WELCOME The Wizard of Oz is a story of imagination, fantasy, and friendship that has captivated our world for over a century. Like most of us, my most vivid memories of the story are based on the film version, with its thrilling technicolor world and its nightmarish depiction of foreboding and primal fear. L. Frank Baum, the author of the Oz series of books, was a dreamer—a sometime actor, salesman, farmer, and journalist who was raised on Grimm’s fairy tales, but hated the introduction of goblins and monsters. He wanted to create a child hero whose journey of self-discovery and maturity is abetted by three nonhuman characters with abundantly human impulses and desires: courage, intelligence, and compassion. The movie of The Wizard of Oz, and the stage musical on which it is based, is very much based in the vaudevillian sensibilities of the 1930’s. Vaudeville gave way to the early talking movies of the Depression, which were a balm for a society that was feeling anxious, wary, and in need of ways of coming together as a community. We’ve had a tough go of it over the past couple of years, and the world around us is currently edgy and uncertain. The Wizard of Oz reminds us of a place of magic and wonder, a place where friendship, collaboration, and community lead to a happy place. A place that, although based in a world of imagination, has a very simple message: a reminder of the most important place in our lives. It’s home. And you’re all here. Enjoy.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES By James MacDonald The Wizard of Oz Director

There’s always an exciting challenge when approaching the stage version of a beloved story as familiar as The Wizard of Oz. There is also always the rush of inspiration, and more than one joyful moment of “Eureka!” When I started working with the brilliant designers, Narda McCarroll and Stephanie Kong, on the concept for this production, we asked a couple of key questions. Why is it that the characters in Kansas have alter egos in Oz, but Kansas itself does not? And if Oz is Dorothy’s dream world populated by alternate versions of her family and friends, then how do the familiar objects of her home morph into the wonderful world of Oz? As vibrantly brought to life by the designers and our talented WCT team, Oz is an alternate world to Kansas—those of you with sharp eyes will see how we introduce elements of Oz in the first few scenes in Kansas, elements that trigger Dorothy’s imagination in the creation of her fantasy world. The new musical arrangements and choreography for the production are influenced by vaudeville, the great American songbook, 1930s movie musicals, and contemporary pop— all forms of popular entertainment that crossed class, income, age, and demographic boundaries. There’s a story for everyone in The Wizard of Oz, and it’s been a delight coming up with a new way to share it with you.

GOING EMERALD: A UNIQUE APPROACH TO PRODUCTION DESIGN By Narda McCarroll The Wizard of Oz Set Designer

I have no idea how young I was the first time I saw the iconic 1939 film version of The Wizard of Oz. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to travel to Oz or to sing and dance to those songs. It feels like it was always a part of me. Creating the world of Oz for this production has been a great thrill and an immense challenge. I usually begin my design process by trolling the interweb for images that inspire me. While looking for ideas on how to create the magical locations of Oz I came across a number of photos of art installations that created fantastical environments or sculptures using an abundance of common objects: mosaics made with pop cans, hanging columns built with recyclable plastic bottles, archways constructed with bicycles, and forests created with umbrellas. I shared these images with James. We brainstormed on ways we might use this technique and came up with an idea that grew into our design. What if when Dorothy travels through Oz she sees variations of Kansas and Home in every aspect of that world? Our Munchkinland repurposes comforting items Dorothy associates with her Aunt Em—pie plates, mixing bowls, pots, spoons, and spatulas are used to build a bright colorful otherworldly garden. The fields where we find our Scarecrow grow crops that resemble rakes, shovels, and hoes. The apple trees that grow where the Tinman first appears have trunks and branches made of tin cans and foliage created with rope. You get the idea. One of challenges of making this idea into a reality was the vast quantity of items we’d need. We hoped this might be an opportunity to build a set with a greener footprint and to reach out to the Kamloops community for help. The amazing staff at WCT created the “Go Emerald” Recycling Drive to gather materials, and the people of Kamloops did not let us down. Thank you. I hope you enjoy the show.

