on’t you love a good yarn? A real life feelgood story that could be a film in its own right? Step forward Callum Turner. You’ve probably seen him before (in the BBC’s excellent War and Peace or in a Burberry ad campaign), but this autumn he’ll be going mainstream when he shares screen time with Eddie Redmayne in the second instalment of JK Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts. But unlike his Eton educated co-star, Callum grew up on a council estate with his single mum, devouring films as a child. Little did he know then that he would one day star in them too. Benji Wilson meets the cheeky charmer on page 74. Green is the only black, says Alice B-B

ANDBAGS FLUMMOX ME. I’m in awe of friends who switch bags from day to night, school run to gym, lunch to cocktail. I don’t even do it seasonally. Whether it’s laziness, lack of time or just ‘what’s the point?’. Or maybe it’s my aversion to the obsession with ‘new’, which is both economically and ecologically unsustainable. So every few years, I find a bag, then whatever the weather... that’s it. An appendage, a third arm, a Mary Poppins hold-all. But even I realised that my current limb was feeling sad and looking tatty. It’s a mirrored, pompom, sequin evil-eye affair by Figue… It’s made me happy, but it’s time for handbag heaven. So I found a new friend; a tan Gucci satchel with classic red and green webbing strap. And the best bit, it’s vintage from Vestiaire Collective. However, when it turned up the poor thing looked knackered, so I called up The Restory, a company that gives a second act to clothes and accessories, pieces whose narrative is far from over. They collected, gave

me an acceptable price (£238), sent photos during the restoration and six weeks later my bag arrived; cracks softened, re-tanned and cross-body strap steam cleaned. It’s genius. I wonder if they take humans? NOT JUST LOO ROLL OR GLASS BOTTLES. Recycling’s gone proper fancy. I’m currently spending my days in a sweatshirt by Sea, Soul and Snow that’s soft as a mouse’s tummy, but made from waste organic cotton blended with recycled plastic bottles. Then at Chelsea Flower Show, I spied a great patterned rug by Weaver Green and guess what? Yup, recycled plastic. Even H&M has got in on the act with its new Conscious Collection made from recycled cashmere and velvet made with recycled polyester. Thank God Planet Positivity has switched from being hairy-legged Green Party chat to mainstream conversation – because it’s the only option. A HALF-ARSED ATTEMPT AT PHILATELY. That’s as far as I got as a collector in my childhood. But a visit to new hotel Heckfield Place in Hampshire, got me thinking. Best thing a cabbie has ever said to you?

years ago we built a sort of ‘village’ for our designers, near to the workshops, and that’s where I’m mainly based. We eat, hang out and entertain our visitors who come from all over the world.

What has been the most valuable piece of advice you have ever received? I was raised in a Benedictine monastery and I loved the philosophy, which taught me about community and contributing. What’s your favourite game? Poker. We’ve got a big round marble table in the Dome Home and we’ve had many a good (and late!) poker night there.

Where do you go to ‘lose’ yourself? The lychee garden in our ‘village’. You’re literally sitting in the middle of nature. What’s one of your daily rituals? Every day is different, and I like it that way. I do like to come home and listen to music though, a bit of The Beatles, Rolling Stones or Bob Marley.

If you could start again, what one thing would you change about your life so far?

Favourite secret place in London for a good night out? At the moment I’m spending quite a bit of time in Chelsea, where we’ve just opened our new flagship gallery at Bluebird. We’re looking forward to hosting people for regular events and parties.

I’m not one for dwelling on mistakes, I think it’s better to dust yourself down, learn from it, and ask what’s next. What was the last song you listened to that made you dance? We host our At Home Show every year, and I love that just before it, someone invariably will put on Start me Up by the Stones. You just can’t keep still.

What never fails to bring a smile to your face? Talking to people who have loved one of our designs enough to bring it home and make it part of their everyday life. We had a couple once who both fell in love with our Shabby sofa, he said he proposed when he realised they’d never fight over furniture like most couples do! I love stories like that.

What brings out the worst in you and why? I don’t really like being told what to do! I suppose I’ve always been a bit of a rebel. What would really improve your life? I’m very lucky that my passion – or obsession – has turned into my career, there’s nothing else I’d rather be doing.

Where was the last place you ‘discovered’?

I recently spent some time in a village right on the edge of rural China, it was the most incredibly peaceful place up in the mountains. We met a family of weavers, who spend days weaving linen by hand and then dye it using natural indigo that grows in the mountains – the techniques are thousands of years old. Funnily enough, one of the things that drew me to Bluebird was the idea that you could just get in a cab and say, ‘Take me to Bluebird’. Everyone knows where it is.

What is the last book you read and what did you think of it? Setting the Table by Danny Meyer. He started the Union Square Café in New York and went on to become one of the world’s most respected and successful restaurateurs.

