According to a comment from SVR Music in the post, there will also be a vinyl release. Check the SVR Music Facebook page for more updates here.

One observant fan noted the words “Major Spindel” on the strap. Sweet. As mentioned in a recent concert, the song was written in memory of Matty Spindel.

‘Automatic’ release scheduled for Aug. 4 (with song list)

As announced at a recent concert, Rick Springfield’s new CD will be coming out soon and will have 20 new songs!

It’s now listed on Amazon and ready for pre-order. It’s scheduled for an Aug. 4 release (aka my birthday week… what a great gift – thanks, RS!)

Here’s the “Automatic” description:

The album, described by Springfield, as 20 new songs stylistically somewhere between “Working Class Dog” and “Tao”. Sonically, the album sees Springfield returning to his first love of guitar-based power pop and keyboards, while lyrically featuring his favored subjects of love, sex and death. “My goal was solid three-minute tunes with the biggest hooks I could come up with.” As Springfield explains, “the album is called ‘Automatic’ because the songs just kind of came out on their own.”

I can’t wait to hear what these songs are about!

A Rick Springfield time capsule

My copy of the “Springfield” CD came in the mail yesterday. I read the liner notes right away, but since I wasn’t sure where our CD player is, I ended up listening to it in my car today. Fortunately today’s the one day a week I drive to the office so I got to listen to the whole thing more than once.

First impression on first listen:

  1. It rocks! It really showcases RS’s incredible guitar playing.
  2. On first listen, my favorites are “Beethoven Street” and “Eleanor Rigby.” (It’s bizarre to think that this was recorded only eight years after the original Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” was released.) “Streakin’ Across the U.S.A.” cracked me up – I thought it was a fun song and if I had to choose one that I could imagine hearing on a 70s hit radio station today if the album was actually released in 1974, it’s “American Girls.”
  3. It was great to have such extensive liner notes. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone so I won’t give any details, but it included some photos from that time (caveman outfit, anyone?) and details about each song.
  4. Songs that didn’t age well: “Trash” (‘Trash, I’ve been thinking a lot about you, trash” “I don’t care if you’re built like a car” “And it really is a plain shame, but you’re trash, yeah, I know.”) and “Electra” (“Electra, Electra, I thought that I was your number one, Electra, Electra, Watcha gonna do with that machine gun?” followed by the drums sounding like a machine gun.) Actually my first response was feeling very disturbed by that, but I realize that reaction was more to the recent shootings and remembered that it was written 50 years ago by a 25-year-old guy and realized that it probably seemed really clever at the time. (The song sounded cooler in the live version, but hearing a machine gun at a live concert would not be cool these days.)
  5. It was fun to hear the live versions of the songs – the band sounded great and it was also cool to hear RS’s Australian accent when he spoke between songs (since that was before the acting classes where he learned to speak without his accent).
  6. The whole CD feels like a time capsule – hearing RS songs I’ve never heard before, seeing pics I’ve never seen before and hearing stories behind the songs and learning details about that time in his life. Even the whole idea of it – songs never being released because the record label decided not to release it – is an example of how it used to be. Now artists can release their own songs whenever they want to and don’t need to depend on a record label to release music. Heck, even I have two of my songs on Spotify (though, with about 100,000 songs being uploaded on Spotify each day, it’s difficult to get your songs noticed.)

Here’s a paragraph about the album from RS’s autobiography “Late, Late at Night”:

My record dies an orphan, landing with a bruised thud on the Hollywood sidewalk after a year and a half of loving care from me. If I didn’t know it already, I learn it now: this game is not for wusses. The album, tentatively titled Springfield – Rocks Off! (yikes) is put in a warehouse somewhere, along with the crated Ark of the Covenant, never to be seen or heard again.”

Rick Springfield, “Late, Late at Night”

Never to be seen or heard again, that is, until 2023.

In other news…

RS announced the “I Want My 80s Tour,” which is Aug. 4-Sept. 17 and will include Tommy Tutone and select dates with The Hooters and Paul Young. There’s no stop in Arizona this time around so it looks like I’ll be missing this one.

Totally random piece of information: On the Rick Springfield and Us fan-based website, I just noticed that today in Rick Springfield history, RS appeared on Arizona Midday and signed his novel “Magnificent Vibration” at a Tempe bookstore in 2014. Unfortunately I didn’t see either at that time so didn’t know about the book signing beforehand so I didn’t go. However, there was an interview with RS about his book on PBS the following month, which I did see which reignited my RS crush after losing touch of his career for over 15 years and inspired this blog nearly nine years ago.

