Notocactus scopa is commonly known as the "Silver Ball" or "Golden Ball" cactus due to its distinctive appearance. Notocactus scopa is native to Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil.
This cactus typically has a solitary globular or cylindrical stem that can reach a height of up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) and a diameter of about 15 centimeters (6 inches). The stem is covered in numerous tubercles or ribs, which are usually arranged in spirals. These tubercles have woolly areoles from which yellow or golden spines emerge. The spines are typically radial, short, and dense, giving the cactus a fuzzy appearance.
One notable feature of Notocactus scopa is its ability to produce beautiful flowers. The flowers are relatively large, measuring around 3 to 4 centimeters (1.2 to 1.6 inches) in diameter. They are typically yellow or golden in color, although other color variations can occur. The flowering period usually takes place in spring or summer, and the flowers can last for several days.
In terms of care, Notocactus scopa is generally considered a relatively easy-to-grow cactus. It prefers bright light conditions and can tolerate direct sunlight, but it also appreciates some shade during the hottest part of the day. The cactus requires well-draining soil, as overwatering can lead to root rot. It is recommended to water the plant sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. During the winter months, the cactus benefits from a period of dormancy, during which it should be kept in a cool and dry environment.
With proper care, this cactus can thrive and add a touch of beauty to any cactus collection or garden.
