Vicar: It's about this letter you sent me regarding my insurance claim.
Devious: Oh, yeah, well, you see, it's just that we're not, as yet, totally satisfied with the grounds of your claim.
Vicar: But it says something about filling my mouth in with cement.
Devious: Oh well, that's just insurance jargon, you know.

Just over a foot. Not with me. At a fish market. I wouldn go that close if I had one. Those teeth dont look exactly inviting.

Could I have an e-mail with the picture - I'd like to add it to the Cat-eLog.

Are these "find 7 differences" pics ? :)

Nice.

Stackdeck, I can't be certain but my attu (9") and leerii (15") teeth look like that. I don't have close-ups, just going on memory. What do you mean?

Mats, how are going to make sure of the ID? The pics above can't be enough, can they?

I'm not sure. I trust(ed) Shovelnose on the ID... But checking it, I suspect that Shovelnose took the picture in India and the fish was caught in India - which means that it can't be W. leeri, as that has a distribution in Malaysia and Greater Sunda Islands.

In fact, W. attu is the only species of Wallago that has a distribution in India.

The picture was taken in a fish market in Calcutta. Not Wallago leeri for sure. Its not from India. W.attu is common all over India.

I dont think anyone would wanna farm these. I have heard stories on how they jump quite a few feet in the air to escape the fishermen nets and even attack when hooked.

A 3 foot specimen collected from a lake near my home.

My friend who took this pic was there when this specimen was hauled in. Apparently put up quite a fight and snapped at everything.

All the pics here definately attu , their head looks different from all other Wallago. As for the teeth , maybe I havent had a good look in the mouth. Really love these cats , getting less common around here now and I was lucky to get a piece from a local farm that specialises in Thai fish. Any idea where most leeri in the trade are caught from? I havent seen one for sale in a long long time.

are attus compatible with each other in a large enough tank (when small) and a pond (when adults)?

BTW, what's/who's RBP?

The farm had a dozen foot longers in a 6ft tub for 2 months with no probs yet. Even seen some people keep them with gar and other large fish. From my personal observations , attu is more docile than leeri. In fact im currently keeping my foot plus specimen with a small Hypostomus.
