foreword from Mike van Eaton I have a great love of music. Being from the deep south, I also have a great love for New Orleans and the Gulf South. So, when I was approached about curating this auction, it was a no-brainer for me. Two of my great loves combined for a great cause. I want to give a very special thank you to The Edge, Bob Ezrin, Caroline Galloway, and the entire Music Rising organization for allowing me and my staff to be a part of this very special and important event. Within this catalog you will find an amazing selection of historically important and personally significant instruments from some of the greatest musicians of our time. The values of the items that follow transcend the physical objects themselves – they represent the history of the musicians they come from and the work that they’ve created. These artists are woven into the fabric of our popular culture, and they are intent on using their carefully selected instruments to benefit those in dire need of help.

As my staff and I have prepared this auction, we have learned a great deal about each artist and also a great deal about Music Rising. The efforts of The Edge and Bob Ezrin on behalf of the musicians of the Gulf South are unparalleled. Money raised from this auction will go straight to where it is needed most, and I urge you all to spend some time perusing the catalog. In addition to the auction, there are many ways that you can support this worthwhile organization. Please visit www.musicrising.com and browse the available merchandise or simply make a donation of your choice. We hope you enjoy this catalog and the iconic musical artifacts within. Mike Van Eaton

Music Rising Music Rising was created in 2005 in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita to help restore the living breathing music academy that is New Orleans and the Gulf South. With the support of many partners we were able to replace instruments destroyed by the floods for thousands of individual musicians, as well as dozens of schools and community groups. Music Rising then went on to help musicians in Nashville and music education programs in other communities to recover from natural disasters. Today we are faced with the ongoing financial impacts to our entire industry of the pandemic, another kind of natural disaster. When it struck, musicians and crew members across the world quickly saw the cancelation of tours, club performances, recording sessions and music festivals. In New Orleans and the surrounding area, 73% of musicians rely on live gigs to survive and have been among the hardest hit in the entire country. The most current report shows that these same musicians are making less than 65% of the income they need to live. Guitar Icons: A Musical Instrument Auction to Benefit Music Rising at Van Eaton Galleries will take us back to our roots to help musicians of the NOLA region weather this storm until they are able to regain their livelihoods. The proceeds from this auction will go directly to those musicians and crews as cash payments that will hopefully help them to get back on their feet.

The auction includes an amazing collection of instruments and personal memorabilia from some of the world’s most iconic musicians, all friends of Music Rising. We have also created the first ever immersive, interactive, virtual, communal, on-line auction showcase and experience for fans and bidders on Ohyay (www.ohyay.co/musicrising). We encourage you to log-in, create a link to share and virtually meet your friends there and immerse yourselves in the rich content including contributions from your favorite artists as they talk about the instruments in the auction. We’ve also created new limited-edition Music Rising merchandise that can be purchased directly from our website at www.musicrising.com. We want to thank you personally for joining us in this endeavor. This auction is a way to help bring live music back to life in a part of the country whose musical culture has been hugely influential all around the world. We are both indebted to all of our supporters, particularly the artists who have donated instruments, and we thank you for joining us at Guitar Icons: A Musical Instrument Auction to Benefit Music Rising. Together we will help music to rise in the Gulf South once more. Edge and Bob

New Orleans Every wave of historic immigration into the USA has left an imprint of the ‘old country’ on its cultural map. For reasons both obvious and painful Africa seems to be an exception. Ask an Irish American where their people came from and chances are they have the name of a town, but ask an African American the same question and it’s highly unlikely that they will know. By some miracle New Orleans has preserved a connection back to a rich and authentic West African culture. Add to that the musical gift to the world represented by Jazz, RnB, rock n roll, funk, zydeco etc; all forms that trace their roots to the

New Orleans area, and it becomes obvious that New Orleans is a global cultural treasure of great value and importance. The community of New Orleans’ musicians are the custodians of the unique NOLA music heritage, passing it down through generations. The same is true for those who maintain the other traditions of African origin. This makes the city a communal repository of African culture unique in North America. We at Music Rising are proud to help preserve this heritage.

THE EDGE

Acknowledged as one of the best live acts in the world, U2 have toured the globe countless times, released 14 studio albums and won numerous awards, including 22 Grammys, an Oscar nomination, and the Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience Award.

The Edge has also written extensively for other projects, often in collaboration with Bono and U2, including music for movies (Captive, Gangs of New York, Golden Eye, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom); for animation (Batman TV series); for the stage (A Clockwork Orange by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark). The Edge is chairperson of the board for Endeavor Ireland, the global not-for-profit organisation that aims to support entrepreneurs. He also sits on the board of the Angiogenesis Foundation, as well as the advisory board of MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative and is a former board member of MIT Media Lab Europe.

Guitarist with U2, The Edge was born David Howell Evans in East London. A year later, he and his family moved to Dublin, where he attended Mount Temple School and met Larry Mullen, Bono, and Adam Clayton. In 1978 U2 was formed. The Edge is the band’s lead guitarist, keyboard player, and backing vocalist, as well as one of the principle songwriters and occasional lead vocal contributor. Described as one of the most innovative and influential guitar players of his generation, The Edge’s guitar playing is the hallmark of U2’s music and one of the most original and distinctive guitar styles in rock and roll history.

