DEAR FRIENDS, Can it be that the holidays are already upon us? Where does the time go? Despite the hustle and bustle, this is a season of tradition, and each year the traditions keep growing stronger here at the Center for the Performing Arts. Once again, our friends at St. Vincent are sponsoring our Holiday Series, and no Holiday Series would be complete without a visit from saxophonist Dave Koz & Friends, a perennial favorite at the Palladium. Joining Koz on Dec. 9 will be blues-rock saxophonist Mindi Abair, R&B singer-songwriter Jonathan Butler and smooth jazz/New Age pianist-composer Keiko Matsui. New to the St. Vincent Holiday Series this year are two unique events. On Dec. 1, actress-singer Jane Lynch (Glee) will delight us with her A Swingin’ Little Christmas show, a jazzy, funny and affectionate sendup of classic holiday TV specials. On Dec. 15, the Center will present All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914, a musical production based on the true story of British and German soldiers who briefly laid down their arms to share a moment of humanity amid the carnage of World War I. Other holiday-related events include New Orleans favorite son Harry Connick Jr., saluting both the holidays and his hometown on Nov. 27; country star Sara Evans with a live version of her At Christmas album on Nov. 29; and the Center’s fourth annual, four-party New Year’s Eve Extravaganza presented by Taft on – you guessed it – Dec. 31. If you get holidayed-out, our Katz, Sapper & Miller Series offers classic pop-rock from the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson and Styx’s Dennis DeYoung; the acclaimed songwriting of John Hiatt and Royal Wood; and smooth jazz with Boney James. For kids of all ages, our Old Town Companies Family Series brings you Lightwire Theater’s innovative neon puppetry. Whatever she does, Jane Lynch strikes gold By Scott Hall
You probably think of her as the villainous Sue Sylvester on Fox TV’s Glee, or demanding dog trainer Christy Cummings from the mockumentary Best in Show. In real life, however, actress Jane Lynch isn’t nearly that scary. She’ll prove it Dec. 1, when she brings her holiday musical revue, A Swingin’ Little Christmas, to the Palladium. The production is an affectionate sendup of classic Christmas albums and TV specials from decades past – cultural statements put forth by folks like Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, Perry Como, 8
Ella Fitzgerald and Rosemary Clooney. The program mixes traditional holiday tunes with original numbers of a similar vein, written, arranged and performed by Los Angelesbased trumpeter Tony Guerrero and his jazz quintet. Lynch spearheads the three-part vocal harmonies with help from friends Kate Flannery, best known as the dissolute Meredith on NBC’s The Office, and Tim Davis, vocal arranger for all six seasons of Glee. “We’re clean as a whistle,” promises Lynch, an Illinois native. “Sometimes we sound a little like the Andrews Sisters or the King Family.” Lynch points to Flannery as the secret weapon: “She has an amazing voice, and she’s a throwback – she sounds like somebody from the late ’50s, early ’60s. She’s also got a crazy sense of humor.” The group came together in 2016 to record an album version of A Swingin’ Little Christmas, and they introduced the live show that year at Feinstein’s at the Nikko, Michael Feinstein’s signature cabaret club in San Francisco. But Lynch and Flannery go back more than two decades
as veterans of Chicago’s improv comedy scene, having performed first with Second City and later with the Annoyance Theatre. Each moved on to other projects, in Lynch’s case an endless list of TV, film, cartoon and advertising work: Two and a Half Men, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Talladega Nights and beyond. One job was an insectinfested 2001 episode of The X-Files with actor Aaron Paul, later to become Breaking Bad’s Jesse Pinkman. “I just ran into him at a car wash, and we relived our X-Files experience together,” Lynch says, recalling the traumatic makeup ordeal. “They had to make a fake of my head that the spider web shot out of.” The big break came when Lynch was cast in a quirky Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes commercial directed by writer-comedian Christopher Guest, who then placed her in four of his acclaimed comedy films built around improvised dialog and documentary-style direction. The first was 2000’s Best in Show, a deadpan take on the culture surrounding high-profile dog pageants. “There was kind of a floodgate that opened after that,” Lynch says. “People started to know (Continued...)

my name, and if they didn’t know my name, they knew my face. So offers started coming my way.” Soon came Glee, an unlikely TV smash about plucky misfits in a high school choral group. Lynch won Emmys and countless other awards as her character evolved improbably from cheerleading coach to high school principal to vice president of the United States. After that, opportunities abounded, and in 2013, Lynch got her bucket-list ticket to Broadway as the nasty Miss Hannigan in Annie. That gave her the bug to sing, and she

thought of Flannery. “After Glee ended and The Office ended for her, we got together and decided, ‘Let’s put our act on the road,’” says Lynch, who meanwhile serves as host of NBC’s Hollywood Game Night. “And we found this terrific band! We’re the luckiest girls, because we’ve got these five guys out of Orange County, and they’re called the Tony Guerrero Quintet, and they go with us everywhere. They’re the best. They’re great jazz players, but they can also play anything else.”