(In the Arizona Midday video, there’s a “General Hospital” clip of Noah Drake and Bobbie Spencer, aka RS and Jacklyn Zeman. I was so sad to hear that she died this week. She seemed like such a nice person. Condolences to all her loved ones.)

Also, in a video clip from a recent concert that was posted on Facebook, we learned that the new album he’s been working on will be called “Automatic” and will have 20 new songs!!!!! Whoo-hoo, can’t wait for this NEW new album to come out!

Powerful song, video dedicated to Ukraine

In case you missed it, Rick Springfield posted a new song this week that included heartbreaking images from Ukraine.

Watch it here.

Text from the post:

I wrote this song about a couple in trouble but it fit my feelings about the war in Ukraine. More must be done. I send it out with prayers for peace. ♥️🇺🇦

The post didn’t mention the name of the song, though it seems like it may be “Make Your Move.” Mixed in with the Ukraine images is video of RS playing chess (to go along with the lyrics), singing in front of a graffitied wall and playing a chalk-drawn keyboard. The video includes the text “play” and the video counter marking the time passing. The presentation of the video makes it seem like it’s historical war footage. Sadly, the scenes are not from years ago, it’s happening right now. Truly heartbreaking.

Update on March 25: The video is now on YouTube:

A song from the new album: ‘Godforsaken World’

Posted this morning on the Ambition Music Group Facebook page:

A video for one of the songs on “Jack Chrome ad the Darkness Waltz,” from The Morris Springfield Project. (Rick Springfield and Russell Morris): ‘Godforsaken World.’

Here’s what it says about the song on the Facebook post:

Warning: You may need a shot of “Rocket Science”* afterward to go about your day.

“The first song I wrote for the album and I poured all my darkness into it. It talks a bit about the plague we’ve been through. I look at all that’s going on in the world and I wonder, “Where’s God?” I see where evil is, but where’s God?” Rick

Other videos released so far:

Carmelita’s Dance

The Darkness Waltz

The album is scheduled to come out tomorrow (Oct. 15), but I’m not clear how to get it in the U.S. Does anyone know?

* ‘Rocket Science’ is considered to be Rick Springfield’s happiest album.

First glimpses at ‘Jack Chrome’

Russell Morris, who recorded “Jack Chrome and the Darkness Waltz” with Rick Springfield, has been posting clips from the new album on his Facebook page, which I just discovered this morning so I though I’d post them here. Not all the posts have the corresponding video with it, but the track listing is posted here.

A sneak peek of the album (coming out Oct. 15)

“I Am Jack Chrome”: Jack Chrome is the narrator of the album

Heart of God (Corazon de Dios)” – The character of Jack Chrome is looking for God. (RS says it could be somewhat autobiographical as he is also searching.)

Death Drives a Cadillac” – A song about our mortality

Carmelita’s Dance” – A song about Carmelita, a conduit who brings the spiritual world to the real world, brings the loved ones back to their family.

We Are the Dead

Tonight We’ll Be Kings

La Calavera Catrina

Lone Rider

Dancing Bones

Godforsaken World

50mg of Hope

The Darkness Waltz

Note: Russell Morris’ FB page also has pics of dogs and koala bears. : )

Rick Springfield music 24/7

Rick Springfield fans can now listen to music from his decades-long career anytime they want!

The Rick and the NEWSflash fan group has created a free new commercial-free radio station that always plays his music, a wonderful treat for both his longtime and new fans.

Check it out here. The group is also on Facebook and Twitter.

People who only know him for “Jessie’s Girl” will be surprised to learn how much music he’s made since the 1960s. Even after being immersed in his music for awhile now, there are still several songs and different versions of songs that I haven’t heard yet. The songs include songs from his many studio albums, acoustic versions, live versions from concerts and songs from his different bands (Zoot, The Red Locusts, Sahara Snow). Earlier today was a performance with RS and Richard Marx from one of the fan cruises. At this very moment, he is singing “Painted Girl,” the very first song he remembers writing at age 15, which he performed at an acoustic Stripped Down tour.

This is for diehard RS fans for sure, but also for those who are fans that are only familiar with his hits because there are SO MANY GREAT SONGS that you’ll want to hear.

And if you’re not a fan of Rick Springfield, then you don’t have to listen and why are you even reading this blog? (But since you’re here, you may as well check out his songs and you may become a fan.)

By the way, those who listened to his recent Working Class DJ show on SIRIUSXm with the theme of “Hopeless Romantics” (which was actually a set of cynical love songs that included “Love Stinks,” “Tainted Love” and “King of Pain) would have heard him mention a photo session where he was wearing a pink shirt and a leather jacket holding a black guitar. This is the one I think he was talking about (which I of course had on my bedroom wall during my teenage years…)

Another one from this session (that was also on my wall):

Just for fun, here’s a really bad pic of the actual wall from my teenage bedroom (with those two posters):

Thank you to RS for all the decades of great music and to the Rick and the NEWSflash fan group for sharing all this music!