Lot 1. The Edge’s Hand-Painted “One” Music Rising Customized Gibson Les Paul. The Edge’s concert-played “One” Music Rising hand-painted and customized Gibson Les Paul. Numbered 96 on the back of the headstock, this was part of a series of 300 Gibson Les Paul guitars designed and customized to raise money for the charity when it first launched. Co-Founded by U2’s The Edge, Music Rising was created in 2005 as a call to help musicians regain their livelihood after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and Rita. As a tribute to the local culture, each guitar is handmade and hand-painted in a Mardi Gras themed color palette. No two are alike. Most of the plastic components standard on a Les Paul have been replaced with wood sourced from the States that were affected by Hurricane Katrina. The initial conceptual Music Rising logo is etched into the pickguard. After the initial run of 300 Music Rising guitars, no more were ever made. This particular guitar was retained by The Edge and played in 2010 during U2’s famous 360 tour, as well as during the The Joshua Tree tours of 2017 and 2019 during performances of the indelible hit song, “One,” as readily seen in photos and digital videos of the concerts. The Edge also played this guitar on “One” and “American Soul” during U2’s 2018 Songs of Experience shows. Additionally, The Edge played this guitar at the 2006 Grammy Awards with Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello, as well as at the very first New Orleans Jazz Fest & Music Festival following hurricane Katrina. Manufactured in 2006, the serial number 0318503126 is etched into the reverse of the headstock. The guitar retains an adjustable Pete Schmidt-brand black leather strap with diamond-shaped cutouts marked in black felt pen on the underside “CR#1 Les Paul.” A black textured Gibson hard shell case measuring 15.5”x43” and 7” deep is also included, which retains gaffer tape labels marked, “U2 Washington,” “One ‘E,’” and, “Touring Piece.” The instrument exhibits paint splotches, adhesive residue on the reverse, nicks, scrapes, and surface wear over all from frequent use.

The semi-hollow body guitar is constructed of Spanish Cedar and features a single bass-side f-hole and a set neck with extra deep tenon for added resonance and sustain. This is a custom-made instrument designed by Ezrin and modeled on the sound and preferences of several of the iconic guitarists he has worked with over the years. It will go all the way from sounding like a David’s Strat, or Steve Hunter’s 335 to sounding like Trey’s Languedoc. JOE WALSH

Legendary musician and songwriter Joe Walsh was born in Wichita, Kansas, on November 20, 1947. After attending college at Kent State, he joined the Cleveland-based James Gang in 1968, scoring hits with singles like “Funk #49” and “Walk Away” and gold certifications for the albums James Gang Rides Again (1970) and Thirds (1971). Walsh departed the group following the landmark 1971 live album, Live in Concert, recorded at New York City’s Carnegie Hall, which the James Gang were the first rock band ever to play. In 1972, the much-loved self-titled debut by Joe’s next band, Barnstorm, was released. The group’s second album, 1973’s The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get, yielded the biggest hit of Joe’s career to that point, with “Rocky Mountain Way.” Later, Joe found a new sense of home in the musical melting pot of Los Angeles, forming bonds with Glenn Frey and Don Henley, who asked him to join the Eagles. Walsh was able to bring his rock edge to the vocal harmonies he loved so much in the band. The result was lightning in a bottle, and the new line-up of Eagles defined an entire era with Hotel California. The album took the already-successful band to dazzling new heights: Hotel California went on to sell over 50 million copies and the title track won the band a Grammy for Record of the Year. Walsh next recorded and released a solo album, 1978’s But Seriously Folks…, which spawned his signature send-up of the rock and roll lifestyle, “Life’s Been Good.” In late 1979, the Eagles released The Long Run, which included three top ten hits and won the band another Grammy. By the following year, the extremes of being the biggest band in the land took its toll, and the Eagles split up. Joe followed up with a series of solo albums, 1981’s There Goes the Neighborhood, featuring perennial fan favorite “Life of Illusion.” You Bought It – You Name It came out in 1983; The Confessor in 1985; Got Any Gum? in 1987; Ordinary Average Guy in 1991; and Songs for a Dying Planet in 1992. He joined Ringo Starr’s inaugural All-Starr Band, toured extensively with Australian supergroup the Party Boys, and played on records by everyone from the Beach Boys, Bob Seger, and Steve Winwood to Michael McDonald, Warren Zevon, and Lionel Richie. In 1994, Walsh teamed up again with Don, Glen and Timothy to reform the Eagles, releasing Hell Freezes over and embarking on ten years of record-breaking tours. Their 2007 follow up album, Long Road Out of Eden, went platinum six-times over.

