WELCOME! Welcome to our favourite annual tradition—the WCT family holiday musical! We’re honoured to help build traditions in our community, and we know that it means so much to all of you that we bring you a family-oriented production for you to share with your loved ones at this time of year. It also means everything to us that you are here, year after fantastic year. At WCT, we bring together top-flight professional talent from across Canada, with a strong focus on B.C. and local artists. This commitment to excellence has made us one of Canada’s strongest and highest-regarded professional theatres. It’s thanks to the incredible people of Kamloops that we not only entertain over 35,000 people of all ages in our community every year, but also many more across Canada through our touring and co-productions. WCT began in 1974 as a youth theatre company, and our belief in supporting the creative development of young people continues to this day. We love involving young people in our productions—the joy they bring to our rehearsals, the enthusiasm they bring to their performances, and the pleasure of watching their wonderful work onstage. We know that these unforgettable experiences will be truly life-altering for them. We also know that seeing them onstage inspires the thousands of kids who will enjoy this production as audience members. It’s so important that young people are able to enjoy our productions, with their families or in our school matinee program. Seeing our shows at a young age engenders a lifelong appreciation for theatre and the arts, building the cultural supporters of the future. And they receive fantastic entertainment in an environment free of electronics or distractions, seeing a production that will tickle their funny bones while offering valuable lesson about inclusivity and acceptance. And honestly…there is truly nothing more joyful than watching a child fall off their seat with laughter at the theatre. None of what we do at WCT is possible without the generous support of our community—your ticket purchases, your individual donations, and your sponsorship is truly the lifeblood of our company. Thanks to your generosity, we are able to offer life-changing experiences to over 4,000 young people every year. At WCT, we take our responsibility as community-builders and community-leaders very seriously, especially when we’re having fun. We’re immensely grateful to be your choice this holiday season, and for the support you’ve offered us for 48 years. Your belief in WCT, and in the cultural organizations of Kamloops, builds a better city for all of us, and for that we can all be thankful.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES by James MacDonald

Part of the joy of a life spent working in the theatre is that I often get to express and indulge in childhood flights of imagination and fancy. When I was a boy, my friends and I played a game called “Town”, where we constructed a roomsized town of wooden blocks through which we’d zip around in Matchbox cars to our “jobs” and our “apartments”. That sense of play has never left me—and getting to direct shows such as Shrek The Musical, with their exuberant and irreverent joy, bring back that wonderful feeling of childlike joy and imagination. Fairy tales bridge childhood and adulthood. They can be viewed many different ways, either as childhood adventures, or socially-aware parables for adults. Shrek The Musical threads together a timely message of acceptance and inclusivity with irreverent humour and smashingly catchy music, producing a show that both enlightens and entertains kids of all ages. When Ross Nichol came to me with the idea of a set based in classic books, I loved it—as a kid I loved reading the old graphic Classic Comics and adventure stories, plucking those stories off of my own messy bookshelf or unearthing them at the dusty section of the library. Shrek gives these stories their own sly and modern twist. And of course, at the heart is a story of romance and friendship shared by unlikely heroines and heroes. That they are “imperfect”, and that they like to indulge in the silly joys of life more than the slickly superficial makes them all the more…human. We have a lot of fun putting these shows together, and even more fun when we’re able to share them with you, our community. We hope it makes you feel a little freer to let your freak flag fly in this big, bright, beautiful world. Enjoy!
