This series continues to build an historic collection of the development of British chart music. 1956 was the year when the chart was expanded to 30 places and means that our collection is presented as two separate 4 CD sets. 1956 was the year that Rock and Roll really began to make its presence felt and the track listing demonstrates the eclectic nature of the music industry at the time, Where else would you find the old guard of established stars such as Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Edmund Hockeridge rubbing shoulders with the new upstarts who were to go on and dominate the charts such as Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, Little Richard and Carl Perkins. Added to this there are a number of typically British entries, most notably the Goons who were establishing themselves as one of the most loved and important icons of British entertainment. 1953 was the year that Elvis Presley recorded for the first time but it would be another two years before he graced an American chart. The biggest hits of 1953 were still in the hands of balladeers and Orchestra leaders. Frankie Laine's quasi-religious "I Believe" was the years biggest hit despite peaking at No2. In the UK it topped the charts for 18 weeks, a record that still remains unbeaten over 50 years later. The year began with the January 1st death of Country superstar Hank Williams whose songs were covered by many pop stars and 1953 was no exception with Joni James version of his song, "Your Cheating Heart", scaling the charts. Country crossover was also present in the years first No 1, Perry Como's, "Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes". The ever increasing power of Television is evident in the No 1 success of the theme from "Dragnet" and more surprisingly Stan Freberg's satire on the TV show, "St George & The Dragonet". America in 1952 was to say the least a very significant year. Television was getting a foothold and the most significant events in music was the first reported 'Rock 'n' Roll riot at Alan Freed's Moondog Celebration Ball in Cleveland, Ohio, the first broadcast of 'American Bandstand' (without Dick Clark) and on March 27th the opening of Sun Studios in Memphis Tennessee. These last three occurrences had a profound impact on most of the artists featured on this CD; America's Greatest Hits of 1952. All of these titles reached the top 3 on the Billboard charts for the year. Pee Wee King's opening track was surely one of the first Country titles to cross over to the pop charts. Mind you the country artists and writers were supplying a lot of crossover hits in this period and Jo Stafford's cover of Hank Williams; "Jambalaya" was no exception. Al Martino's big ballad "Here In My Heart" also has the distinction of being the very first No 1 on the very first British Hit Parade in 1952. This album is very much a barometer of the popular sounds of the day with, perhaps, the exception of Johnny Standley's "It's In the Book", a big favourite on BBC Radio at the time but never a UK hit. It's a parody of fundamentalist preachers and is presented here in its full-length version, which featured a sing along gospel pastiche.
