

There’s no ceiling for hardcore in 2024 — even an outfit as uncompromising as Knocked Loose can turn up in mainstream-adjacent spaces and win over new fans. But there’s a center to what they do that will never change: uncompromising heaviness, both sonically and thematically. What is evolving is their drive to find new ways to convey that heaviness, and add tasteful variety that only highlights their undiminished ferocity. Everywhere Knocked Loose have been is here on this record — but so is everywhere they may yet go.

"Manhattan Fire’ is a collection of demos from prolific Brooklyn outfit The Men, revealing early versions of the tracks that would go on to make up their 2023 LP ‘New York City’ – described by Pitchfork as “an unpretentious garage-punk racket […] summoning the snottiest ghosts of the city’s punk past.” Recorded in mono and with a drum machine by founding members Mark Perro and Nick Chiericozzi over lockdown in late 2020 – before being shelved for the full-band, live-to-tape affair of the final LP – ‘Manhattan Fire’ shows a new side to those songs that's even more primitive and rough around the edges, as well as previously unheard tracks that never made it onto the album.

Clancy marks Twenty One Pilots’ first studio album in three years and follows their RIAA Gold certified LP, Scaled And Icy. With details of the release teased to fans earlier this month via cryptic mailings and covert artswaps on streaming services, “Overcompensate” welcomes listeners back to the band’s immersive world of ‘Trench.’ Layers of synths build over a racing breakbeat in the song - a skilled passage of alternative dynamics, flexing in time, and ready to explode. Having amassed over 33 billion streams worldwide and over 3 million tickets sold across global headline tours, the Columbus, OH based duo of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun have established themselves as one of the most successful bands of the 21st century and redefined the sound of a generation.  Co-produced by Joseph and Paul Meany, Clancy marks the final chapter in an ambitious multi-album narrative first introduced in the band's 2015 multi-Platinum breakthrough, Blurryface.  Furthermore, Clancy’s forthcoming release on May 17th coincides with the 9th anniversary of Blurryface, which was released exactly nine years prior to the day. Twenty One Pilots extended the ambitious concept laid out in Blurryface with their 2018 Platinum-certified album TRENCH.  Featuring the multi-Platinum and Platinum singles “Chlorine,” “My Blood” and the GRAMMY® Award-nominated “Jumpsuit,” the album graced spots on “Best of” year-end lists by Billboard, KERRANG!, Alternative Press, and Rock Sound—who placed it at #1.

Alternative rock group The Early November is thrilled to announce their forthcoming Self-Titled album, set for release on June 14th via Pure Noise Records. Featuring lead single “What We Earn”, The Early November is a 10 song collection that pays homage to who the band is, was, and has yet to become.
On the new single, frontman Ace Enders shares: “’What We Earn’ was the first song written for the album, and probably the most intense as well. It’s about the realization that the glass ceiling over our heads is supported by the walls we build throughout our lives.”
After two decades, it would be all too easy for a band to just phone it in—capitalize on the fanbase they’ve built up in that time and just make a watered-down version of themselves. Not for The Early November, however. Ever since forming in New Jersey in 2001, the band, now consisting of front man Ace Enders and founding drummer Jeff Kummer— have constantly been striving to find the best and most definitive version of themselves. With this self-titled record, the seventh studio album of their career, the duo have come as close as is possible to doing so. It’s an album that ties the past, present and future all together, and as such, it marks what Enders calls a “period or exclamation point in our sentence”. It’s not a new beginning, per se, but nevertheless something emphatic that signifies, in Enders’ words again, “a pivotal moment” for them both.

..Is Committed represents both a return to form and a mid-career left turn. Bemis still traffics in
exaggeration and Jewish humor, but the hyperbole has been tempered by the blows of reality.
This is no longer the angst of post-adolescence, but the grim phantasms of adulthood. Coming
full circle in a sense, Bemis says these are the most autobiographical songs that he’s written since
high school.
As with any Say Anything record, the songs are rollicking and self-referential, jampacked with
meta-references and in-jokes. Before “lore” became a Gen Z cliché, Bemis was employing it was
still called “world-building.” The opener “BE, CHILDREN (INTRODUCTION TO THE
REUNION RECORD)” starts off with what might as well be a mission statement: “to the self-
indulgent/indulge yourself with me.” It’s partially a satire of a reunion song, but filled with a
jarring and uncomfortable honesty that belies the tongue-in-cheek humor. It also rocks hard.
Bemis did not bring Say Anything back to make an Iron & Wine record.