f you have a penchant for vintage jewellery then Bentley & Skinner is the place for you. If you’re looking for a Victorian Rivière necklace of amethysts or garnets, an Art Deco brooch or some ‘lookat-me’ earrings then a cruise past Bentley & Skinner’s seductive windows in Piccadilly will tell you that you need look no further. Between them Bentley & Skinner have been selling lovely jewellery for over 180 years. Until 1998 they were each separate companies, both with shops in Bond Street. When they joined forces (Skinner largely because Richard Skinner had no sons to pass the business on to), each had something special to bring to the party – Skinner & Co had been providing jewellery to royalty ever since it was asked to find some pieces for Queen Victoria in the later part of her reign, while Bentley & Co had a very special collection of work by Fabergé. It’s still a family business, run by Mark Evans, a great nephew of one of the founders and since it moved into its prime position at 55 Piccadilly in 2010, it has become a cult source of one-off, precious engagement rings, wedding rings, bracelets and necklaces, as well as being a wellknown source of vintage pieces by Cartier and Giuliano. Though it is best known for its antique jewellery, today it often engages with contemporary artists. For instance, in 2009 it made Damien Hirst’s famous £50m skull ‘For The Love of God’ and it recently became the only London source of Russian French Art Deco designer, Ilgiz Fazulzyanov’s diamond and carved emerald brooch wonderful jewellery. For those who haven’t come across his work he’s often inspired by the floral motifs of Art Nouveau, by butterflies and dragonflies as well as traditional symbols from Central Asia. There’s usually a selection, too, of silversmith Jocelyn Burton’s goblets, decanters, tumblers and carafes. Bentley & Skinner are old-fashioned jewellers Art Deco emerald and in the best sense of the diamond plaque ring world – they can sell you a fine string of pearls, restring your own pearls if they need it, mend broken pieces, value your collection, devise new settings for inherited jewels as well as inspire you with a small selection of absolutely up-to-the-minute designs by a select few of the world’s finest designers. Power dressing: I always feel my best in my navyblue Tom Ford tux. Whenever I have a wedding or black tie affair, this is my go-to look.

Event dressing: I’m a trainer, so typically, I’m always in workout clothes, but I love dressing up when I can in my custom1 made Saint Laurent or Tom Ford suit. If it is more casual, I go for Dolce & Gabbana. Style crush: Nothing is more chic than the older man decked out in Italian designer clothes; I aspire to be that stylish. Lounge lizard: I live in my Alo Yoga sweats and long-sleeved shirts. All of their clothes are soft – almost like pyjamas. Wardrobe failsafe: A great pair of jeans. Having jeans that fit makes me feel polished and put together. Paired with a simple white T-shirt and I’m good to go. My favourite brands are 7 for All Mankind and John Elliot.

Secret labels: One of my favourite labels that I rarely see men wearing is Hudson. Some of my best denim jeans and jackets are made by them, and for the look and fit, the price is very reasonable. Best online retailers: My go-to is Mr Porter, which is easy to navigate and the customer service is exceptional. Here in New York, packages arrive the next day, which is awesome for last minute events.

Everyday Uniform: When I’m not at P.Volve training clients, my everyday uniform is a pair of jeans, suede Saint Laurent boots and an Orlebar Brown tee – simple, clean and, most importantly, very comfortable.

I want to start streaming workouts in my living room, specifically practicing yoga. Owning my own business and training clients back to back, I rarely have time in my day to incorporate a workout – and one that is meditative – of my own. Style cheats: I love my Saint Laurent leather jacket. I can really wear it with anything; it’s one of those pieces that just makes an outfit on point.

SEASONAL WELLBEING Wellbeing guru Liz Earle encourages us to make the most of nature’s bounty over the coming months. Here are her tips for staying well as the seasons change:

Sticky pear, nut and ginger loaf Rich in the antioxidant vitamin C, pears help support the immune system, maintain connective tissues and are an excellent source of dietary fibre. INGREDIENTS

» 165g unsalted butter » 115g dark brown sugar » 3 pears peeled, cored and diced » 1 tbsp ginger preserve » 4 tbsp honey » 200ml milk » 250g spelt flour » 1½ tsp baking powder » 2 tsp ground cinnamon » 2 tsp ground ginger » 2 eggs, beaten » 75g mixed nuts (walnuts, » hazelnuts, almonds) » 3 pieces stem ginger, chopped small » 2 tbsp ginger preserve » Handful of mixed nuts, » roasted » Mascarpone (optional)

Grease and line a two-litre loaf tin. 2 Heat a tsp of butter in a pan, sprinkle in a tsp of the sugar and stir in the pear chunks. Add the ginger preserve and caramelise for 2-3 mins, make sure the pears are covered but retain their shape. Cool. 3 Melt the rest of the butter, sugar and honey in a pan. Add the milk, stir and cool. 4 Sift the flour into a bowl with the baking powder and dry spices. Make a well and pour in the milk mixture, fold the flour in to form a smooth batter. Then mix in the eggs, nuts, stem ginger and caramelised pears. 5 Pour mixture into the tin and bake for approx. 1 hour. 6 Drizzle over two tbsp of ginger preserve and sprinkle with chopped nuts. 7 Serve warm or cold, with mascarpone if you like.

Royal Academy, London W1 Oceania is the RA’s artistic homage to the 250 anniversary of Captain Cook’s voyage to the Pacific, and will present art and artefacts from the past 500 years up to the present day. If it succeeds as well as Aztecs (2002) or Turks: A Journey of a Thousand Years (2005), it is bound to be the artistic talking point of 2018. Two hundred works from private and state spheres will bring the pacific region and its archipelagos to the public imagination. From Tahiti in Polynesia to the islands of Melanesia, art flourished there over centuries. In a giant curatorial challenge, the RA’s will land canoes, deities and contemporary art in its 18th-century exhibition rooms. It’s a tough gig but who better to tackle it than the ancient institution which first sponsored Cook’s trip in 1768, to track the transit of Venus across this great swathe of the earth. Sebastian Faulks The German Occupation of France between 1940 and 1944 is the darkest period of modern French history, until recently too painful, too divisive for the French themselves to confront. It was easier simply to bury it. Sebastian Faulks’ new novel takes on the moral, political and practical equivocations which underlay collaboration and resistance, giving us a good dose of history and an affectionate tour of Paris in the process. It also has much to say about the impact of migration, on the migrant and the host country alike. The novel’s principal protagonists are all visitors to Paris, outsiders. Tariq is a young Moroccan who runs away from home, coming to France as an illegal immigrant. Hannah is an American academic researching the role of women during the Occupation while Julian is a British writer and longtime resident of the city. Although all three are outsiders, Paris nonetheless forms part of their mental hinterland – the echoes of the title – and as the novel progresses they gradually reconcile themselves with the past. Paris Echo teaches us much about France under the Occupation. It is a good example of how fiction can be just as effective – and more engaging – a platform for the retelling of history as conventional historical writing. Likewise, one of the novel’s themes is historical awareness; as Hannah explains, ‘it’s what gives depth to the day. It’s the silver behind the glass. Otherwise, life would be like being permanently on the Internet. Just one-dimensional. Click. Open. Shut. Click’. During the novel the scales fall from Tariq’s eyes as he begins to grasp the depth and significance of Paris’s history. The rich, varied names of the city’s Metro station act as his primer: BarbesRochechouart, Jacques Bonsergent or Courneuve-8 may 1945 among many others commemorate specific episodes and heroes in the city’s long history. It is an unavoidable, indissoluble part of life in the city, intrinsic to its charm and inseparable from its present, and the animating spirit of this enjoyable, stimulating novel. Hutchinson, £20

