On the motorway, there are signs to Amity, a reference to Jaws, the Overlook Hotel, a reference to The Shining, and Camp Crystal, a reference to Friday the 13th. The videos are almost identical, except for a few minor changes in order for the two songs to sync up with the video. There are two versions of this video, one to fit the original mix and one to fit the Soulchild remix. In between these various encounters the Gorillaz pass and perform things in time with the rhythm-such as a field of nodding donkeys, or the light posts passing them at the beginning, and a couple of sections where the buggy does several versions of the wheelie (including side wheelies, otherwise known as Skiing) and even appears to break the sound barrier. The members of Gorillaz appear to have black ash all over them from the blast.
Murdoc tries to blow up the moose with a pair of missiles, but the moose sneezes right before impact, sending them back to the car, which explodes and skids along the highway on fire. It features Gorillaz riding in their Geep (as mentioned in the 2005 MTV Cribs episode, featuring the Gorillaz) along a twisted highway, encountering roller coaster style loops, a killer UFO, and – when Murdoc decides not to take an exit leading toward a church – a giant moose. The video, directed by Jamie Hewlett and Pete Candeland, is animated, both in 2-D and 3-D. Tina Weymouth and Miho Hatori contributed backing vocals to "19–2000", whilst Damon Albarn performed the vocals on the verses. Mendis was unsure which track to choose, and only when he was told that Jamie Hewlett was already working on the video for "19-2000", did he make his decision. Mendis was given a copy of all their demos and finished tracks for the album, being told to "pick that you can produce, remix or whatever into a hit single". Mendis was asked to remix a track off the album in the hope that it would give it crossover potential, in the same way as the Ed Case remix of " Clint Eastwood" had. In 2001, the song was given the UK Garage treatment in its remix by producer Ed Case, which was, in the UK, a bigger radio hit than the album cut."19-2000" released was accompanied by a completely new version of the song, called the " Soulchild Remix", which was produced by music producers Damien Mendis and Stuart Bradbury. Gorillaz returned to this subject matter, at least nominally, on 2005’s “Dirty Harry,” named as a nod to one of Clint’s better-known movies. In the former movie, Clint’s nameless character says that he has “sunshine in a bag,” gold coins. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and Gunsmoke are alluded to in the song. The song’s title is a reference to Clint Eastwood, the actor who has portrayed icons of rugged manliness and badassery perhaps better than any other.
There is also a possible undercurrent of drug imagery: sunshine in a bag could refer to weed or psychedelic drugs, and Del’s possession of Russel may be a metaphor for an individual under the influence. One might consider Del to represent the spirit of creative enterprise that pervades humanity the desire in “every sprouting tree, every child of peace” to make something beautiful. The conflict is reminiscent of that between archetypal id and ego. The driving theme of the song manifests itself in the contrast between 2D’s mellow, passive hook and Del’s rap that calls the listeners to action. It uses this story as a starting point for a conversation about the ego versus the spirit. It features Del Tha Funky Homosapien on the mic and is produced in large part by Dan the Automator.Ĭonceptually, the song is part of the Gorillaz canon/mythology, with Del Tha Funky Homosapian playing Del Tha Ghost Rapper, a spirit possessing Russel, the band’s drummer, whose eyes are clouded over with the spirits of his friends who were killed in a drive-by shooting in Brooklyn. The funky aesthetic of the video and the song’s menacing, mellow beat made it one of the singles to bump in that year. “Clint Eastwood” is the phenomenal debut single from “virtual band” Gorillaz, dropped in 2001.
