Friday, May 19, 2023 9pm ET: Feature LP: Katy Perry – Teenage Dream (2010)

Teenage Dream is the third studio album by American singer Katy Perry. It was released on August 24, 2010, through Capitol Records. Primarily a pop record, Teenage Dream also contains elements of disco, electronic, rock, funk, house, Hi-NRG, and hip hop, that revolve around young love, partying, self-empowerment, and personal growth. Perry co-wrote the album, and worked with a number of producers such as Dr. Luke, Max Martin, Benny Blanco, Stargate and Greg Wells.

With “California Gurls”, “Teenage Dream”, “Firework”, “E.T.”, and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”, Teenage Dream is the second album in history to have five number-one singles (after Michael Jackson’s 1987 album Bad) to top the US Billboard Hot 100, and the first by a woman to achieve this milestone. Its sixth single, “The One That Got Away”, peaked at number three on that chart. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 192,000 copies in its first week. The album was later certified nine times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for combined album sales, track sales, on-demand audio and video streams equivalent of nine million album-sale units. The album has gone onto sell 3.1 million copies in the United States, and charted within the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 year-end chart three years in a row. The album also sold 1.3 million copies in the United Kingdom, where it was certified five times platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

Upon its release, Teenage Dream received mixed reviews from music critics, who complimented its themes but were divided over its production and Perry’s vocals. However, retrospective reviews have praised the album, ranking it on multiple decade-end best albums lists. Billboard named Teenage Dream “one of the defining LPs from a new golden age in mega-pop” and The A.V. Club called the album “pop perfection”. The album and its singles earned Perry seven Grammy Award nominations including Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Record of the Year.

It also won International Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2011. All six of the aforementioned singles, in addition to two from its 2012 reissue Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, have sold over two million digital downloads each in the US, setting a record in the digital era for the most multi-Platinum singles from one album, breaking the previous record of Fergie’s debut album The Dutchess (2006), which had five multi-Platinum songs. To promote the album, Perry embarked on the California Dreams Tour from 2011 to 2012. By July 2013, Teenage Dream had sold 6 million copies worldwide.

Tuesday 10/25/22 12pm ET: Feature Artist: Katy Perry

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (born October 25, 1984), known professionally as Katy Perry, is an American singer, songwriter, and television personality. She is recognized for her influence on 2010s pop music. Pursuing a career in gospel music at 16, Perry released her debut album, Katy Hudson, under Red Hill Records in 2001, which was commercially unsuccessful. She moved to Los Angeles at 17 to venture into secular music, and later adopted the stage name “Katy Perry” from her mother’s maiden name. She recorded an album, Fingerprints, while signed to Columbia Records, but was dropped and the album went unreleased.

In April 2007, Perry signed to Capitol Records. She rose to fame with One of the Boys (2008), a pop rock record containing her debut single “I Kissed a Girl” and follow-up single “Hot n Cold”, which reached number one and three on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 respectively. The disco-influenced pop album Teenage Dream (2010) spawned five U.S. number one singles—”California Gurls”, “Teenage Dream”, “Firework”, “E.T.”, and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”—becoming the first and only album by a solo female singer to do so. A reissue of the album titled Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection (2012) subsequently produced the U.S. number one single “Part of Me”. Her dance-inspired fourth album Prism (2013) had themes of empowerment and two U.S. number one singles “Roar” and “Dark Horse”. Both their respective music videos made Perry the first artist to have multiple videos reach one billion views on Vevo. The electropop album Witness (2017) featured themes of feminism and a political subtext, while Smile (2020) was influenced by her recent motherhood. Afterwards, she embarked on her sold-out Las Vegas concert residency titled Play (2021–present), receiving critical acclaim and commercial success.

Perry is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold over 143 million records worldwide. All of her studio albums released under Capitol have individually surpassed one billion streams on Spotify, totalling six billion streams. She has nine U.S. number one singles, three U.S. number one albums and has received various accolades, including four Guinness World Records, five Billboard Music Awards, five American Music Awards, a Brit Award, and a Juno Award. Perry has been included in the annual Forbes lists of highest-earning women in music from 2011 to 2019. Her acclaimed Super Bowl halftime show performance is the most watched in history. Outside of music, she released an autobiographical documentary titled Katy Perry: Part of Me in 2012, voiced Smurfette in The Smurfs film series, and launched her own shoe line Katy Perry Collections in 2017. Perry began serving as a judge on American Idol during its sixteenth season in 2018. She is also the most-followed woman and the third most-followed person on Twitter, with over 100 million followers.

After Red Hill ceased operations, she moved to Los Angeles the following year to venture into secular music, adopting the stage name “Katy Perry” from her mother’s maiden name. Perry subsequently began working with producers Glen Ballard, Dr. Luke, and Max Martin on an album that remains unreleased. After being dropped by The Island Def Jam Music Group and Columbia Records, she signed a recording contract with Capitol Records in April 2007.

Thursday 9/10/2020 11pm ET: Feature LP 2020: Katy Perry – Smile (2020)

Smile is the sixth studio album by American singer Katy Perry. It was released on August 28, 2020, by Capitol Records, three years after its predecessor Witness (2017). Perry worked with a multitude of producers on the album, including Josh Abraham, Carolina Liar, The Daylights, G Koop, Andrew Goldstein, Oligee, Oscar Görres, Oscar Holter, Ilya, Ian Kirkpatrick, The Monsters & Strangerz, Charlie Puth, Stargate and Zedd. She described Smile as her “journey towards the light, with stories of resilience, hope, and love”. Musically a pop album, Smile is characterized by its themes of self-help and empowerment.

Two singles preceded the album: “Daisies”, the lead single, was released on May 15, 2020, and peaked at number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100; its follow-up, “Smile”, followed on July 10, 2020. Smile also includes Perry’s 2019 standalone singles “Never Really Over” and “Harleys in Hawaii” in its track list. Upon release, Smile received mixed reviews from music critics, who were favorable towards Perry’s maturing image, but criticized the lyrics and production. The album charted in the top-five in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Scotland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, top-ten in Austria, Ireland, and Italy, and the top-20 in Finland, France, Germany, and the Netherlands.