BONEY JAMES Friday, November 16, at 8PM | The Palladium Saxophonist and composer Boney James was a sideman for Morris Day and the Isley Brothers before launching a solo career that has sent 11 albums to the top of Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. Most recently, 2015’s Futuresoul spent 11 weeks at No. 1, and 2017’s Honestly also hit No. 22 on the Current Albums pop chart. James produced Honestly and co-wrote all but one track, his interpretation of the Johnny Mercer-Hoagy Carmichael classic “Skylark.” Among other honors in the course of his career, James has received a Soul Train Award, four Grammy nominations and two NAACP Image Award nominations.

Friday, November 16, at 8PM | The Tarkington Canadian singer-songwriter Royal Wood has drawn comparisons to Randy Newman, Tom Waits and the Beatles with tunes that draw from British pop, Tin Pan Alley’s melodic traditions and the Southern California folk-rock vibe. He has received two Juno Award nominations and an iTunes Songwriter of the Year title. Wood’s 10th and latest album is Ever After the Farewell, inspired by life events including his recent marriage and the loss of his father. The Outside Music release was recorded in London with producer and songwriter Jamie Scott (Ed Sheeran, One Direction) on a console once used by the Fab Four at Abbey Road Studios.

ABOUT THE CENTER The mission of the Center for the Performing Arts is to engage and inspire the Central Indiana community through enriching arts experiences. The Center for the Performing Arts is a nonprofit arts and education organization responsible for the operation and programming of a three-venue campus at Carmel’s City Center. Together, the Palladium, the Tarkington and the Studio Theater create a welcoming place for the community to engage with all forms of the performing arts. The campus also provides a home for the affiliated Great American Songbook Foundation and hosts six Resident Companies, along with other organizations that utilize the facilities for their events. Since opening in 2011, the Center’s campus has hosted over 1,800 performances and welcomed more than 840,000 patrons representing all 92 counties in Indiana, all 50 states, and 24 nations. Each year the Center provides access to the arts for thousands of people of all ages – building community, enriching lives, and inspiring minds young and old. Accessible parking: Through December, parking spots for people with disabilities are available along the south side of City Center Drive, and also in the Center Garage on 3rd Avenue SW and the Veterans Way Garage off Range Line Road. Accessible valet parking is available at the Palladium’s West Lobby entrance. See parking details below. Arrival: Street level and elevator access is available in the Palladium’s West Lobby located at the 3rd Avenue entrance and is also available in the East Lobby located near the Monon Greenway. Seating: Wheelchair accessible seating is located in various sections of the venues. Special seating arrangements may be made in advance by calling the box office at 317.843.3800. PARKING
Free parking: Free self-parking is available in the Center Garage just south of the Tarkington (enter from 3rd Avenue SW) and the Veterans Way Garage east of the Center (enter from Range Line Road). Valet parking: Starting 90 minutes prior to every Palladium performance from Nov. 17 through Dec. 31, valet parking is available at the West Lobby entrance. Sponsored by Jaguar Indianapolis and Land Rover Indianapolis, valet service may be purchased for $15 cash at the door or in advance through the Box Office with your ticket purchase. The service is complimentary for drivers of Jaguars and Land Rovers. RESTROOMS
Restrooms are located in the lower Salon level, Payne & Mencias Box Tier and Gallery level of the Palladium, and on the first floor in the lobby of the Studio Theater and the Tarkington (all restrooms are handicap accessible.) COAT CHECK
Coat check services are available on a seasonal basis at the west side of the lower Salon level near the restrooms at the Palladium. Coat room facilities are also available at the Tarkington and the Studio Theater. FOOD & BEVERAGE
Concessions are available before the performance through intermission. Food is not permitted in the theaters. Beverages purchased at the Center are allowed in the theaters. ASSISTED LISTENING DEVICES

ABOUT THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK FOUNDATION The mission of the Great American Songbook Foundation is to inspire and educate by celebrating the Great American Songbook. The beautiful melodies and thoughtful lyrics created by the musical masterminds of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood during the first half of the 20th century represent the golden age of American popular music. Based at the Palladium, the Great American Songbook Foundation is permanently affiliated with the Center for the Performing Arts and is one of only five worldwide Cultural Affiliates of the Los Angeles-based GRAMMY Museum®. The Foundation carries out its unique mission to preserve America’s rich musical legacy in numerous ways: • The Songbook Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the Great American Songbook, with a new class inducted each year. A permanent exhibit honoring the people who created and popularized this extraordinary music is located in the Shiel Sexton Songbook Lounge on the Palladium’s Gallery level. • The Songbook Archives houses sheet music, recordings, and other artifacts from the careers of artists such as songwriters Meredith Willson (The Music Man), Johnny Burke (“Swinging on a Star”), Gus Kahn (“It Had to Be You”), and Hy Zaret (“Unchained Melody”). • The Songbook Exhibit Gallery presents rotating interactive exhibits that share the music, history, and culture of the Songbook. • The Songbook Academy® Summer Intensive is a national performing arts program for high school vocalists and the only one of its kind dedicated to the music of the Songbook. • Perfect Harmony provides therapeutic music programming for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other neurodegenerative conditions.
