Belfast Child (The Simple Minds)

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor the simple minds 1983The Simple Minds: the band has 5 members: Jim Kerr, Charlie Burchill, Ged Grimes, Mel Gaynor and Andy Gillespie. The best time that they preformed was in the 80’s. They wrote in de genre’s Rock, new wave and poprock. The last album they brought out was in 2014 with the name “big Music”.

Belfast child:The song came out on 6 february 1989. Afbeeldingsresultaat voor the simple minds don't you forget about meThe song is about the bombing in Belfast, they discribe how wrong and terible the bombing was. Children crying , loved ones that died etc. They made the video clip black and with so you can easier see how terible it was. that was their stament to let everyone see what was wrong in that period.

I don’t really like this songs it’s  sad. But the songtekst is good written and clear.

I think this song is still popular because it is very impressive, the war/ conflict there was a big thing in the time the song was made. So it will always be emotional for the people that live there.

lyrics:

“Belfast Child”

When my love said to me,
Meet me down by the gallow tree.
For it’s sad news I bring,
About this old town and all that it’s offering.
Some say troubles abound,
Some day soon they’re gonna pull the old town down.
One day we’ll return here,
When the Belfast Child sings again

Brothers, sisters, where are you now?
As I look for you right through the crowd.
All my life here I’ve spent,
With my faith in God the Church and the Government.
But there’s sadness abound,
Some day soon they’re gonna pull the old town down.

One day we’ll return here,
When the Belfast Child sings again,
When the Belfast Child sings again

So come back Billy, won’t you come on home?
Come back Mary, you’ve been away so long.
The streets are empty, and your mother’s gone.
The girls are crying, it’s been oh so long.
And your father’s calling, come on home.
Won’t you come on home, won’t you come on home?

Come back people, you’ve been gone a while,
And the war is raging, through the Emerald Isle.
That’s flesh and blood man, that’s flesh and blood,
All the girls are crying but all’s not lost.

The streets are empty, the streets are cold.
Won’t you come on home, won’t you come on home?

The streets are empty,
Life goes on.

One day we’ll return here,
When the Belfast Child sings again,
When the Belfast Child sings again