Lot 3. Joe Walsh’s “Bono” Gretsch Irish Falcon Guitar. Joe Walsh’s signed Gretsch G6136I “Bono” Irish Falcon. The hollow-body electric guitar consists of a laminated maple body with gold sparkle binding and a two-piece maple neck with an ebony fretboard. Equipped with High Sensitive Filter’Tron pickups, a Gretsch Cadillac “G” tailpiece, and gold acrylic pickguard with a “The Goal is Soul” graphic, this version of the Irish Falcon is modeled on the guitar Bono used on U2’s 2005 Vertigo tour. Manufactured in 2006, the guitar is marked with the serial number “JT06042289” on the internal paper label. Walsh has signed the body, below the left f-hole, in silver ink, “Joe Walsh.” A regular part of Walsh’s arsenal, the guitar is marked with a piece of tape on the neck, “Bg66” and an arrow on the front of the headstock. The instrument exhibits some scratching to the pick guard and light surface wear from use. It is accompanied by the original paperwork and Gretsch COA. A black Gretsch hard shell case is included, which measures 19.5”x46.5” and 6” deep and exhibits some minor scratches and scuffs.

He co-wrote some of the band’s biggest hits, including “Hotel California” and “Victim of Love,” and became a New York Times Best Selling author with his autobiography Heaven and Hell: My Life in The Eagles (1974-2001). His iconic double necked guitar was featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Play it Loud exhibit in May 2019 - the first major exhibition in an art museum dedicated entirely to the iconic instruments of rock and roll - and is currently on display in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s exhibit of the same name. He was inaugurated into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville in 2016, and the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2017. His most recent solo album American Rock ‘N’ Roll (BMG) was released on April 5, 2019.

Lot 4. Don Felder’s Signed Epiphone G-1275 DoubleNeck Electric Guitar and Signed Art Print. A Don Felder signed Epiphone G-1275 alpine white double-neck 6-sting/12-string electric guitar. Featuring a double-cutaway solid mahogany body, mahogany neck, and rosewood fingerboard, the instrument is equipped with Alnico Classic and Alnico Classic Plus humbucker pickups. Manufactured in 2021, the reverse of the headstock is engraved with the serial number, “21031530628.” Felder has signed boldly in black felt pen horizontally across the bottom of the body, “Don Felder.” The signed guitar is in very fine condition. Don Felder has become synonymous with the white double-neck 6/12 string as the hybrid instrument was the cornerstone of live performances of arguably the greatest rock song of the 1970s, Hotel California. Felder’s original white Gibson GS-1275 was exhibited at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in a collection of the most famous instruments in rock history, and now resides in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A signed original color print of artwork inspired by Felder’s signature guitar is also included. The Pop Art-inflected composition features a central image of the Gibson GS-1275 on a color field background with splatter overlay, the year “1978,” and the names “Felder” and “Hotel California.” The print is signed in black felt pen in across the bottom of the guitar. Measuring 28.5”x21”, the piece is in fine condition.

Lot 5. Vince Gill’s The Eagles Concert-Played Duesenberg Bonneville. Vince Gill’s Duesenberg Bonneville played in concert with rock legends The Eagles. This guitar is a sentimental artifact to Gill from a unique point in his career. Following the death of Glenn Frey, Gill joined The Eagles as colead guitarist, among other roles. As such, this Duesenberg Bonneville was used by Gill during some of his very first performances with The Eagles. It measures approximately 41.5” long and exhibits minor playing wear including faint surface scratches from stage use. It comes with a Duesenberg hard shell case and one of Gill’s The Eagles 2021 concert picks.

STEVE MILLER Steve Miller has been an enlivening presence on the American music scene for more than half a century – and, in the course of that era, his releases have sold tens of millions of records and been streamed several billion times. Miller’s Greatest Hits 1974-78 received the RIAA Diamond Award with sales of more than fifteen million copies. It is among the 25 best-selling albums of all time. At the start of his career, Miller soon became a mainstay of the San Francisco music scene that upended American culture in the late ‘60s. With albums like Children of the Future, Sailor and Brave New World, Miller perfected a psychedelic blues sound that drew on the deepest sources of American roots music and simultaneously articulated a compelling vision of what music - and, indeed, society - could be in the years to come. Then, in the ‘70s, Miller crafted a brand of pure pop that was smart, polished, exciting and irresistible - and that dominated radio in a way that few artists have ever managed. Hit followed hit in what seemed like an endless flow: “The Joker,” “Take the Money and Run,” “Rock’n Me,” “Fly Like an Eagle,” “Jet Airliner,” “Jungle Love,” “Swingtown” and “Abracadabra,” among them. To this day, those songs are instantly recognizable when they crop up online or on the radio - and impossible not to sing along with. Their hooks are the very definition of indelible.

Running through Miller’s distinctive catalog is a combination of virtuosity and song craft. And that’s no accident. His parents were jazz aficionados - not to mention close friends of Les Paul and Mary Ford - so, as a budding guitarist, Miller absorbed valuable lessons from that musical tradition. When the family moved to Texas, Miller deepened his education in the blues, eventually relocating to Chicago, where he played with Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy and Paul Butterfield. That range of sources informs his music to this day. In recent years, Miller has fully immersed himself in the blues and its many byways. As he has always done, he continues to find creative outlets for the full panoply of his musical passions. On his successful tours with the Steve Miller Band, he complements the commercial peaks of his extensive catalogue with lesser-known songs that expand his fans’ awareness of the range of his work. As a member of the Board of Directors at Jazz at Lincoln Center, he has curated and headlined a series of shows that explore themes like the bridge from blues to jazz in the music of guitar great T-Bone Walker; the distinctive sounds of the blues triangle of Memphis, Texas and Chicago; the resonances between the singular musical creations of Ma Rainey and Miles Davis; and the deep American roots music of Appalachia. In addition, at the request of Wynton Marsalis, he is defining a blues pedagogy for Jazz at Lincoln Center. He is also a member of the visiting committee of the Department of Musical Instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Indeed, five of his guitars were displayed in “Play It Loud: The Instruments of Rock and Roll,” a groundbreaking exhibition at the Met that ran for six months in 2019. Miller was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 and has been elected for induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022.

