History of the Palace Theatre History of the Palace Theatre

The Palace Theatre’s history begins with Victor Charas, an immigrant from Thegala, Greece. In June of 1914, Charas began construction insisting that the Palace Theatre resemble a smaller version of its namesake in New York City. Charas determined that the Palace Theatre would include modern safety and comfort features including firewalls and “air-conditioning.” The theatre was “air-conditioned” by large fans that blew air over great blocks of ice under the stage. Construction was completed in less than a year, and on April 9, 1915, the Palace Theatre celebrated its grand opening night with a performance of the play, “A Modern Eve.” The Palace Theatre featured many different kinds of entertainment including ballets, operas, plays, variety acts, philharmonic concerts, and performances by The Palace Professional Players. Early on, the Palace Theatre joined the Keith and Albee Vaudeville Circuit. Vaudeville filled the Palace Theatre with numerous shows each week. Vaudeville was responsible for launching the careers of many great entertainers including Jimmy Durante, Bob Hope, The Marx Brothers, Red Skelton, Sammy Davis Junior, Milton Berle, Al Jolson, Harry Blackstone, Sr. Bill Robinson a.k.a. Mr. Bojangles, Ray Charles and Don Knotts; many of whom performed at the Manchester, NH Palace Theatre. Following the era of the “Great Depression,” talking movies had largely replaced Vaudeville. Beginning in the 1930s the Palace Theatre, like so many of its competitors, began to transition itself into a “movie house.” By the mid 1960s, the Palace was struggling and was eventually forced to close its doors. The theatre fell into disarray as the seats were removed and the space was converted into a warehouse.

In the early 1970s, the Palace Theatre was slated to be torn down and converted into a parking lot. However, in 1974, Attorney John McLane and Mayor Sylvio S. Dupuis spearheaded an effort to purchase and preserve the Palace Theatre. With assistance from the Norwin S. and Elizabeth N. Bean Foundation, the Palace celebrated its re-opening on November 2, 1974. Since 1974, the Palace has seen both calamity and success! In December 1980, a pipe burst in the roof sending 70,000 gallons of water gushing over the rail of the balcony onto the lower level. In 1984, a fire on Hanover Street damaged most of the block, but the Palace Theatreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s firewall saved the Palace and the rest of Hanover Street! The Palace Theatre has withstood the test of time and has become a beautifully restored professional performing arts center that hosts its own professional company, youth and teen programs and presenting acts to entertain, inspire, educate and connect its members and the community. The Palace serves as a cornerstone of New Hampshireâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s thriving arts and entertainment scene and is a vital part of Manchesterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s downtown economic and social community. In July 2012, the Palace Theatre was selected as the 2012 Outstanding Historic Theatre by the League of Historic Theatres. This prestigious award recognizes that the Palace Theatre has demonstrated excellence through its significant community impact, quality of programs and services, and quality of the restoration or rehabilitation of its historic structure. In a city that once hosted 22 theatres, the Palace Theatre is now the sole survivor. As we continue to thrive in our 104th year, the Palace Theatre would like to take a moment to thank the many donors, sponsors, employees, and patrons who have invested in our organization. You have made our progress possible, and we look forward to many more years of producing exceptional live theatre here in Manchester, NH!

Jay Falzone (Mother Superior) is thrilled to be a part of the Palace’s efforts to bring light and laughter back to Manchester during these uncertain times. Past Palace credits include: Hairspray (Edna), The Producers (Roger), The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (Melvin P. Thorpe), and Little Shop of Horrors (The Dentist). He is one of the creators of the Calamari Sisters, who have toured the country for the past 10 years and is writing book & lyrics for Fat Kid Rules the World, a new Broadway-bound musical. Stephen Smith (Sister Amnesia) is ecstatic to be back onstage at the Palace, and incredibly grateful to the Palace for the opportunity to be a part of the theatre world’s efforts to return to performing! Previous Palace Credits: Hairspray, Nunsense, The Full Monty, and others! Stephen has traveled the world performing on cruise ships, in national tours, regional theatres, Disney and Vegas. He thanks Jay, Josh, and his friends and family for their love and support.

