Saving Jane Responds To Taylor Swift Plagiarism Claims

Saving Jane’s lead singer Marti Dodson tweeted today on the buzz that Taylor Swift ripped off their song,  “Girl Next Door”.

After fans compared the songs having similar lyrics, Marti seems to be looking at things with a glass half full and has welcomed the opportunity to partner with Taylor in the future.

Her Tweets include:

This isn’t the first time Taylor Swift has allegedly taken inspiration from another artist for her music. Last year, Swift grabbed headlines when it came to Luna Halo’s song, ‘Untouchable’. You can read that story here.

After listening to ‘Girl Next Door’ I can understand why Saving Jane has not tried to sue Taylor Swift. Other than a few words that are the same and the general theme of the two songs, they are nothing alike. The tempo is different, the message in the song is different, and the perspective of the singers is different. Almost all songs are based on relationships. Starting, stopping, being in, or wanting to be in.

I’m SO happy I re-found Saving Jane!!! The Girl Next Door was my theme song when I was 7 (yes, I was dealing with that stuff – minus the boyfriend – even then) but we eventually forgot it. The I heard Taylor and re-rembered the song. Sang it in the talent show. Fairly sure my nemesis knew it was about too… But I won! The STUDENTS picked me! That song gave me and all the other picked-on kids courage to stand up for ourselves. Now we’re proud to be band geeks, and little miss Head Cheerleader isn’t quite so bad anymore.

This article left out the next question. In context below:

[Taylor changed the melody of the song for her version. What did you think about that?]

She changed the verse quite a bit. The chorus is still pretty true to what it was. When I first heard it, it caught me off guard because I didn’t even recognize the melody of the verse and some of the arrangement. But she’s one of, if not the biggest artist in the world right now, and when she wants to change a little thing about your song, I’m fine with it, you know?

[Did that make her a co-writer on the song?]

Yeah, we gave her a little bit of the co-writing credit on it. I felt like she changed it significantly enough.