Love is Blind tells the story of the obsessive, ill-fated love affair between Brodie Moncur, a young Scottish piano tuner, and Lika Blum, a siren-like Russian soprano. The action takes place between 1894 and 1906, criss-crossing Europe from Edinburgh to St Petersburg. Flight is the only escape from the vortex of turmoil and vengeful rivals in love into which Brodie has fallen. Along the way Boyd conjures up some enjoyable characters: Brodie’s tyrannical father, a Scottish minister; John Kilbarron a bombastic, drunken concert pianist and Lika herself, both manipulative and vulnerable. THE PENGUIN BOOK OF THE CONTEMPORARY BRITISH SHORT STORY Edited by Philip Hensher

‘The British short story is still producing masterpieces,’ writes Philip Hensher, the editor of this new anthology of 30 stories written since 1997. Many of the contributors are well known: Hilary Mantel, Martin Amis and Graham Swift, for example, while others (to this reviewer, at least) are less so. Hensher bemoans the difficulties authors now face in bringing their short stories to public notice, but his anthology proves that the British short story nevertheless remains in rude, entertaining health. PRAGUE SPRING Simon Mawer

In his new novel, Simon Mawer returns to Czechoslovakia, the setting for his The Glass House of 2009. The story follows two Oxford undergraduates as they hitchhike across Europe during the summer of 1968. Arriving in Prague, they witness the Russian occupation of the city, the tanks rolling in to crush the liberal aspirations of Dubcek’s regime. The novel takes a while to come alive but Mawer captures superbly the fear and suspicion that dominated life in the former Communist Bloc countries while his description of the battles between the heavily armed Russian troops and the young Czech protestors is shockingly atmospheric. was brought up in the People’s Republic of South Yorkshire. Back then it was all coal mines and steel with Sheffield its manufacturing jewel in the crown. After retiring from athletics I represented a constituency in Cornwall that still maintained the remnants of tin mining and a bygone age. Over a quarter of a century later, I found myself back in touch with mining, this time in Australia (which I consider my second home). Iron ore mine, Christmas Creek sits at the heart of the Pilbara, pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Over lunch with the Chief Operating Officer, we were discussing the plight of one of his staff who had survived a potentially deadly snake bite but was back at work just three months later. He observed that the victim had a heart the size of Phar Lap. ‘Phar Lap was…’ I cut him off. I knew Phar Lap was the stuff of Australian legend. He looked surprised; Bradman, Laver, Warne, Waugh, Elliott also sit in that pantheon. But none of them have four legs or won the Melbourne Cup – one of the world’s most prestigious Thoroughbred races. Phar Lap won in 1930, lifting the trophy as the shortest price favourite in the history of the Cup. And if Phar Lap is Australia’s equine legend, its human one is Bart Cummings. He has walked off with 12 trophies and they stretched from 1965 to 2008. So this month, my great sporting day out is the Melbourne Cup. It is nearly 20 years since I made my debut at the Flemington race course in Melbourne. After Australia adopted the metric system in 1972, it ceased to become a two-miler and is now raced over 3,200m for three-year-olds and over. first run in 1861. On that occasion, a not so modest cash prize and a gold watch was at stake. Today’s Melbourne Cup is a public holiday in the city. So, on the first Tuesday in November, most Aussies are only really thinking of one thing; the atmosphere matched only by the alcoholic intake. In Melbourne, that seems to start around sunrise. It may be Australia’s most notable day out but it’s not an entirely domestic affair. In 2012, the first seven finishers in that year’s cup were bred in Ireland. And only a year earlier, a French-based horse lifted the trophy. The impact of the race also goes way beyond betting slips on the day. In 2003, the Cup itself began an annual tour around Australia, attracting on one occasion over 120,000 people at Flemington. Add it to your bucket list.