ABOUT THE CREATORS LYMAN FRANK BAUM (1856–1919) was an American author of children’s books, best known for writing The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, published in 1900. One of the most successful novels in American literature, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz sold out instantly, became a cultural sensation, and sold over three million copies before entering the public domain in 1956. Baum wrote thirteen novel sequels, nine other fantasy novels, and a host of other works, including 83 short stories, over 200 poems, and 55 novels. HAROLD ARLEN (1905–1986) wrote some of the greatest hits from the 30s and 40s, including the entire score to the classic movie The Wizard of Oz. Songs such as “Over the Rainbow,” “Get Happy,” “Stormy Weather,” “It’s Only a Paper Moon,” “I’ve Got the World on a String” and “Last Night When We Were Young” are just some of the standards that live on today and have distinguished Harold Arlen as one of the Great American Composers of the 20th Century. E. Y. HARBURG (1896–1981), the son of poor Russian-Jewish immigrants, is one of America’s greatest lyricists for stage and screen. Also, a book writer (usually with Fred Saidy), director, and poet, Harburg wrote lyrics for more than 550 songs, including “It’s Only A Paper Moon” (with Harold Arlen), “April in Paris” (with Vernon Duke), and “Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?” (with Jay Gorney). His landmark musicals were Bloomer Girl (with Arlen) and Finian’s Rainbow. Yip was the final editor and wrote lyrics and continuity for the universally loved film The Wizard of Oz. HERBERT STOTHART (1885–1949) was nominated for nine Oscars and won for Best Original Score for his work on the 1939 film of The Wizard of Oz. As a young man, he studied music in Europe and at the University of Wisconsin, where he also taught. He worked as a musical director for Arthur Hammerstein and later began writing music for the producer’s nephew, Oscar Hammerstein II, including some for the operetta Rose Marie. In 1929, he was signed to a contract by Louis B. Mayer; he spent the last 20 years of his life at MGM studios working on films. PETER HOWARD (1927–2008) was an American musical theater arranger, conductor, and pianist. Howard served as either music director or dance music arranger for 38 Broadway shows, including Chicago, Fosse, Carnival, The Sound of Music, Hello, Dolly!, 1776, Annie, Baby, My One and Only, Barnum, The Tap Dance Kid, Swinging on a Star, and Crazy for You. His movie work includes Stepping Out, Zelig, Mame, Annie, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. LARRY WILCOX (1935–1993) orchestrated over 25 Broadway shows and tours, including The Yearling, The Three Musketeers, Singin’ in the Rain, and Aspects of Love. He arranged and conducted recordings for the Boston Pops, the Milwaukee Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Paul Simon, Tony Bennett, Shirley MacLaine, and Dionne Warwick. Mr. Wilcox also arranged nightclub acts for Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, and Ann-Margret, among others. JOHN KANE is an accomplished British actor and writer. An associate actor with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Kane played Puck in Peter Brook’s acclaimed production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, alongside Ben Kingsley, Alan Howard, and Frances de la Tour, before turning to comedy script writing. Kane wrote the RSC’s adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, the West End Cole Porter tribute A Swell Party and the words and music in 2005 for The Canterville Ghost at the Southwark Playhouse.

THE TRIVIA OF OZ: Answers 1.

This adaptation of The Wizard of Oz is based on the 1939 movie, so Dorothy has ruby slippers, but in the original book the slippers were Silver. In the movie version, the slippers were changed to a brighter colour to show off new Technicolor technology for making colors in film more vivid.

2.

Judy Garland’s daughter, Liza Minelli, became a legend of stage and screen in her own right and won her first Oscar for 1972’s Cabaret.

3. Based on a 1974 stage musical, The Wiz, featured an all-black cast and turned the Emerald City into a modern metropolis. 4. Drawing from later Oz books, including The Marvelous Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz, Return to Oz is creepy and odd and worth a watch. 5. Based on the book of the same name, Wicked tells the life story of Elphaba Thropp (Her last name isn’t mentioned in the musical). The name is based on L. Frank Baum’s initials, LFB. 6. No, it’s not Adele Dazeem. Wicked made Idina Menzel a huge star. She went on to voice the role of Elsa in the Frozen movies and, well, we all know how that has worked out for parents everywhere. 3055-WCT Sponsorship Ad-4.75x3.75.pdf