Tools of Oppression / Rule by Deception" is the new full length album by The Hope Conspiracy. The album was engineered by Kurt Ballou and Zach Weeks at God City Studios. Artwork for the release was created by acclaimed artist Alexander Heir (Death/Traitors).

This is true sonic violence aimed at political division, economic manipulation, war profiteering, media propaganda and other vile forms of global oppression.

Air raid sirens wail as the foreboding "Those Who Gave Us Yesterday" and "The Prophets and Doom" explode forth like burning shrapnel. The hell ride continues with "A Struggle For Power" and "Live In Fear", two vicious blasts supercharged with malice and contempt. "Shock By Shock" and "Of A Dying Nation" introduce doom and gloom heaviness, grinding down the tempo to a mid-paced barrage. "Confusion/Chaos/Misery" picks up the pace, going scorched-earth policy on the sociopolitical nightmares that ensnare us all while "Broken Vessels" plows into overdrive about the opioid crisis and addiction as a whole. This leads to "The West Is Dead" a dystopian hook laden hardcore anthem, and epic closer "The Specter Looms"; An ominous soundtrack to the steady decline of our modern age.

There is no question, The Hope Conspiracy is back to make a cold hard statement about existence in the end times

"The bi-coastal quartet fleshes out classic elements of hardcore and metal with industrial, shoegaze, and noise. Even their love songs feel extreme." - Pitchfork

CANDY return with their new album, It's Inside You. A brazen take on hardcore, metal, and disparate electronics and experimental soundscapes, It's Inside You sees CANDY take another step forward with a compelling, extreme, and one-of-a-kind take on the genre.

From the frenzied album opener "eXisTenZ", CANDY's intent is clear; It's Inside You kicks off as violently as possible. Cited as thriving in "this jumble of gothic industrial and digitized metal" by Pitchfork, the single minute, thirty-second track twists and turns as a contorted thesis statement for what will follow. Tracks like "Dehumanize Me" continue this trend, establishing an interplay between ferocious hardcore stomps helmed by guitarist Michael Quick, with pulse-pounding, electronic rhythms set against this monstrous riffing. "Dreams Less Sweet" crashes and bashes onto the record, while vocalist Zachary Quiram mourns the modern condition: "dreams laid dead/stuck grieving/how do you fight the feeling?/are we living in a world just to die?"

Elsewhere on the record, tracks like "Love Like Snow" showcase a different side of the band. Electronic, mechanical melodies are set against desperate cries for human connection. It's Inside You flexes more than just muscular Hardcore brutality. "Dancing to the Infinite Beat" and "Hypercore" also see raw emotion laid bare against frenetic, electronic punishment before crescendoing into cathartic, ear-worm choruses.

With It's Inside You, CANDY signals the future for what Hardcore, Metal, and Electronics can truly be.

"Light Of Death" is the 15 song sophomore album from Umbra Vitae. Recorded by Kurt Ballou and Zach Weeks at God City Studios and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege. "Leave Of Absence" emerges with a spine-chilling violin swell before erupting into duel guitar driven madness courtesy of Sean Martin (Twitching Tongues, ex-Hatebreed) and Mike McKenzie (The Red Chord). Umbra Vitae stay redlined with "Belief Is Obsolete" and "Clear Cutter", showcasing the electrifying rhythm section of Jon Rice (Uncle Acid, Tsjuder) and Greg Weeks (The Red Chord). Hook-laden "Anti-Spirit Machine" then takes center stage as a war cry for the downtrodden. From here Umbra Vitae continue to smash and thrash everything in sight. The discordant "Reality In Retrograde" races with a grinding blur into the lumbering "Past Tense" and darkly seductive "Velvet Black". Two songs that are metallic heaviness incarnate. "Twenty-Twenty Vision", "Algorithm Of Fear", and "Empty Vessel" then pick up the intensity, propelled by the poignant lyrical themes and inhuman vocal deliveries of Jacob Bannon (Converge). Lastly, the trinity of slow-crawl "Cause & Effect", ultra-violent "Deep End", and whirlwind "Nature vs. Nurture" continue to bludgeon, ushering in the interlinked "Fatal Flaw" and "Light Of Death" as the vicious finale to this modern metal masterpiece.