ROAD TEST Harley Davidson’s Road King Special is just that, says Jeremy Taylor

Mods and rockers, Hell’s Angels and all those screaming exhaust pipes – it’s no wonder motorcycles have suffered such a bad press. In the past, owning a motorbike could make you a social pariah. Now the best machines cost more than a family hatchback and are ridden by wellheeled city-types looking for wind in the hair fun. But if one of those noisy sports bikes painted in a garish colour scheme isn’t your thing, the obvious alternative is a Harley-Davidson. The iconic American brand offers a range of machines that give off a laidback, super cool attitude. Pick of the bunch is the latest Road King Special. The perfect all-round cruiser, it majors on style and provides instant cred at it chugs around the city streets. Powered by a thumping engine, the whopping V-twin has a low-down grumble that is pure theatre. Only a Harley sounds this good purring down the Kings Road. That said, a Harley isn’t the best machine for cruising around town, it’s a big, heavy bike. The Road King needs a car-sized parking space too, while the left-hand clutch lever can be a work-out in itself. The latest ‘Special’ is a genuine eye-catcher, partly thanks to the lack of retro chrome – although there are plenty of other Harleys to polish if that’s your thing. There’s no windshield either but a clip-on accessory is available at extra cost (as in our photo). RATING: 3/5 saddlebags

If you never get a chance to cruise Route 66 along the highways of America, don’t worry. Just pottering along the A20 through Kent astride a Harley-Davidson can be equally as satisfying. The Road King was designed for long-distance journeys and it’s superbly comfortable. I’ve just ridden 800-miles from London to Prague and enjoyed every minute of it. Well, apart from the heat off the engine. The latest model has an oil-cooled cylinder head – Harley has always been air-cooled for years. That does make the bike smoother but it’s still boiling hot when you come to a standstill in traffic! Raised up ‘Ape’ handlebars give that ‘easy-rider’ look and there are enormous foot plates, instead of pedals to rest your feet. The low seating position also makes it easy to plant your boots firmly on tarmac. The Road King is surprisingly agile at low speeds, while that squat seating position makes cornering a simple pleasure, even for a novice like me. It inspires confidence on a fast, sweeping bend through the countryside. Most modern bikes are loaded with safety technology these days, this one even has ABS brakes. New front forks and shock absorbers add to the improved ride. Perhaps most importantly, it’s one of the prettiest bikes on the road – and nowadays you don’t need to be a Hell’s Angel or a rocker to ride one too. RATING: 4/5 boots

Callum Turner has gone from a council estate in SW3 to the big screen with a leading lady love interest. BENJI WILSON meets the rising star who’s unashamed of his roots

Fashion director NICOLE SMALLWOOD Photographer DAVID GOLDMAN orry I’m late,’ says Callum Turner, ‘I was just dropping my girlfriend at the Tube and I got stuck in traffic.’ It all sounds blissfully mundane, until you realise that the girlfriend in question is Mission Impossible and The Crown star Vanessa Kirby and Turner is about to appear in the next Fantastic Beasts movie – it’s hard to believe he drives his own car, let alone that she takes the Underground. But then again, Turner is insistent that, ‘I’m not really famous like the others,’ where by ‘the others’ he means Fantastic Beasts’ Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law and, for the new film, a certain Johnny Depp. For now, at least, Turner’s probably right: if you know his face it’ll be from the BBC’s War and Peace, where he smouldered and swaggered as Anatole Kuragin, or from Channel 4’s Glue, where he was a tearaway stablehand; or from 2015’s Green Room, where he was the lead singer of a punk band. You might also have seen him on posters and magazines: those cheekbones and gimlet eyes have also made him a Burberry model. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, with a script by JK Rowling, looks set to change all that. Turner plays Theseus Scamander, the older brother of Redmayne’s Newt Scamander. ‘He’s the head Auror at the Ministry of Magic,’ says Turner, ‘super successful; you can’t go any higher. He´s part of the establishment and he just wants to fight the good fight.’ Turner very much isn’t part of the Establishment. He grew up on a London estate and has the wide Lahndan accent to prove it. At state school he was, he says, cheeky and rebellious. Eddie Redmayne, his on screen brother is, by contrast, fully paid up Establishment with the Eton education to prove it. Yet Turner says that the two of them found plenty in common. ‘It was actually really easy. Eddie’s one of the best actors that we’ve got in England and he grew up in Chelsea too so we had lots of shared memories from childhood that we sort of fleshed out early on. Like we swam in the same pool, we both love Battersea Park, we sort of walked the same streets. There’s something about being from exactly the same spot as someone else. It wasn’t just a shared sense of place that brought them together, though. As with so many unlikely friendships, trash TV proved a common bond. ‘Love Island! That was kind of our bonding. We both watched it when we were filming. We’d talk about it the next day, “Can you believe what Dani said? Oh my God!”’ It’s generous of Turner to mention that he and Redmayne both grew up in Chelsea without mentioning that they were from different sides of the tracks. Turner was brought up on the Guinness Trust estate, lived in a flat with his mum and went to the local state school. It wasn’t penury, as he describes it, but it wasn’t the playing fields of Eton either. ‘There was like 20 of us on the estate and it was loving and caring and a real community. All I did was play football, break windows.’ When he wasn’t smashing glass on the estate he’d be inside watching films. ‘Me and my mum watched movies all the time. I think she figured out when I was a yearand-a-half or two years old that she could just put me in front of the TV and I’d watch, watch, watch.’ That grew into a love of cinema, and because Callum was a tall boy who looked older than his years, he and his mother went and watched all sorts of films, including some he shouldn’t have been seeing, on the big screen. ‘Mean Streets I’ve watched a lot. Five Easy Pieces. I saw Signs [M Night Shyamalan’s sci-fi horror] in 2002 when it came out. That taught me I don’t like scary movies.’ The film Turner references most is not some arthouse classic but the 1993 schmaltzer Free Willy. ‘I say it as a joke but I watched Free Willy a lot when I was a kid. I loved the idea of sticking it to the man – and freeing the whale. I always think there’s a metaphor in that, you know: freeing yourself from yourself. Knowing right from wrong and being a hero.’ Turner was good-looking and a bit of a show off too. He loved the performance aspect of playing football and he played to a high level as a youth but soon after he’d realised he wasn’t going to make it as a professional he was spotted by a modelling scout. He plays down his looks: ‘I always thought I looked like an alien, like Mr Burns from The Simpsons,’ but he travelled the world on the strength of them.

