MAUREEN MCGOVERN (US)

Born: 27 July 1949
Full name: Maureen Therese McGovern

Maureen was born in Youngstown, Ohio, a city about halfway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Her father was in a singing quartet and they would practice at the McGovern home. This would, in part, inspire Maureen to become a singer and her family have noted that, as a small child, she would sing herself to sleep with songs she had heard on the radio. When she finished school, she would work as a secretary while singing in a local folk band called Sweet Rain in the evenings. A demo of her singing came to the attention of Russ Regan, the head of 20th Century Records. At the time Russ was looking for someone to record a version of the song ‘The Morning After’ from the film ‘The Poseidon Adventure’. The version in the film was performed by the character Nonnie which was played by Carol Lynley. She would lip sync the lyrics to the soundtrack sung by a singer called Renee Armand. McGovern’s version was the one that was released to coincide with the film and it would spend 2 weeks at the top of the US charts. McGovern would go on to see 5 further US hits, but only 1 of those would make the top 20 of the charts and that was ‘Different Worlds’ which was the theme tune to a TV show called ‘Angie’.
