Our Chosen Song- Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked

08 Jul

Below are some images that we have taken of our plan for our final song choice, Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked by Cage the Elephant. In these images we show are early concepts, themes and ideas that we have for each specific part of the lyrics. We have highlighted key parts of quotes which we felt were important as we felt that it would be necessary to put emphasis on those particular lyrics through the music video. Our overall style for this music video is similar to that of a graphic novel/cartoon as we felt this would reflect upon the attitude of the song towards modern day society thus letting us explore the meaning behind the lyrics through the music video.

Lyric analysis 1- Final

Above shows the first part of our annotations. We have wondered about making a small introduction to the music videos as it seems fairly common in several music videos to help establish narrative. We also want to have a female acting as the first person and have them lip-syncing the words that are being sung due to the fact that she originally said them. As such, by having the femaleĀ lip-syncing the words, it aids the narrative of the music video.

Lyric analysis 2- Final

We have discussed having an shot in which we see money falling from a tree to subvert from the lyrics ‘Money don’t grow on trees’. This will help show again the views that this song shows about society. This effect would be in either a silhouette style or would follow the graphic novel style to keep the shot consistent with the rest of the music video while also making the music video look stylish and interesting to view.

Lyric analysis 3-Final

We felt that for the 2nd Chorus we may try using disjuncture to make the chorus different from the previous thus adding to the repeatability as well as making the overall video more varied and therefore more interesting to watch. We also considered some form of performance at this point to make sure that music stays at the heart of the music video as well as making the video more authentic. After this we felt there was a distinct change in the character as he is now saying/singing the chorus directly thus making it an important part of the narrative for the music video. Therefore from this we feel that it will be important to show this change through a narrative part of the music video.

Lyric analysis 4-Final

Above shows the summary and a short list of some of the ideas we have had about the music video as a whole. At the end we have considered showing the change in the artist by showing him stealing a car or something to that effect. We may also show all the previous characters in the music video in a still image to show how they have effected the artists judgement on society and how to act. Other ideas considered were some close-ups or shots of the performers and perhaps breaking the fourth wall. These ideas are not finalised but are just some of the ideas we have had so far.

Above is the picture of the entire document with annotations around each section detailing some of our basic ideas as of yet.

Overall, though we have not fully decided upon all our ideas, we have come to an understanding that we want our video to be in the style of a graphic novel/cartoon with possible parts of all three styles (Narrative, Performance, Disjuncture). Later on we will conduct further research into Alternative Rock and Cage the Elephant so that we can best suit our music video to the typical target audience of this type of music.