‘I don’t want to live anywhere else but London. I’m very lucky to travel to other places with work but really home is where I always want to come back to’

‘Basically it was like this really incredible opportunity to travel. I lived in Japan for six months. I lived in the States for about three or four. I stayed in Italy for a couple of months. I went over there when I was 18 and I just watched loads of films. That’s when I was like, “Should I try this?”’ ‘This’ was acting and it’s a profession that’s already taken him from TV hits like ITV’s Leaving to big budget movies like 2015’s Victor Frankenstein and now Fantastic Beasts. It means that, aged 28, he’s already seen the world in two separate jobs, but home remains London, the city he grew up in. ‘I don’t want to live anywhere else. I’m very lucky because, with work, going to other places is a luxury. But really home is where I always want to come back to. I miss it after a while, with my friends and just what I’m used to.’ The night before our interview, for example, Turner has been experimenting with poker. ‘I’ve never played it before. Do you know what? I won the first round because the rules were still in my head. By the second round I’d had a little bit more to drink, I couldn´t remember any of the cards and I started folding because I didn’t want to lose all my chips and I realised that I’d folded an ace and an ace is a strong card and after that… I was doomed.’ Like many born and bred city-dwellers, however, it means he loves the solitude of the countryside too as a change of scene. ‘The New Forest is lovely. I love horses and they’re just there, around you.’ If the image of the scowling bad boy petting a Thoroughbred seems a little incongruous, it all comes from his time on Channel 4’s cult hit Glue, when Turner played a stable boy. ‘I asked if I could go and be a stable hand so I just spent a lot of time doing that. I was leaving the house at five, getting the first Tube out to Rickmansworth which is a hell of a journey at six in the morning, getting there for seven, mucking them out, doing the whole thing, riding and then feeding them. I completely fell in love with the horses. They’re wild animals. And yet there’s a connection. It’s almost telepathic. It’s strange.’ Fantastic Beasts, you might say. And Callum Turner, a maverick himself, knows where to find them. n

ime to pimp your wardrobe, boys. As the world goes up in flames, fashion dictates that we peacock. I do love a classic, my cedar hangers are packed with them, but always apply them with a twist. Give yourself a wardrobe ramp-up, which you must approach with absolutely no fear. Contemporary maximalist is not for the shrinking violet. First up, the humble tie. You will rarely catch me in tie, and never at night. Like a boa constrictor wrapping its conformity around my neck, I prefer to add flourish without strangulation by way of the silk square – be it a polka-dot number tied as a neckerchief (Henry Poole is my go-to), or a long square, twisted and peeking out from the inside of a shirt. Favourbrook’s limited-edition checkerboard is printed with two different colours, changing depending on how you twist it. If you have to tie, go for interesting textures and bold colour rather than pattern – like raw silk at Richard James, a classic knitted silk number at Drakes, or a peach Escorial wool stripe at Norton & Sons. Individual style with a heavy dash of flair is what’s needed when pimping. The greatest snappy dressers – Sinatra, the Duke of Windsor, Bowie – all loved tailoring, but with a twist. Break from the pack by moving away from the ever-slimmer leg – the spray-on-jeans look of the past ten years is ready for a reboot. Try a little wider; the benefits of roominess in the leg with a higher waist will hide your problems and accentuate your assets. A LONG WAY FROM JOAN

Despite his Hollywood style childhood, Joan Collins’ son Sacha Newley prefers the role of observer to actor, and his paintings are the proof, says Matthew Bell

f all the places you might expect to find Joan Collins’s real-life dynasty, an industrial estate off Scrubs Lane is not one. I track down Alexander Newley, better known as Sacha, 53, to his compact artist’s studio overlooking Car Giant, the biggest car dealership I have ever seen. It’s a long way from the world of star-spangled glamour in which he grew up. Maybe that’s why he likes it. Certainly, to read Unaccompanied Minor, Sacha’s witty and honest memoir of growing up as the son of La Collins and Anthony Newley, the actor singer-songwriter, you feel he’s had quite enough A-list fabulousness. Motorbike rides with Steve McQueen, playing pool with James Caan, pool parties with Sammy Davis JR – all before he was 10. His childhood was extraordinary, even by La La-land standards. The book was published last year and didn’t hold its punches. A ‘dramatis personae’ on the first page introduces Collins as ‘UnVirginal Mother. Stargazer/Starlet/Star. Dynastic Diva. Conspicuous Absence. Tense Presence.’ She is later described as an ‘alpha Jezebel’ but as the book progresses, ending when Sacha is only

14, you realise there’s a deep admiration for her under it all. ‘She’s an amazing woman,’ he says today. ‘She knows how to live, and she really loves life, which is a gift.’ Despite the airing of their laundry – an interview with the Sunday Times got misquoted to suggest his father had paedophilic tendencies – Sacha and his mother are close. He has just returned from her house in the south of France, an August tradition when she gathers all her family round – he has a sister, Tara, and a half-sister from Collins’s third marriage (she’s currently on her fifth). He let her read the manuscript twice before publishing. Did she like it? ‘She loved it,’ he says. ‘No, maybe that’s too extreme. She liked it very much. Her take on things wasn’t exactly mine. But she respected my take on it. And to her credit she left it up to me to tell the story I had to tell.’ What emerges is the story of a boy who loses his parents to ‘an ogre called Show Business’. ‘My parents were both enslaved by the monster’s demands,’ he writes. Their marriage lasted six years, though for the latter half they were romantically involved with others. Sacha later went to boarding school in England and tried to become a playwright, but came to realise that painting was his medium. He says he likes