He has recently begun to open his vaults for the first time, releasing the acclaimed Welcome to the Vault box set in 2019 and Breaking Ground Live! August 3, 1977 in 2021. With each listen the beauty and immediacy of Miller’s work, whether at its most playful or most serious, is palpable. ALICE COOPER

Alice Cooper pioneered a grandly theatrical brand of hard rock that was designed to shock. As he heads back out on the concert trail with his band or with The Hollywood Vampires, Alice insists he’s still motivated to continue touring and recording albums. Currently gearing up for a return to touring (January 28 - February 09, 2022 in the USA, with Canada, the UK, Europe and more USA planned through the rest of 2022), Alice recently released a new album inspired by classic Detroit 60’s rock, recorded in Detroit with Detroit musicians, called “Detroit Stories.”

LOU REED Lewis Allan “Lou” Reed (1942-2013) was a massively influential songwriter and guitarist who helped shape nearly fifty years of rock music.

In the mid-Sixties, Reed befriended Welsh musician John Cale, a classically trained violist. Reed and Cale formed a band called the Primitives, then changed their name to the Warlocks. After meeting guitarist Sterling Morrison and drummer Maureen Tucker, they became the Velvet Underground.

With The Velvet Underground in the late Sixties, Reed fused street-level urgency with elements of European avant-garde music, marrying beauty and noise, while bringing a whole new lyrical honesty to rock & roll poetry. As a restlessly inventive solo artist, from the Seventies into the 2010s, he was chameleonic, thorny, and unpredictable, challenging his fans at every turn. Glam, punk, and alternative rock are all unthinkable without his revelatory example. The father of indie rock, he influenced generations of musicians from David Bowie and R.E.M. to Talking Heads and Sonic Youth.

A fan of doo-wop and early rock & roll, Reed also took formative inspiration during his studies at Syracuse University with the poet Delmore Schwartz. In the early 1960s, he briefly worked as a staff songwriter for the novelty label Pickwick Records.

Lot 26. Lou Reed’s Tour-Played “Goldie” Danny Gatton Fender Telecaster. Lou Reed’s tour-played Fender Custom Shop frost gold Danny Gatton Telecaster, nicknamed, “Goldie.” The guitar features a custom maple neck and vintage Telecaster pickups (the Joe Barden “hot rails” typically found on the Gatton Teles have been swapped out, as Reed frequently tried out new configurations). The top of the neck has embedded CZ studs corresponding to the inlaid dots on the fretboard. The bridge is stamped with the serial number, “DG0036”. “Lou played this guitar a lot! And loved it! It’s a great guitar,” said Stewart Hurwood, Reed’s guitar tech. With Goldie, Reed had an instrument that perfectly fit his playing style. Later in life, when Reed was asked for a charitable contribution, Hurwood recalls, “We went through and selected guitars for auction. Lou said, ‘Send these guitars to Edge.’ I was surprised and said, ‘You’re sending Goldie, too?’ He said, ‘Yes, I’m done with it.’ That was typical of Lou Reed. He would be looking for new great things and phase out of old favorites.” Goldie can be seen in stills and videos of Reed onstage playing his rendition of “Jealous Guy” at Radio City Music Hall for the tribute event Come Together: A Night for John Lennon’s Words & Music. It went on the road for the Ecstasy and NYC Man tours, last making the rounds in 2005-06. Reed’s fondness for the guitar is evidenced by the patina and wear visible throughout. There is wear and finish loss to virtually every fret on the fret board, scratching to the pick guard and control plate, light oxidation to the head plate, long horizontal scratches and surface wear to the back of the body, light spot finish loss to the neck and head, and finish loss and tarnish to the tuning pegs. The piece is accompanied by a Fender textured black vinyl over wood hard case marked “5” on the top edge. A piece of gaff tape on the case reads, “Lou Reed Locker #15.” Measuring 15.5”x41.5” and 4.5” deep, the case exhibits surface loss, wear, scuffs, scrapes, and tears to the covering.