Marc Willis (Sister Robert Anne) Marc is delighted to be back on the Palace stage again. Palace credits include: The Wizard of Oz, Beauty and the Beast, Buddy Holly, 42nd Street, Anything Goes, Hairspray, The Producers, Les Miserables, Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Legally Blonde, and for the past several years, Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. A graduate of AMDA, some credits include: Greg/Gekko in PJ Masks-Save the Day LIVE, Prince Wednesday in Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood LIVE, Billy Idol in The Wedding Singer, and Linus in Charlie Brown. Dedicating this performance in memory of Mom.

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST Jill Pennington (Mother Superior) is delighted to return to the Palace stage, having most recently appeared in 42nd Street and Buddy Holly. She also works as a Palace house manager and frequent vocal coach and music director for Palace Youth Theatre. Jill is a dedicated music educator, working with elementary students in Bedford, NH. She earned her M.M. in Vocal Performance from Oklahoma City University, and her B.A. in Music from the University of Nebraska. Her greatest joy in life is being a (not-so-reverend) mother to Lincoln and Willa. Rachel Pantazis (Sister Amnesia) Rachel is overjoyed to be back at the Palace Theatre since her days of PYT and Teen Company! Before the pandemic, Rachel was working in Miami as a production singer for Carnival Cruise Line. Recent roles: Ado Annie in Oklahoma!, Betty Schaefer in Sunset Boulevard, Cathy in The Last Five Years, Nikki in Curtains, and Lucy in Avenue Q. <3 ABK. IG: @Repantz

Jennifer Sue Rockwell (Sister Robert Anne) is excited to be back frolicking with the Nuns! Last seen in Flashdance at the Palace, Jennifer has been performing for over 20 years across the country. Sophie Shaw (Sister Leo) Sophie is thrilled to be back at the Palace. Most recently, she was an Artist in Residence for the Palace’s Summer Children’s Series. Sophie was in several of last season’s show including The Wizard of Oz, Flashdance, Pianomen, and Mamma Mia! She would like to thank Carl and the entire Palace staff for their tireless efforts in returning to live theatre.

DIRECTOR BIOS Zachary Ryan (Music Director/Keyboard) Zach is thrilled to return to the Palace this season after serving as Musical Director for the past five Palace Professional Mainstage seasons. He has also been a Vocal Coach and a Music Director for Palace Youth Theatre, Palace Teen Apprentice Company, and Palace Teen Company. Off-Broadway Music Director credits: Sistas, the Musical and This One’s for the Girls. Past regional music directing credits include: Next to Normal (Seven Angels Theater), Chicago (AACT Award Best Music Direction), The Bikinis (Meadowbrook Theatre), I Love You... Now Change (The Stage), and 25th Annual... Spelling Bee (Shadow Lawn Stage). Many thanks to Oscar, family and friends for continuous support and this incredible cast and crew for their hard work and dedication!

Carl Rajotte (Artistic Director) The 2020-2021 Broadway in New Hampshire Season marks Mr. Rajotte’s 20th season as Artistic Director for the Palace Theatre. Mr. Rajotte has created his own original musical productions, with four premiering at American Music Theatre in Lancaster, PA and six brought to life right here on the Palace Theatre stage. Carl has been recognized by the Union Leader’s 40 Under 40, and had the honor of accepting the Palace’s 2012 Outstanding Historic Theatre Award from the League of Historic American Theatres in San Diego. Some other directing and/or choreographing credits include Legally Blonde at Boston Children’s Theatre and Arizona Broadway Theatre, Dance Explosion!, Swing Dance America, the national premiere of Ted Swindley’s Country Jukebox, the premiere of The Main Event in the renowned Copa Room of the Sands Casino and Resort, and many revues at the Tropicana Casino working with such acts as Connie Hayes and the Diamonds. Mr. Rajotte also had the privilege to work with Dawn Wells and Adam West in a production of Love Letters. Carl would like to thank the audience and many supporters for helping the Palace continue to bring top level entertainment to Manchester, New Hampshire.