the confines of a canvas, within which everything must be resolved. He started applying paint to board as a means of distraction and came to discover a talent for portraiture. His work is powerful and distinctive, and sought after by collectors all around the world. ‘I love portraiture,’ he says. ‘I think it’s one of the most fascinating strands within visual art. All my favourite pictures are portraits, if not self-portraits. The depiction of the human being in paint is not just a great artistic achievement, it has tendrils in all different areas, like religion, valuing the human. So for me painting a picture is not just about getting a likeness. It’s a much deeper transaction. It’s much more about trying to answer those really big questions: who am I, what am I doing here, why am I living? All those basic essences which we all wrestle with. When I’m doing a portrait I want to get at that stuff.’ Having been immersed among actors all his life, Sacha has painted some of the great figures of film and stage: Oliver Stone, Judi Dench, Christopher Reeve. I wonder whether it helps to know a subject before you paint them? ‘Well, I think there are layers in a personality. There’s the middle layer: the story of their life, their unique body of experience, which you can’t know, and – in many cases – they can’t know. And then beneath that there’s a collective layer of what it’s like to be human, which we

all deal with: the pain, the difficulty, and so on, it’s our common software. That I can plug into immediately. And as interested as I am in the story, it’s an area I walk through to get to that plug-in point. When I’m painting, that’s what I’m painting.’ Some of his most powerful works are of actors in character: Adrian Lester as Othello; Kenneth Branagh as Archie Rice in The Entertainer; Nigel Hawthorne as mad George III. He is fascinated by ‘the mask and the not-mask’, the idea of capturing that moment in which the actor is channelling someone else. ‘It’s a paradox, acting. Being on the one hand untrue to yourself and true to yourself at the same time. Because you simply can’t be a good actor if you’re not channelling your reality, and yet you’re channelling it through something that’s not you. Go figure!’ His most rewarding sitter of recent years has been the actor David Suchet, because he took such an interest in the process. But perhaps the most fascinating are the portraits of his parents. He has done a couple from photographs of his father: one playing Ebenezer Scrooge, another of him as Prospero, naked from the waist up. His style is very much his own, although you can see hints of Freud and Bacon in some of them, both painters whose work he admires. ‘The great painters always stretch the medium,’ he says. ‘Bacon did some incredible things with paint.’ Not that he disparages the more traditional forms of portraiture, as practised by, for example, Sargent. ‘Not at all. It’s just that we know many more things now about the human being than when Sargent was alive. Sargent himself said you have to be careful to not become a mannerist.’ After periods in Los Angeles and New York, where his 15-year-old daughter still lives, Sacha is happy to be back in London. He lives in Queen’s Park and comes here to his studio every day to work. He also teaches, sometimes to groups, in the atrium of the Fulham Road restaurant Riccardo’s. But really he likes the solitary life of the artist: observing, painting, exploring – all within the reassuring confines of a canvas. ‘The artist is an outsider and shouldn’t be completely accepted. I’m never quite comfortable at the party.’ Not a sentence you’d ever hear his mother say. n

From Kandahar to Kensington: how the Marquis of Bowmont is leading from the front with Capstar Chauffers. By KITTY BUCHANAN-GREGORY

harlie Bowmont is an ex Blue and Royals Officer who spent two back-to-back tours of Iraq and Afghanistan leading his men into battle, then seeing the physical and mental consequences inflicted by war. On leaving he mused on what to do next: ‘I didn’t want to stop looking out for them just because I’d hung up my uniform, it’s the duty of an officer never to leave the boys behind. I wanted to give them a job that made them proud, but I didn’t know how to make that happen’. After a stint at Jaguar Land Rover, the light bulb moment came and Capstar – a high-end chauffer company employing ex squaddies – some with serious injuries, but all with

backgrounds as drivers – was launched in 2013. His fleet of polished Ranger Rovers and suited soldiers were an instant hit with HNWIs and hedge funders, and Capstar was soon the car to be seen in around St James or at Car Park No.1 at Ascot. It’s easy to see why as they delivered the latest spec cars with pinpoint punctual drivers and the extra security that a battle smart Marine or Guardsman affords, even if you are just driving down Piccadilly to lunch. The press picked up on the company’s launch and its feel good aspect of employing injured solders, but column inches focussed on Charlie’s own background. Describing himself as a soldier and businessman, he keeps very quiet about his ancestral home, Floors Castle, ‘Scotland’s largest inhabited castle’, in the Scottish Borders that he is due to inherit, along

with a dukedom and the rest of the Roxburghe Estate. He’s formally titled Charles Innes-Ker, Marquis of Bowmont and Cessford, and while it’s not difficult to write Capstar off as an easy thing for Bowmont to set up, he also didn’t need to fight in battle or look after his soldiers after the war ended. HQ is at Syon House in southwest London, ‘a friend’s estate,’ Charlie explains, ‘we’re just renting rooms’, where on the parade ground gravel drive are the immaculately polished Range Rover LWBs, Jaguars and brand new Audi A8s, with the ‘largest boot capacity in the market’. There’s also a chilled bottle of Pol Roger, Capstar’s champagne partner, and pair of crystal flutes ready for one client, but ‘if you prefer a diet Coke or a 1982 Mouton Rothschild instead we can arrange that,’ says Charlie. ‘We’re in the best place we’ve ever been, we still have many of our original drivers but now also employ ex Metropolitan Police,’ says Charlie. Regular clients are still Mayfair funds but Bond Street stores use them for VIP fashion launches, and media agencies have them on speed dial to ferry tricky Hollywood celebrities around. The Mayfair PAs also keep Capstar as their secret fix for ticketing and concierge needs: ‘A PA from a hedge fund phoned me up one lunch time and said she needed tickets to the Chelsea Flower Show. When we asked what the timescale was she said her boss was walking into the lift and wanted tickets on his iPad by the time he reached the car by the front door. We made that happen.’ The most significant change has been Capstar successfully winning SIA (Security Industry Association) status. ‘We have been asked to do more than just drive by our clients, and now work with a number of Private Members’ Clubs, families and businesses to provide Close Protection, Residential and Security Reviews.’ The biggest accolade, however, comes from Buckingham Palace Mews for whom they have been continuously been supplying cars for the last four years. ‘The Mews is quite literally the stable of the Palace looking after the horses, carriages and cars for royal occasions. While Her Majesty has a Bentley State Limousine for all her personal official engagements, we’ve provided cars for the extended family and visiting dignitaries who have been attending events at the palace.’ How does one get business at the Palace,