LOU REED

Lou Reed and I were dear friends for 40 years, from the time we first met in Toronto to talk about working together on the “Berlin” album until the last time I spoke to him, just two weeks before he died in 2013. I loved and respected him deeply. He was one of the world’s great poets; someone who could tell a life in a stanza. And he wrote some of the most iconic songs in the rock and roll canon: Sweet Jane, Rock and Roll, Satellite of Love, Walk On The Wild Side, Caroline Says and many more. Lou was eternally curious and exacting in his art and life and particularly about the tools he used to make his music. He was a blistering rock guitarist and he was very demanding of his instruments. He played them hard and he required of them a purity of tone beyond what most guitars were capable of. He was not casual about what he played. Every guitar he had was tweaked and perfected and brought to the perfect place to make the sounds he heard in his head. When Edge and I did our first auction for Music Rising years ago, I had asked Lou if he would consider donating one of his guitars or some other memorabilia for it. As often happens with these things, he got caught up in touring and by the time he got back to his warehouse to put together a shipment for us, the auction had passed. Nonetheless, we were bowled over by the arrival of 4 stage played, Lou tweaked and maintained, brilliant sounding instruments. We determined that we would make them a centerpiece of the next auction whenever that might be. And that day has finally come. This is personal for me. I love Lou Reed. There’s a whole wall dedicated to him in my studio. And there’s a whole chamber dedicated to him in my heart. I’m so proud and honored that we could finally offer his beautiful instruments up to enrich some new owner’s life while raising money to support his fellow musicians in New Orleans and the surrounding area in their time of need.

Lot 27. Lou Reed’s Honey Blonde Danny Gatton Fender Telecaster. Lou Reed’s tour-played Fender Custom Shop honey blonde Danny Gatton Telecaster. The guitar features a pair of Joe Barden “hot rail” humbucking pickups and a specially shaped maple neck. The bridge is stamped with the serial number “DG0040.” Famous for their clear tones and ultra high-end clarity, Reed typically had Telecasters in his arsenal, favoring custom models as his career progressed. A honey blonde Gatton with its black pick guard can be seen in the video of the 1993 Velvet Underground reunion tour, played by Reed on classics like Pale Blue Eyes and I’ll Be Your Mirror. A honey blonde Telecaster was used on the Ecstasy tour of 2000 and NYC Man in 2003, last appearing in Reed’s road repertoire in 2005-06. The guitar shows wear from use to the pickguard, control plate, head plate, and bridge from use. The top of the neck has embedded CZ studs corresponding to the inlaid dots on the fretboard. A few of the studs toward the base of the neck are absent. Also included is Fender tan leatherette over wood hard case marked “8”. Measuring 15”x41.5” and 4” deep, the case exhibits a tear in the covering, sustained while on tour.

The guitar features a pair of Joe Barden “hot rail” humbucking pickups and a specially shaped maple neck. Lot 29. Lou Reed’s Blue Sadowsky Bass. Lou Reed’s custom electric bass guitar made by Roger Sadowsky of New York. Reed is known to have played this bass on stage for the song “Guilty” in early 2006, as attested to by Reed’s longtime guitar tech, Stewart Hurwood.

The Telecaster continued on the road for the Ecstasy tour of 2000 and NYC Man in 2003, last appearing in Reed’s road repertoire in 2005-06.

The bass features an offset-waist body shape, two Jazz Bass-style pickups, unbound rosewood fingerboard, and a blue-grey metallic finish. The bass measures approximately 46” long and is in very good performance-used condition.

The guitar shows wear from use to the pickguard, oxidation to the control plate and head plate, tarnish to the tuning pegs and some loss and cracking to the finish on the neck and headstock. The top edge of the neck has embedded CZ studs corresponding to the inlaid dots on the fretboard. The first stud is absent.

There is minor surface wear throughout from use, including scuffs, scratches, some tarnishing to the metal tuners, and general handling wear. Small strips of colored tape were applied near the control knobs and on the neck to aid Reed in his performances. There are small felt pen marks at the base of one control knob.

Also included is a Fender tweed over wood hard case with leatherette accents. A piece of gaff tape on the case is marked in pen, “Main.”

It comes in a hard shell case that has moderate surface wear throughout from use, and is coded “19.”

RONNIE WOOD Ronnie Wood has played in some of the most influential rock groups of all time and guested with a who’s who of British music. At the same time, he’s enjoyed a remarkable parallel career as a highly regarded artist and, as a natural raconteur, has won a record three prestigious Sony Radio Personality awards. Ronnie embarked on his musical career when he joined local outfit The Birds. The year 1967 marked a career milestone when Ronnie joined the Jeff Beck Group as bassist. With frontman Rod Stewart’s raw vocals, blues maverick Beck’s blazing guitar work and Ron’s instinctive bass lines, the Jeff Beck Group would write the blueprint for British hard rock.

With his musical versatility and bonhomie, Ron proved a natural fit for the group. Keith Richards best describes his and Ron’s bluesy guitar interplay as, “the ancient art of weaving.” Even while a member of the Stones, Ronnie has continued to perform with a string of musical legends, ranging from Dylan to Bo Diddley.

Despite an intense musical chemistry, band tensions often ran high and Ron briefly jumped ship to cult mod band, the Creation. Inevitably, the Jeff Beck Group would split for good in 1969 – just two weeks prior to a slot at Woodstock.

He formed the super-group the New Barbarians, featuring Keith Richards, former Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan, bassist Stanley Clarke, the Stones’ saxophonist Bobby Keys and drummer Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste from the Meters. He has also released a string of well-received solo albums.

