^^I hear a lot of people saying that and I think they're missing what the "skipping" around in Jamaica symbolizes. Not to sound naive, but what does it symbolize? I didn't think much of it haha I took it as her characters background story, she's your typical girl next door. She's carefree loving life etc etc. Basically to prove the point that it can happen to anyone even someone like her. Maybe I put too much thought in it lol

RIHANNA CALLS INTO ‘106 & PARK’ TO ADDRESS ‘MAN DOWN’ CONTROVERSYWith the backlash she’s facing from the Parents Television Council, Rihanna called in to BET’s “106 & Park” to further address the controversy surrounding her “Man Down” video. Taking a break from tour rehearsals in Baltimore, RiRi explained the video’s concept and why she chose to include a murder scene. “I don’t like to just make videos. I love to make an experience and this is art with a message,” she told hosts Terrence and Rocsi. “Obviously [the character is] not a cold-blooded killer. It has to be something so offensive and we decided to hone in on a very serious matter that people are afraid to address.” Her intention was to send a strong message for women who have been victimized. “Rape is happening all over the world and right in our own home and we continue to cover it up and pretend it doesn’t happen,” she explained. “I personally don’t condone violence or murder. I’ve been abused in the past and you don’t see me running around killing people in my spare time. I just want girls to be careful.” www.rap-up.com/2011/06/02/rihanna-calls-into-106-park-to-address-man-down-controversy

Especially with her playing around with the guys (di bad bwoy dem) in the neighborhood. I know a lot of Jamaicans have a problem with her doing this there because of the message it sends but I don't because the truth of the matter is this happens very frequently there. A lot of the parties in the country are very sexualized (passa passa, etc) and sometimes when girls do dance up with a guy like that, they take it as an invitation to go further. Girls are almost always groped or even stripped at those parties. They'll flash the cameras and guys think it's okay for them to touch or feel.

I'm starting to really like this song. When I first got the album, I hated it. I love the Caribbean feel and Rihanna's accent in the song. <3

The fact there's a controversy around the video bothers me. There's the single scene where she shoots the guy in the beginning and the perceived rape near the end but otherwise it's a tame video. Yet people are up in arms over it. I guarantee if it were by a male singer no one would bat an eye.

A male shooting a female as retaliation for rape would not only be bizarre, but I'm sure male on female violence in and of itself would go over even worse. ;)

The controversy is coming from the interpretation that it condones murder as retaliation for rape, not just that the video is violent. I don't think Rihanna helped her case by initially saying that the video sends a strong message to women. The message, according to her after the fact, is that girls need to be careful because flirting can turn into rape. However, a lot of people interpreted her "message" as condoning murder as retaliation for rape.

The controversy is coming from the interpretation that it condones murder as retaliation for rape whoever gets that interpretation probably was just judging it at face level. the lyrics of it make it clear that the action was wrong & is sung in regret. the video just shows the reality of what goes on in the minds on rape victims & it could be as easily interpreted as what not to do b/c of how prevalent the regretful lyrics are which shows that it wasnt the right thing to do. i just think someone would have to have a very basic level of social understanding to blame Rihanna for a video like this. it's parents' job to raise their children to know right from wrong so when they see the type of sexual or violent media that is everywhere-not just from Rihanna, they know how to interpret it. after watching the video, i dont think its okay to just kill someone, do you?

At the end of the day it just comes down to people's beliefs. Regardless of this music video, some people do believe an eye for an eye i.e. you hurt me, I hurt you while others don't.
If a music video has the power the change a person's belief then something clearly is loose on that person's end.

The only negative thing about the video i have to say is that it didn't have a parental discrection disclaimer/label at the beginning of the video. Other than that i honesty don't see what all the hoopla is about.

This is wild. What was the last video to cause a stir? Was it S&M?

This is wild. What was the last video to cause a stir? Was it S&M? S&M or "Judas". Those were pretty minor to what this is getting though, this has been all over the news the past 2 days. CNN have run like 5 or so different articles on it. The tide seems to be changing a bit though, like the link Fancy! posted, a lot of people are coming out in defense of it now.

A male shooting a female as retaliation for rape would not only be bizarre, but I'm sure male on female violence in and of itself would go over even worse. ;) No, I mean if the storyline were the same but it was just a different song by a male singer or rapper. Basically, a video by a male act in which a woman shoots a man, over a perceived rape or otherwise, wouldn't get the attention this video is getting.

Wow! The video is really good, I love the concept and the scenery is beautiful (<3 Jamaica). This is getting a ton of controversy but all I'll say is that any parent who sits their child in front of a TV and says "learn" should be revoked of their parenting rights immediately.

Good. I guess top 15 on either format would be acceptable.

RIHANNA - Man Down: 19.363 (+ 1.011) :o
This will probably be higher than CKB on the Hot 100 this week.