I ask. ‘We were invited to pitch for business and won,’ he discreetly replies. This continued service of cars also makes them eligible to apply for a Royal Warrant next year, arguably the poshest ‘badge’ to add to the existing regimental plaques on the office wall. At the other end of the scale Capstar does regular school and airport runs. At £60 per hour this is a brilliant way of getting bite-sized luxury and security: ‘We’ve also got a couple of female drivers now, including an ex staff driver to a brigadier; they are popular with female corporate passengers, Middle Eastern families and parents who want a regular school run. We also get the boarding school drop offs at the start of term and an occasional sports day where we provide the picnic too.’ Well, of course. Autumn is busy with several Six Nations events booked via Capstar’s concierge where they’ve provided tickets, cars and car park picnics. For shoots Capstar’s Range Rovers are spotted around Mayfair collecting guns from Purdey, William & Son or Holland & Holland and dogs and tweeds from private houses. All his drivers hold full shotgun licences and the cars come with gun boxes when needed. ‘If the shoot is in Yorkshire or Scotland our clients often fly up, our guys then drive up with the dog and guns, collect the client from the airport, stay with them for the duration of the shoot, then do the repeat journey home.’ Started with a passion for looking after his soldiers, Charlie has now established Capstar as London’s luxury chauffeurs. It’s a six-floor climb by ladder, but when you reach the top, Pienza, Montepulciano and Montalcino lie at your feet. It took me three years and extensive patience to restore it. From the top, you can also spot the Abbey of Sant’Anna in Camprena where The English Patient was shot.

Alessandro Dari is a chemist in Florence, who works during the day in a public pharmacy, but at night, he heads to his laboratory, near Ponte Vecchio, where he creates the most extraordinary and alchemical rings one can imagine.

What should never have seen the light of day? Solid gold taps. Where do you find inspiration? From the organic, the naturalistic and the animalier.

e’re cruising downstream past majestic mist-tipped mountains, buffalo wallowing at the riverside and longtail ‘taxi’ boats. Beside rubber plantations, banana trees and bamboo stilt houses. Fishermen casting out traditional nets from deserted white beaches. Mahouts bathing their elephants. And locals sieving for gold. The stuff of Asian adventure stories or Oriental fairy tales, perhaps. We’re on the RV Laos Pandaw: a handcrafted, teak-decked, Colonial-style, erstwhile cargo ship. It’s her 10-day Laos Mekong cruise from Chiang Khong (Thailand) to Vientiane (the old French capital in Laos): the first river expedition since pre-war days to traverse Laos. A three-country voyage that crosses landlocked Laos to touch Thailand and Burma at the once notorious Golden Triangle. We’ve been warned online to expect an ‘adventure’, including possible groundings on sandbars in the mighty Mekong and changes to the itinerary due to seasonal falls in water level. After all, we’re travelling to remote areas. Nothing is certain. Indeed we set sail a day late. ‘The vessel hit rapids going upstream and the engine wasn’t strong enough,’ reveals the engineer. By way of travel insurance against further ‘adventures’, I sit at the bow by the shrine the Captain has made offering rice, marigolds and incense to the spirits. But he negotiates the rocky Mekong and rapids expertly. He’s been working this river for 15 years.

Meanwhile, on board, the cabins are comfortable, the staff delightful and the food good. There are four à la carte courses for lunch and dinner: dishes like chilled cucumber soup, baked Mekong river fish with ginger and soya sauce, ostrich stroganoff and mango bread and butter pudding. Ours is the only pleasure ship we see during our days on the brown river that cuts a swathe through the heart of the country. Yes, there are occasional speedboats (their drivers wearing motorbike crash helmets), and fishing boats near villages. But sometimes we don’t encounter any other boats for days as we pass lush jungle, tiny tribal villages and tropical forests. On day four we transfer to a local boat to enter the Nam Ou River and visit the Pak Ou caves, clambering up hundreds of steps in the white limestone cliffs, leaving behind the river spirits and discovering lion figures that guard the cave entrance. There’s a Buddha convention inside: four thousand Buddha sculptures – 18th to 21st-century ones of bronze, wood and gold leaf, lacquer, ceramic and animal horn in two caves midst offerings of flowers, incense and candles. As we go back down the steps, a fluorescent green snake dangles watching us from a tree – like some biblical metaphor. Laos is home to many endangered species like the large antlered Muntjac, the Indochinese tiger and the Asiatic bear. But I see only a snake and butterflies.