Shortly, after the departure of singer, Steve Marriott, the remaining three members of the Small Faces approached Ronnie and Rod with the offer of starting a new band. Renaming themselves the Faces, the band would inject a buccaneering rock-and-roll spirit into a dreary music scene, drawing huge audiences for their rollicking live shows and influencing a generation of punk musicians waiting in the wings. Ronnie also released his own solo efforts during this time, I’ve Got My Own Album To Do (1974) and Now Look (1975). In 1975, a chance encounter with Mick Jagger at a party would lead to Ronnie finally landing his dream job as the Rolling Stones’ guitarist.

Outside of his musical pursuits, Ronnie’s passion for painting is undiminished and he continues to be an ever-indemand artist. It’s not just in the art studio where Ronnie is creating new work. His album Mr. Luck – A Tribute to Jimmy Reed: Live at The Royal Albert Hall, was released on 17th September 2021. Ronnie is back on the road with the Rolling Stones, continuing their mega No Filter tour across North America, and fans will be delighted to hear we can expect some exciting news from the Faces soon.

Lot 30. Ronnie Wood’s Signed American Original ‘50s Fender Stratocaster. Ronnie Wood’s Fender two-color sunburst American Original ‘50s Stratocaster, played on stage during sound check on the Rolling Stones’ 2021 No Filter tour. Inspired by the original 1950s Strats, the guitar is constructed of a solid alder body and a soft “V” maple neck with an enlarged 9.5” maple fingerboard. The instrument is equipped with three “Pure ’59” single coil pickups controlled by a five-way toggle switch, a six saddle synchronized bridge and sustain enhancing bone nut, and Kluson-style tuning machines. Manufactured in 2021, the neck plate is stamped with the serial number, “V2103950.” Guitarist for The Faces, The Jeff Beck Group, and, for many years, The Rolling Stones, the legendary Ronnie Wood has signed and dated the guitar in gold ink, “Ronnie Wood ‘21” along with a heart and an accompanying doodle. The guitar shows some light surface wear from use and is accompanied by a tremolo arm, a Ronnie Wood 2021/The Rolling Stones Hot Lips logo pick, its Fender COA, and the original manual. A tweed G&G hard shell case is also included, which measures 15”x41.5” and 4.5” deep and shows minimal handling. A new strap is included.

PAUL MCCARTNEY Born in Liverpool in 1942, Paul McCartney was raised in the city and educated at the Liverpool Institute. Since writing his first song at 14, McCartney has dreamed and dared to be different. One of the most prolific and influential musicians in history, his accomplishments and impact on music and popular culture are immeasurable. McCartney changed the world forever with The Beatles. He continued to push boundaries, making music history with his group Wings and as a solo artist. Equally renowned for his live performances as he is for his song-writing, McCartney set the world record for the largest paying concert attendance – 184,000 people - in Rio De Janerio in 1990. An 18-time Grammy winner and recipient of The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement and Trustees Awards, McCartney’s list of international accolades reads like no other as well as being recognized for decades of philanthropic activities.

A freeman of The City of Liverpool and Lead Patron of The Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, Paul McCartney was appointed Fellow of The Royal College of Music in 1995 by The Prince Of Wales. In 1996, McCartney was knighted by H.M. The Queen for his services to music, and in 2017 he was made a Companion Of Honour in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. His most recent solo (and 18th) studio album McCartney III secured the UK Album Chart’s festive Number 1 spot in 2020, furthering his lead as the UK’s most successful album act of all time.

Lot 31. Paul McCartney’s Tour and Studio-Played Left-Handed Wings Yamaha BB-1200 Bass. Paul McCartney’s tour and studio played left-handed Wings Yamaha BB-1200 electric bass guitar. This cherry burst BB-1200 was a principal weapon in McCartney’s sonic arsenal during his activity with Wings in the late 1970s, and he was frequently photographed playing it on stage, during live performances, and in the studio. Constructed of maple, alder, and mahogany with an ebony fingerboard featuring inlaid mother of pearl fret markers, the BB-1200 features a neck-through design for extra sustain and P-style split pickups. Prized for its consistency of tone and playability, the Yamaha bass was used prominently on Wings final studio album, Back to the Egg (1979). It was also played throughout the subsequent tour, and was used notably again on recordings for McCartney’s next two albums, McCartney II (1980) and Tug of War (1982). During his prolific and peerlessly influential career, McCartney has only been known to play less than a dozen basses with any frequency, returning to old favorites again and again over the decades. Few individual instruments have ever pressed to the forefront of his musical endeavors, providing a vehicle to move his sound in a new direction. This Yamaha BB-1200 is one of the most important Paul McCartney instruments ever offered at auction as it bridged two important chapters in McCartney’s career, helping to define the end of his run with Wings and laying the groundwork for his renewed solo efforts. The piece exhibits some pocking and crazing to the finish with nicks, scratching (most pronounced on the reverse), and surface wear over the body, and light rubbing to the fingerboard from frequent use. McCartney’s original brown leather Yamaha strap with adjustable silver-tone buckle belts is also included. The strap is also depicted in period photos of the instrument, and it shows some age in wear. These items are accompanied by the original Yamaha textured leatherette over wood hard case, which retains the original Yamaha toolkit.

