Location: Sinclair Spirits, Journey to the Surface Ride

As we ring in the New Year, exactly two years ago, we said goodbye to a great singer: Patti Page passed away in Encinitas, California on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2013.

Just a few weeks before, she was made aware that she would receive the Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement. It was accepted on her behalf by her sister, Peggy Layton.

At the 55th Annual Grammy Awards, Kelly Clarkson paid tribute with a rendition of one of Page’s biggest hits, “Tennessee Waltz”.

Page was regarded as the top female vocal singer of the 50s with more than a dozen records hitting gold status, including “With My Eyes Wide Open I’m Dreaming”, “Old Cape Cod”, and “Allegheny Moon”

But “Doggie in the Window” would remain one of Page’s most popular hits. Her original 1953 recording, with the pioneering use of overdubbing her own voice, incidentally was not the one used in Fort Frolic when greeted with a row of plaster-covered splicers. As it says on the back cover of this album, Page re-recorded some of her hits when she transitioned from Mercury to the Columbia label.

Invariably, people felt a jarring transition from the cheery notes of the song to the horrors behind the store windows, leading it to become one of the most memorable songs from the soundtrack. Yet, it is an eerie coincidence how Page would be linked further to the events of Rapture.

This is dedicated in honor of that honey-toned voice.

Listen to her original 1953 hit record here.