In 2016, Foals singer Yannis Philippakis was offered the opportunity of a lifetime: a two-day session with the great drummer Tony Allen. The pair quickly established an intuitive telepathy, and the music, germinated from jams and loops, and was complemented by a unique atmosphere of two cultures and creatives colliding. Joined by Tony’s regular collaborators Vincent Taeger (percussion, marimba), Vincent Taurelle (keys) and Ludovic Bruni (bass, guitar) that first meeting resulted in a handful of near complete songs, which were further developed during a couple subsequent sessions. But between scheduling issues and Covid restrictions, the recordings were not completed before Tony passed away in April 2020. Yannis felt a deep duty to complete the project, not only as a bittersweet way to honor and celebrate his old friend, but also because Tony had been so eager to share these songs with the world. band in “musical purgatory” due to another aborted label deal. “We have no expectations this
time.”
The previously released “Elegant Strangers” is a melodic ode to the drug-fueled L.A. faux
schmooze culture, “dressed for the morning sun/Mirrors and razors,” already charting at
SiriusXM’s Alt Nation. The opening disco-inflected track, “Falling So Hard,” offers a longing
song for a lover “oceans apart.” It’s a theme explored as well on “Nobody Loves Like You,” with
Keith’s falsetto and funky guitar solo underlining a tale of missing someone “half the world
away,” a dance-rock track that combines the club floor and the furthest reaches of the arena. The
epic orchestral intro to the geo-political tract “Don’t Let Love be a Stranger,” “Can’t Be Alone
Tonight” and “On a Wave,” inspired by Keith’s passion for surfing, sport an anthemic melodic
drive with whisper-to-a-scream dynamics.
“It’s not really about the water, though I used to love to surf,” says Keith about “On a Wave,”
“It’s like riding that emotional roller coaster, trying to maintain your balance despite all of life’s
ups and downs.”
“Romans” examines a dysfunctional relationship Jeffery experienced while in L.A. “We were
seemingly under control, like Romans, but we were really just bullshitting and using one
another,” explains Keith, a Pisces and admitted “hopeless” romantic. “Animals” and “Do Me
This Way” offer thumping, funky odes to unbridled, passionate lust.
“’Animals’ is just about the chemistry between people,” observed Keith. “The coy games that
couples play, the dance of courtship which results in marriage and kids or is simply a one-night
stand. ‘Do Me This Way’ is about indulging in all the wrong shit in L.A., when you should be
focusing on what you need to be doing.”
“All for nothing, all for show/If all else fails, at least we rode,” “On a Wave”
Atlas Genius started out in Victor Harbor, a tiny town an hour south of Adelaide on the coast of
southern Australia in 2011 with Keith and his brothers Michael on drums and Steve on bass and
keys along with keyboardist Darren Sell, working out of a home studio they built with funds
from playing at local bars. Signed worldwide to Warner Records, Atlas Genius released a three-

song EP and two full-length albums. The debut, When It Was Now, dropped in 2013, producing
the SiriusXM Alt Nation hit, “Trojans,” the album peaking at #3 on the Billboard Alternative
chart (where it remained for over 52 straight weeks), and #34 on the Billboard 200, with a
second single, “If So,” hitting #8 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. Inanimate Objects
came out two years later, with the first single, “Molecules,” going Top 10 on Billboard’s
Alternative Airplay chart, where it spent 22 weeks before the band was unceremoniously
dropped.
“We have to remind people that we’re still here,” acknowledges Keith. “I feel very positive about
things now. You have to go through a really shit period to appreciate what you’ve got. We’re
ready to put the past behind us, to emerge from the ‘End of the Tunnel’ into the sunlight. We’re
excited to start playing these new songs for people. It’s about time.
“This is by far our strongest album from front to back, mainly because we had the time to get it
right. These 11 songs are the best from the more than hundred I’ve written over that time. I’m
just very happy with how it turned out.”