A Stripped Down virtual concert

Due to the positive response of the previous virtual concert, I thought I’d do one for the Stripped Down acoustic show, too. I think everyone can use more joy in their life, right?

This set list is from the April 4, 2019 concert in Albany, Georgia and the videos are from whatever Stripped Down videos I could find on YouTube for those songs. Thanks once again to all those who posted these videos! (The featured pic at the top is from the one Stripped Down I got to attend, in Tucson back in 2015: “What an amazing show (and another brief meeting).”)

Enjoy the show!

Bonus videos!

There are so many great videos from his Stripped Down shows, that I just wanted to share a few more, although they weren’t in this particular setlist.

Time for a virtual concert

Since it’s uncertain when it will be safe for concert tours to continue – and because of all the Rick Springfield music that was supposed to be happening this weekend in Cancun as part of the postponed fan trip – I thought I’d put together a little concert here for anyone who might need one.

This is based on a set list from a concert on Feb. 15 2019, courtesy of the Rick Springfield & Us fan site, although the videos of the songs are from whatever recent footage I could find from YouTube. (Thank you to all who posted the videos! Some of you had such awesome seats, which makes it extra fun to watch! )

OK, although I loved watching these, it also made me a little sad, realizing that these concerts are indefinitely on hold and some elements, like RS walking through the audience during “Human Touch” or passing the microphone through the crowd during “Don’t Talk to Strangers,” may be a thing of the past. But hopefully this hiatus is a brief one and RS and the band (and all other musicians) will be able to safely continue touring soon and share their music with fans in person.

‘The Wall Will Fall,’ ‘World on Fire’ and ‘Comic Book Heroes’

Although Rick Springfield fans are no longer getting their RS fixes in the pre-pandemic way (aka lots of concerts and videos posted by fans who attend those concerts), RS is providing plenty of entertainment in other ways.

In addition to the “No Human Touch” parody mentioned in the last post, there’s also the new “Glove Somebody” featuring a mix of old and current band members and two dogs.

There has also been seven versions of the instructional videos on how to play “Jessie’s Girl” in 60 seconds but despite his best efforts, we still don’t know. (So far his efforts have been sidelined by an “earthquake,” a “fire” and “technical difficulties.”)

The songwriting with a partner mini-series with Vance DeGeneres is having a bit more success though, as the song is really coming along nicely. Plus the videos are hilarious. The nice part is about being at home all the time is that I can stop everything to watch them as soon as I notice that they’re posted and they always make me laugh.

The videos have featured several guests and according to a new article on the Rock Cellar magazine website, the plan is to eventually release the song, currently called “The Wall Will Fall,” and donate any funds raised to a COVID-19 charity.

Can we spend a few minutes unpacking that new article? There’s so much good stuff in there!

  • The final edit of “World on Fire,” the sequel to “Magnificent Vibration,” is in progress and it’s “about a plague and how the Earth brings it to the people to try and save herself.” (He’s been working on it for three years and it’s going through its final edit when there’s an actual global plague. Pretty weird, especially when there are stories about how Los Angeles now has blue skies because there’s less pollution now that there’s not so much traffic and Venice canals are the cleanest they ever were, etc., which probably makes the Earth happy.)
  • More details on the HG Wells cutout from the Beatles Sgt. Pepper cover. (Which answers my question from a past blog post.)
  • He’s been working on acoustic guitar versions of “Comic Book Heroes” songs. He’s played a few on his fan club site, but I didn’t realize he was planning on playing all of them and will eventually do something more with them. Yay! “Comic Book Heroes” is my favorite of his older albums and I can’t wait to hear “Born Out of Time.” (My favorite on the album is “Believe in Me” and “Born Out of Time” is my second favorite and I remember my 12-year-old self feeling that way about RS because of our 20-year age difference. 😁)
  • The fact that he’s been playing a lot more piano these days. (For some pre-quarantine videos of this, see this post, “Sing us a song, piano man.”) Right after he mentions in the article that he’s been playing the piano a lot more these days, he mentions that his next album “is going to be quite different from the others.” Hmmm… He’s done rock, country-twinged, blues and symphony orchestra albums, will the next one be piano ballads?
  • On Saturday, April 25, he will perform in #AllTogetherNowLA, an online concert by Rock Cellar Productions, in association with @get2gethernow. The concert will be a relief effort to benefit L.A. residents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. (Visit alltogethernowla.org for details.)

(He also performed last weekend at the Human to Human event.)

He sure knows how to brighten someone’s day!
