Here (in your arms) hellogoodbye music video analysis

Here (in your arms) is to this day the most successful hit from the pop band Hellogoodbye. The music video is set in a typical American summer camp named ‘Holadios’ (‘’Hellogoodbye’’ in Spanish). While the band members are all staying there, Forrest (the lead singer) becomes fixated on a girl who is also staying at the camp. The music video is a tribute the movie ‘Wet Hot American Summer’, it contains several references to the film such as when Forrest (the lead singer) put on the headband and sunglasses, this is similar to the change that ‘Coop’ from the movie undergoes to win the affection of a girl. The Chewing gum that a lot of the camp mates in the music video appear to have is another major reference, where campers in the film are seen chewing gum before they kiss.

The first shot of the video is a panning shot following two girl members of the camp. They are dressed in matching yellow shirts and green shorts, the same holiday camp uniforms used in ‘Wet Hot American Summer’. The shot also shows the sign for the camp, you can vaguely see in smaller writing under the name of the camp the words ‘Class of ‘91’, setting the music video to have a retro early 90’s vibe.

The video goes on to use montage editing of various clips showing members of the summer camp engaging in difference activities. Cross cutting is also used to show clips of the lead singer singing the lyrics to the song. As he sings he throws his arms around and dances despite having no rhythm, making him seem quite humorous while also portraying him as uncool. Juxtaposition is also used showing the camp mates all socialising and having fun with each other to Forrest being alone in a field, emphasising the fact that he is an ‘outcast’ and ‘loner’.

The lead singer is wearing large glasses and braces, making him appear as the stereotypical nerd. He is also wearing a pink shirt and yellow shorts, different to everyone else in the music video who is dressed in the same yellow shirt and green shorts. This portrays the idea that the character is isolated from the others as well as grabbing the viewer’s attention to him by putting emphasis on him being the main character.

A slow motion close up shot of the girl is used; the wind is blowing her hair making her appear as the male fantasy. The other girls in the music video appear to have minimal to no makeup where this girl is wearing blue eye shadow, she is also wearing jewellery around her neck, this portrays her as girly and feminine, perhaps this could also be connoting her as Hollywood’s stereotypical popular girl and therefore why she is so intimidating for Forrest to approach.

Although the music video is inspired by ‘Wet Hot American Summer’, it still remains to mainly demonstrate features of illustration by having the video link into the lyrics of the song. For example the lyrics say ‘’I fell in love, in love with you suddenly’’ and shows a shot of Forrest and the girl kissing, emphasising ideas of love and romance.

In the final shots of the music video, it cross cuts from shots showing Forrest now appearing to fit into the crowd with his new appearance and having got the girl he wanted, while also cross cutting to him and the band performing the song on stage.