It’s new for a hardcore band to be big, unprecedented for one from Australia. Big in two ways—for hardcore kids from Sydney, playing good shows worldwide, proudly representing their scene. And second, for any band from the scene playing hard music, crossing over hard into the larger world. It’s quick work to find SPEED doing both: headlining shows in England, New York, Japan, globally, turning in blazing sets at Sound & Fury and This Is Hardcore, among other massive heavy music festivals. Seven-figure viewed videos—their set at S&F, short films for their songs—and tunes headlining video game soundtracks. Famous folks wearing their jerseys, people new to the scene showing up to more gigs. SPEED know that because of these global crossover moments, they might be some people’s first hardcore band; the idea is that they’ll get introduced not only to SPEED, but also to the scene and the people behind it. Find SPEED, and you’ll find Sydney hardcore; find a band making hard music, find more energy back home.

After crisscrossing the nation for the last half-decade looking for a home,PokeyLaFargefound himself in Mid-Coast Maine. Upon arriving, the Illinois-born singer/songwriter/actor pursued a major life change, working 12-hour days on a local farm—aturn of events that catalyzed an extraordinary burst of creativity and redefined hissense of purpose as an artist.Rhumba Countrywas initially shaped from materialthat emerged while LaFarge was deep in work on the farm. “I’d be pushing a plowor scattering seeds, and the songs would just come to me,” he recalls. “It wastremendously inspirational and made me realize that apart from singing, farming isperhaps the oldest human art form.” While farming, LaFarge began dreaming up akaleidoscopic sound informed by his love of music from far-ranging eras and cornersof the globe, including mambo, tropicália, rocksteady, and mid-century Americanrock-and-roll. “The songs that naturally come to me are upbeat and make you wannadance or at least bop your head—they’re all very colorful,” says LaFarge. “I used tothink of my music in dark blue, but now I see it in technicolor.” Co-produced alongwith Chris Seefried and Elliot Bergman and recorded in L.A., the resulting RhumbaCountry is an invitation to come together to celebrate life and love.

Emily Nennihas written a follow-up to 2022’s critically acclaimed record, OnThe Ranch. Her debut album garnered her much success and introduced her toa devoted audience of music fans who celebrate the traditional side of countrymusic while embracing the modern indie aesthetic that comes with that nod tothe past. While writing her latest record,Drive & Cry, Nenni looked in the rearviewmirror for inspiration but kept focus on the sound that she has become known for.“This is the first record I have completely written on my own. I spent a good bit ofsolitary time ruminating on things that had happened over the last year or two.Rethinking what I’m doing, how I’m doing it, who with, even in just the everyday.Change is hard but also such a gift.”Nenni worked with producer John James Tourville (The Deslondes, Sunny War)to broaden her sound and bring in nuance to the recording. The record wasengineered by Jake Davis and mixed by Matt Ross-Spang in Memphis, TN. When Richard Thompson began writing songs for his latest album, Ship to Shore, the artist was instinctively drawn to his own musical roots, employing them in the service of fashioning a deep and diverse 12-track collection that pulls from various styles, genres and eras, but remains unmistakably Richard Thompson. There’s the rumbling, Motown-style rhythm that propels “Trust,” and the straightforward riff-rock of “Turnstile Casanova.” The drone-y “The Old Pack Mule,” an “old man’s song” that takes musical cues from 1600s-era European music, and “Life’s a Bloody Show,” an ode to “snake-oil salesmen and hucksters” that floats on a glammy, cabaret-like melody that’s “almost like a parody of a Noël Coward song, or something from Berlin in the 1920s,” Thompson says. “I liked the idea of having a strong base to work from and reaching out from there,” he says. “And I think of my base as being British traditional music, but there’s also Scottish music, there’s Irish music. There’s jazz and country and classical. As far as I’m concerned, once you establish your base you can reach out anywhere. It’ll still be you ringing through, wherever you decide to go musically.”