• Tickets must be purchased over the phone at (603) 668-5588. We are not accepting cash at this time and tickets will be mailed to you. All seating will be Best Available at the time of sale and you may NOT change or move your seat once you are seated. • Seating will be under 50% capacity and blocked off for 6 foot social distancing. • All patrons, staff and volunteers (over the age of 2) must wear face coverings when entering and exiting the facility, waiting in lines, transiting to/from the theatre and to/from the restrooms. Face coverings are strongly recommended when seated and watching the performance. • Before entering the facility, patrons must answer “NO” to the following questions: 1.

Have you been in close contact with someone who is suspected or confirmed to have had COVID-19 in the last 14 days? (NOTE: Healthcare workers caring for COVID-19 patients while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment should answer “no” to this question)

Have you had a fever or felt feverish in the last 72 hours?

Are you experiencing any respiratory symptoms, including a runny nose, sore throat, cough, or difficulty breathing?

Are you experiencing any new muscle aches, significant tiredness, or chills?

Have you had any new changes in your sense of taste or smell?

Have you traveled in the past 14 days either: a. Internationally b. By cruise ship, or c. Domestically outside of NH, VT, or ME on public transportation (e.g., bus, train, plane, etc.)?

• Cast meet and greets have been suspended at this time. • Seating and high touch areas will be sanitized before every performance. • Plexiglass barriers are placed between staff and patrons at bars and box office. • Hand sanitizer stations are provided throughout the facility. • At the conclusion of the performance, the downstairs fire doors will be opened for exiting the theatre. • Special Marquee Room benefits are temporarily suspended for our Members at this time. Because of this inconvenience, we are adding 3 complimentary months to all Members’ yearly memberships.

The Palace Theatre is a smoke free environment. Please turn off and put away all noise making devices (including cell phones and pagers) for the duration of the performance. Any unauthorized photographic, video, or audio recording of this event is an infringement on Copyright Law and is strictly prohibited. The Palace Theatre reserves the right to ask any patron causing a disturbance to leave the premises without a refund ticket. The Palace Theatre does not cancel performances due to inclement weather. If you absolutely cannot attend your scheduled performance, please contact the box office prior to the performance. No refunds will be issued.

LATECOMERS

All latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the management in order to minimize distractions in our theatre space. Latecomers may be required to sit in the rear of the theatre. Refunds/exchanges will not be issued to latecomers.

ACCESSIBILITY

Designated locations are reserved for patrons with accessibility needs and patrons in wheelchairs. Please mention any special needs at the time of purchase with the box office. Assisted listening devices are available in the lobby.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES

For the comfort of our patrons, the Palace Theatre offers a wide array of beverages and snacks before the show and during intermission at our bar in the back. All bars accept cash or credit cards. Food and drink are not permitted in the theatre. However, bottled water is permitted in the theatre as well as drinks purchased in our spill-resistant souvenir cup.

PARKING

On-street parking is available on Hanover Street and the surrounding streets. Rates are typically $0.75 per hour Monday through Friday 8:00am to 8:00pm. Read meters for specific details and applicable hours. The Victory Garage on the corner of Chestnut Street and Amherst Street also offers paid parking for patrons. On Saturdays and Sundays, patrons may enjoy free on-street parking and free parking in the Victory Parking Garage.

TICKETS

Tickets may be purchased to any performance in person, by phone, or online. The Palace Theatre box office is open Monday thru Friday from 9am to 7pm, Saturdays from 9am to 5pm, and three (3) hours prior to each performance. The box office accepts cash, checks and all major credit cards. All discounts or promotions must be mentioned at time of sale. Please note that all sales and fees are final; there are no refunds.

CHILDREN

Unless attending a childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s show, our general guideline for the appropriate age of children is 6+. Please be considerate of other patrons if your child is unable to sit still and quietly through a performance. All children must have a ticket.
