While diving in the Saanich Inlet I was surprised to see a large fried egg jellyfish (Phacellophora camtschatica) suspended and not moving much at all. Apparently this jelly has the strategy of little movement and simply drifting in the current with its tentacles splayed outward like a fishing net waiting to catch prey. The fried egg jellyfish has a large translucent bell with scalloped edge, and it really looks like an egg just starting to cook in the frying pan. This jelly can grow large with its bell reaching two feet (60 cm) in diameter. The fried egg jellyfish is pelagic and has a range that includes Japan and Siberia, as well as Northern Alaska to Chili.