For over 20 years, The Decemberists have been one of the most original, daring, and thrilling American rock bands. Their distinctive brand of hyperliterate folk-rock set them apart from the start, releasing nine full-length albums that are unbound by genre and highly ambitious. Now the beloved indie band is back with their first new album in six years, As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again - not only the longest Decemberists album to date (and their first intentional, proper double-LP) but also their most empathetic and accessible, its 13 songs like semaphores of mutual recognition for our fraught times and faint hope. The first dozen songs are punchy, pithy gems all, reflections on mortality and loneliness, longing and cynicism, expectation and unease. The band animates them brilliantly, pushing out and pulling in at the perfect moments. John Moen practically dances beneath the jangle of opener “Burial Ground,” breathing the life into this song about spiraling toward the end. From the irrepressible “Oh No!" and guileless tenderness and absolute surrender of “All I Want Is You,” to the romantic ghost story that shimmers behind pedal steel in spite of the specter in "Long White Veil," these 12 songs alone would constitute a dazzling Decemberists album, rich with woe and love, anxiety and honesty. But a keening little choir and arid electric guitar invoke “Joan in the Garden,” the band’s first full-on prog escapade since The Crane Wife. Though rooted in doubt, much like the album it ends, “Joan in the Garden” ultimately lands as a celebration of music’s ability to convey valence and ambiguity, to frame an endlessly complicated story in instantly compelling terms.

This, songwriter Colin Meloy will tell you proudly, is the best Decemberists albums and perhaps the ultimate realization of 22 years of work. In many ways, As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again feels like an aptly titled renewal for The Decemberists. The first full-length release on YABB Records, the band’s own label, after a run of nearly two decades with Capitol. As they were once, here are the Decemberists again, now an independent band empowered by singing stories that sound instantly familiar and convey some bit of hard-won wisdom.

These days, every artist’s album needs to have a story. The music can’t speak for itself.

But after 22 records, why can’t Ani DiFranco’s work speak for itself? Yes, her forthcoming album is shaped by stories — ones about reproductive freedom, the double-edged sword of the pandemic, identity and ever-evolving belief systems that have shaped each of its 11 songs. It was paramount to the folk-feminist hero that listeners not be saddled with preconceived notions while diving into her 23rd album Unprecedented Sh!t. “I believe there is a rhyme and a reason as to why these songs have come together in this way now and I want people to experience this album as a journey, a piece of art, without being influenced by a cacophony of surrounding narratives.”

While many of DiFranco’s albums were made more insularly, she’s opened herself up to collaboration in recent years. For 21 of DiFranco’s 22 albums, she opted to self-produce. With Unprecedented Sh!t, she wanted to try working with a producer and tapped BJ Burton, who produced one of her favorite albums, Bon Iver’s 22, A Million.

The title Unprecedented Sh!t is not only representative of how much of a sonic departure the 11-track album is from Ani’s other work, but also a political and social commentary on the current state of the world. “We find ourselves in unprecedented times in many ways, faced with unprecedented challenges. So, our responses to them and our discourse around them, need to rise to that level.”

Indie Retail Vinyl Variant: - Handwritten note from DW - Personal photos - Alternate cover image - signed insert and numbered "It took me a while to make this record - my whole adult life essentially. Early last year, I was struggling to find things to sing about, or reasons to sing at all. A series of failures led me to a point where I entered an addiction counseling program and committed myself to getting to the bottom of myself, right down to the stuff I kept from everyone. It’s been a process. Since then, I’ve held myself to a high standard of total honesty always. I shaved my head. I changed my mind about a lot of things. It turns out the truth really does set you free. Eventually, new songs started to reappear. These are those songs. I suppose it’s a sort of farewell to the guy I was pretending to be. I’ve struggled in the past with the character I inhabit in many of my songs. I seem wise, magnanimous, chivalrous. I was trying to will myself into a person I might love and respect.
While I’ve always aimed for rigorous honesty in my songwriting, this time I got to push off from the actual bottom of myself. I won’t be cheesy and say I feel like this is my first album, but it certainly feels like a new start. I hope you find the songs useful."

For singer/songwriter Jesse Daniel, country music is nothing short of a life force. Hailing from a rural mountain town on California’s Central Coast, the Austin-based artist first explored his innate passion for music by playing drums in punk bands, then drifted down a troubled path that included years of battling addiction and spending time in and out of jail and rehab. As he took his first steps toward getting clean, Daniel immersed himself in the pure joy of writing country songs, fully embracing the unbridled vitality of California country and bringing a lived-in honesty to his lyrical storytelling. Since releasing his 2018 self-titled debut on his own record label, he’s earned great esteem as a country traditionalist and built a wildly devoted international following—thanks in no small part to his freewheeling live show and tendency to tour nearly 200 days a year. Recently signed to Lightning Rod Records, Daniel now offers up his fourth studio album Countin’ The Miles: a high-powered body of work born from his ardent belief in preserving country’s legacy.