Lot 37. Win Butler’s Signed Prop Bass Guitar from The Arcade Fire Music Video “Everything Now.” Win Butler’s signed prop electric bass guitar played in the 2017 music video for the lead single from Arcade Fire’s chart-topping album, “Everything Now.” The bass has been spray painted primer gray over the contoured doublecutaway body, head stock, and tuning machines. The logo of Everything Now Corp., the fictional soulless conglomerate that was a central component in both the concept and marketing of the album, is stenciled at the bottom right. In the video, Butler and the band wear matching gray Everything Now-branded coveralls and play instruments, painted the same industrial gray, during performance scenes shot in the desert scrub of Death Valley, California. After production, Butler signed the bass in orange felt pen on the body at lower left. An instantly recognizable piece for fans of the influential indie rock band, the instrument exhibits wear from its prominent screen use, such as scratches and scrapes to the gray paint, most concentrated on the back of the body and some adhesive residue at upper left. EDDIE VEDDER

Eddie Vedder has served as Pearl Jam’s frontman, in addition to a guitarist and primary lyricist, since 1990. Inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 as a member of Pearl Jam, Vedder’s trademark vocal style inspired a generation. His energetic and unvarnished stage presence coupled with his honest conversations with the audience led Pearl Jam as pioneers in live performances and social justice. Vedder’s signature ethos carries into his solo work. His first project came out in 2007 with the soundtrack album for the film Into the Wild and earned him a Golden Globe for the song “Guaranteed.” In 2012, Vedder’s sophomore solo album, Ukulele Songs, received a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album. Most recently, he collaborated with Glen Hansard for the Flag Day Original Motion Picture soundtrack and has released tracks off his forthcoming solo album Earthling. Eddie Vedder was born in Evanston, Ill., on December 23, 1964 where he became a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan before moving with his family to San Diego County in the mid-1970s. It was in southern California that Vedder began to play guitar and learned to surf. In 1990, Vedder received a tape of a band from Seattle that needed a singer. Vedder wrote lyrics for three of the songs, mailed it back to Seattle, and the songs ultimately became the Pearl Jam songs “Alive”, “Footsteps” and “Once”. Vedder moved north and was recruited by Ament, Gossard and McCready to join their new band, known then as Mookie Blaylock before becoming Pearl Jam. Vedder’s lyrics address many of the key issues of our times including gun violence, racism, and climate change. In addition to the activism inherent to the music, Vedder is an outspoken advocate for several progressive, social, and political causes, most notably abortion access and the environment. A longtime supporter of Surfrider Foundation, Vedder has most recently been vocal in banning offshore drilling along the US coast. “Though some may think there should be a separation between art, music and politics, it should be reinforced that art can be a form of nonviolent protest,” Vedder says. In addition to his activism, Vedder and his wife Jill McCormick Vedder co-founded the EB Research Partnership, dedicated to finding a cure for epidermolysis bullosa, a family of rare genetic disorders that affects the skin. The Vedder family is active in supporting both the work of the organization and the children who are impacted by the disorder. Vedder and his wife reside in Seattle with their two daughters.

Lot 38. Eddie Vedder’s Concert Smashed Fender Telecaster. Eddie Vedder’s concert-smashed Lake Placid-Blue Fender American Special Telecaster. This guitar was decorated by Vedder with an embroidered red/white Chicago Cubs “C” sticker and “34” sticker, a tribute to legendary Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton. It was used by Vedder, a Chicagoland native, during Pearl Jam’s August 20, 2018 performance at Wrigley Field and was smashed by Vedder at the conclusion of a cover of The Who’s “Baba O’Riley.” Vedder signed the guitar following the performance in silver sharpie, “Wrigley Field,” “August 20, 2018,” with Vedder’s signature below. On the pickguard, Vedder further wrote “Baba O’Riley” to commemorate the song which led him to smash this guitar in enthusiasm. The guitar includes a letter of authenticity from George Webb, Pearl Jam’s Equipment Manager, attesting to the provenance of the item. Included with the guitar are Vedder’s original strap from the performance, several of Vedder’s guitar picks, and a small assortment of wooden slivers and small pieces that fell off the smashed guitar during the performance. The body of the guitar is cleanly split through, and is kept in place by the pickguard. The guitar measures approximately 39” long. While not currently playable, the guitar displays very nicely as a concert-used Pearl Jam artifact with a unique history. A hard shell Fender case is included.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF AUCTION 1. This auction is presented by Love of Art, LLC. The auction is conducted under the terms and conditions set forth herein and applicable state and local laws. Announcements on the day of auction, whether printed or announced from the podium, shall supersede those in the printed catalogue. 2. Buyer’s Premium: All bids are subject to a Buyer’s Premium which shall be added to all placed successful bids. 3. Bidders and Buyers Bound: All persons placing bids, participating or registering in the auction agree to be bound by, and accept, the Terms and Conditions of the auction. 4. Qualification: All Bidders must meet auctioneers qualifications to bid. Any Bidder who is not a client in good standing of the auctioneer may be disqualified at auctioneer’s sole option and will not be awarded any lots. Such determination may be made by the auctioneer in his sole and absolute discretion prior to, during, and after the close of any auction. 5. Exclusion: The auctioneer reserves the right to exclude any persons of entity: (a) from bidding, or (b) from the floor of the auction on the day of sale. 6. Guaranty: If any entity places any bid, then the individual actually placing the bid shall guaranty payment for any successful bid. 7. Credit: Bidders shall establish credit with the auctioneer prior to placing bids. Auctioneer shall be the sole determiner of whether or not credit of any Bidder is satisfactory to auctioneer. If Bidder is not known to auctioneer, a proposed Bidder shall furnish satisfactory credit information (”SCI”) at least five business days prior to the auction. Such SCI shall include two credit references, a social security number, and appropriate credit card information. Auctioneer reserves the right to make a credit check of any proposed Bidder and such Bidder consents to the making of such a credit check. The acceptance of checks is in the auctioneer’s sole discretion and may be based on a variety of criteria, such as a credit bureau report, a bank check, or otherwise. The auctioneer will accept, up to five business days prior to the date of the auction, deposits for bidding, if the check is a local check; or up to 10 business days before deposit if the check is not a local check. Such deposits will be kept in an attorney’s trust account, and shall not be applied to any payment absent a successful recognized bid. Those bidding on the Internet must pre-register at least one business day before the auction and bids will not be accepted if pre-registration has not occurred. 8. Bidding Procedures by Mail or Fax: All mail or fax bids shall be signed. 9. Bidding Increments: The bidding increments shall be utilized as specified in Paragraph 15; and if any bid does not so conform, the bid will be lowered to the highest increment lower than the mail bid. Non-internet bids (such as, for example only, bids from the podium, fax, mail, or telephone bids) shall be treated similarly to floor bids in that the bidding increments shall be utilized; and if the bid does not so conform, the bid will be lowered to the highest increment that is lower than the bid. Any Bidder may once in an auction for a particular lot bid a “half-increment”. Once a “half-increment” bid is accepted no other half-increment bids will be accepted on that particular lot. No “buy” or “unlimited” bids will be accepted. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary herein the auctioneer may solicit or accept bids that are not incremental in nature. 10.