Rich Ruth, the recording project of Nashville multi-instrumentalist Michael Ruth, makes wholly immersive instrumental songs that thread the line between gleefully adventurous and calmingly meditative. His music starts in solitude with mesmerizing loops and drones anchoring the arrangements that are eventually colored in by an eclectic cast of collaborators. The resulting exploratory compositions, which combine spiritual jazz, synth-infused post-rock, and cosmic ambient, often beguile but they always soar with a palpable immediacy. His new album Water Still Flows is both his heaviest and his most cathartic. Across seven songs, the LP is both a document of an artist stretching the limits of his process and a testament to how songwriting can be a personally grounding force.

The color green can represent many things. It can symbolize money, of course, but also weed. And envy. It implies newness, the rebirth of spring, but it can also evoke illness and infection. It’s an apt name for a band that is defined by its adaptability, by its knack for doing many different things all at once. On the Color Green’s second full-length—their first as a quartet—they ground their cosmic jams in earthy melodies, drawing from ‘60s SoCal folk-r0ck, ‘70s classic rock, ‘80s underground rock, ‘90s psychedelic dance-rock, and many other sources. In the two years the band has been touring, it has already shared stages with a range of groups that reflect both the sophistication and the wild malleability of their sound, including Fuzz, Kikagaku Moyo, Circles Around the Sun, and Young Guv. “When we play live, I don’t really know what’s going to happen,” says guitarist Noah Kohll. “You really have no idea what you’re going to get with this band, which keeps things fresh for us and maybe makes the live experience special.” Adds drummer Corey Rose, “One thing about this band that I really appreciate is that we can camouflage into any environment or any show. We can play with Hiss Golden Messenger and lean into that funky country vibe, or we can play with the Brian Jonestown Massacre and get evil. We all love a variety of music, so let’s not put ourselves in a box.” That wild, mercurial quality is reflected on Fool’s Parade, a meditation on loss, grief, confusion, frustration, and the clarity to which they all lead. Their songs are vehicles for self-explorations, not just a means of putting their feelings into lyrics and notes but molding them, night after night, into different shapes to get different insights. “I feel like that’s the endless spiritual journey of this band,” says Madden. “There’s always this thing that is mysterious, that you can never put your finger on. Music is a way to give yourself ground within the unknown. It’s a way to convene with something outside yourself, whether you call that the muse or God or the collective unconsciousness or whatever. Maybe that’s relatable to people because we live in a very noisy and confusing world. Everybody’s trying to find that ground.”

“There's a lot of existential stuff in these songs,” says Amos Lee. “If you really listen to what's in between the lines, there's a lot of grappling with your place in the world, grappling with loss.  There's a lot of grappling with the balance between bailing out the boat and rowing at the same time—the experience of writing music and playing songs while trying, as we all are right now, to make sense of a world that feels like it's changing really quickly.”  On his eleventh studio album, Transmissions, singer-songwriter Lee continues to expand his sonic range while sharpening his closely observed lyrics that squarely address death, aging, and love. The force behind such acclaimed albums as Mission Bell and Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song, ever since his gold-selling 2005 debut Lee has been known for his association with a long list of collaborators and touring partners, from Paul Simon to Zac Brown Band. For the new project, he craved a return to an old-school style of recording, working with his longtime band in a studio in rural Marlboro, New York that was built by drummer Lee Falco and his dad out of reclaimed wood from an old church (“it’s exactly what you’d think a studio in upstate New York should be,” notes Lee). Playing live on the floor for long hours, in close quarters, they were able to capture the album’s twelve songs in less than a week. “I really wanted us to be all in the room, making music together, listening to each other and responding to each other,” says Lee. “In this age where you can do everything at home and fly it in, there’s something really beautiful about getting in a room and starting at the top, the drummer counting in the song and everybody just playing. I would call it vulnerability.”