Identical Bids: Preference will be given to the bid first received.

11. Execution of Bids by Auctioneer: Auctioneer is not responsible for errors in your bids. CHECK YOUR BIDS BEFORE SUBMITTING THEM TO THE AUCTIONEER. Auctioneer is not responsible for any failure in executing mail or fax bids received on the day of the auction or later. All written bids should be received two business days before the auction. Auctioneer is not responsible for proper execution of bids submitted by telephone, mail, FAX, email, Internet, or in person, once the auction begins. Electronically placed bids may not be withdrawn. 12. Technology Failure: In the event that auctioneer experiences an outage of the Internet, or telephone service the auctioneer may extend the time for bidding on any lot in the auction. The auctioneer reserves the right to “take a break” for any reason during the course of the auction. 13. Delivery of Lots: Lots won by Bidders will not be delivered on the day of the auction. All items must be shipped, or they will be held for pick-up at a time when deemed permissible by local regulations pertaining to the Covid-19 virus. 14. Transfer of Title: Title to any lot shall only transfer after payment is successfully received in full by the auctioneer, including the Buyer’s Premium, any sales tax applicable, and any shipping or other charges.

The auctioneer reserves the right to extend additional credit by way of extended payment terms at its sole discretion. 18. Minimum or Nominal Bids: The auctioneer will set a minimum bid before a lot can be sold. Bids below the minimum bid may not be accepted or recognized by the auctioneer. Further, nominal bids, or small opening bids, or very nominal advances in the bidding may not be recognized by the auctioneer, in its sole discretion. Any lot not receiving any recognized bid shall be passed. 19. Winner of Lot: The highest qualified bidder recognized by the auctioneer shall be the Buyer. In the event of a tie bid, the bid received first by the auctioneer shall prevail. If there is a dispute among Bidders, the auctioneer may in his sole and absolute discretion re-offer the lot. There are times when a bid may not be recognized by the auctioneer; in that situation the recognized bid will be the winning bid regardless of whether or not the competing, but unrecognized bid, may have been higher. The auctioneer may in his absolute discretion re-open the bidding immediately after closing a lot to accept any bid in error not previously recognized. 20. Good Faith Bidding: Auctioneer reserves the right to honor any bid or to limit the amount of any bid. All bids must be made in good faith. The Buyer's Premium shall be 18% of the highest successful recognized bid for inperson, phone, or absentee bidding; 21% for bids placed through internet platforms. Auctioneer retains the Buyer's Premium as its own property. 26. Payment Terms: Payment is due upon the closing of the auction sessions, or upon presentation of an invoice. If payment in full is not received within (7) calendar days after the close of the auction, or within (5) calendar days of the invoice date, whichever is later, the auctioneer may in its sole and absolute discretion, void the sale. If the sale is voided for non-payment the successful bidder shall still owe the auctioneer its fees. Sales tax will be collected from any successful bidder unless the appropriate certificate is on file with the auctioneer at least five business days before the first date set for the auction. If the successful bidder choses to send an “echeck”, electronic funds transfer, or ACH payment, and it does not clear, the bidder authorizes the auctioneer to use the credit card on file. If payment is not made the auctioneer reserves the right to sell the lot to any under-bidder or in any future auction; any difference in the realized proceeds shall be the responsibility of the non-paying successful first bidder.