Next is Luang Prabang – the highlight of the trip – with its dazzling wood carved monasteries. It’s the former royal capital and a UNESCO heritage site of more than 30 gilded wats (temples) at the sacred confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan River. It is famed for its history, frangipani trees and French cuisine; and for its weathered French colonial shopfronts and faded Indochine villas. Although it’s January – the warm, dry season – by morning it’s an uncharacteristic five degrees, with torrential rain. We huddle under umbrellas to inspect exquisite temples with elaborate red and gold pointy, multi-tiered roofs: some with mythical serpent cum dragon carvings, monumental golden Buddhas, gold-leafflecked red columns, and genuflecting locals. Plus we see the early 20th-century Royal Palace with its collection of 15th to 18th-century Buddha statues and ancient bronze drums. Back aboard, ten Lao perform a Ba Ci ceremony: offering bananas, coconut sweets and rice wine to the spirits. The singers chant for good fortune while musicians play traditional instruments. Then the troupe tie 14 blessed strings around our wrists. ‘If you take them off, don’t cut them,’ advises the purser. ‘And you must put them somewhere special.’ We rise at 5.30am the next day to see tak bat – when hundreds of monks in apricot robes usually leave the monasteries to walk the streets seeking alms from locals. But it’s raining so hard that they don’t arrive until 7am: barefoot, cold… and just 30 of them. The pious and tourists

sit on footstools, at kneeling height, handing out sticky rice balls and cereal bars – gaining spiritual brownie points while the monks accrue gold stars for demonstrating their vows of poverty and humility. Soon we’re back on the river again. There’s an unexpectedly wow! sight on day eight with the controversial 107-foot-high Xayaburi hydroelectric dam, the gates of which tower like something from a James Bond movie. Passing through it is like being in a giant’s enormous lock. The water drops from way, way above – cascading thunderously like a monumental waterfall to our side – and the crew pushes us off from the walls to avoid the ship hitting the sides as we pass through. A day later we’re at Ban Pak Yun village where the Hmong and Khmu tribes live; the former in ground-level bamboo huts, the latter in ones on stilts – and both boasting satellite dishes. Ragged children with catapults hunt birds; hunting dogs bark. It’s 15 miles from the nearest town. ‘The villagers say you’re the first foreign visitors they’ve ever had,’ says our guide, Keo, translating from Lao. On our last day we’re stuck in fog, grounded on a sandbank. The ‘book boat library’ that sails to remote villages is stranded nearby. aris, St Tropez, Bordeaux? No, the city most French people would actually like to move to is vibrant Toulouse. Nestled close to the Spanish border, this is an elegant metropolis of culture and history infused with the zest of youth. Toulouse is a breath of fresh air compared to the tourist-infested streets of Paris. Prices are low, the weather is warmer and the choice of cuisine is exceptional – it’s not all sausage and cassoulet. The medieval towns of the Tarn and Dordogne regions are just a day trip away, while the ancient city of Carcassonne is en route to the Mediterranean beaches. Toulousians gathered at bars and cafes overlooking the Garonne River. If the tables are full, they sit on the grass or spill onto the pavement. The Old Town revolves around the expansive Place du Capitole, which is as touristy as it gets. The distinct, red brick buildings have earned France’s fourth largest city the nickname ‘La Ville Rose’ – the pink city. Nearby are the Romanesque riches of the Basilica St-Sernin (currently undergoing an overhaul) and the mish-mash of styles that is the Cathedrale SaintEtienne. Musee des Augustins is a former convent that houses a treasure trove of Gothic statues. Excellent shopping includes a colourful mix of trendy boutiques on Rue Saint-Rome or the vintage stores that line the Rue de la Pomme and attract Toulouse’s abundant student population. Contemporary art galleries, music shops and tattoo parlours abound. End the day with a romantic walk down the footpath of the Canal du Midi, another waterway dissecting the city. A late evening snack should involve a bag of locally made candied violets, first brought to Toulouse centuries ago by Italian traders.

Visit the Les Abattoirs museum of contemporary art and its fantastic book shop (lesabattoirs.org/en). Explore Toulouse on foot – there are eclectic and interesting stores, with red brick buildings to explore at every turn. Enjoy the alfresco atmosphere at the Café des Artistes before moving on to some live music at The Petit London (lepetittou.com).

Nine years in the making, the hotel channels the essence of Megève. Nemo, a St Bernard rescue dog, lies curled up outside the front door, and a horse and carriage await to take you across the Mont d’Arbois plateau to the pistes. What’s your food philosophy? Keep changing what you eat… don’t eat the same boring old things all the time. Favourite ingredient that is in season right now and how are you using it? Can I have two? Porcini and figs. Figs have to be eaten fresh, when they’ve just been picked or fallen from the tree and are oozing with juicy red flesh. For porcini, I like to cook them with salted butter and garlic and eat them on toast.

TRUFFLE GNOCCHI

We get our truffles from the border of Umbria and Le Marche, on the east coast of Italy. Our annual truffle menu runs for lunch and dinner from October to January and draws crowds from across the capital. Our gnocchi are the perfect backdrop to the powerful and intricate flavour of truffles. INGREDIENTS SERVES 4 For the gnocchi

» 1kg Maris Piper, King Edward or Rooster

» 500g 00 flour » A large pinch of table salt » Olive oil for sprinkling For the sauce

» 250g salted butter chopped roughly » 200g freshly grated Parmesan » 50ml water » Sea salt flakes & freshly ground black pepper

» 25g fresh black (or white) truffle » Table salt for cooking

METHOD

Wash the potatoes, skins on, and bake or boil them until cooked. Cut in half, scoop out the hot potato flesh and push through a sieve. Add the flour and salt. Mix well until a dough is formed. If wet, add more flour. Taste to check seasoning. To shape the gnocchi, use a metal dough scraper or sharp knife, and cut into equal parts about the size of a small bread roll. Roll into chipolata-sized shapes about 1.5cm in diameter, then cut them into two cm pieces. Dust with flour and, one by one, pinch one side of it while pressing it over the head of a fork – thus creating grooves on one side and an imprint on the other. Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil. Add the gnocchi until they float to the top, and remove with a slotted spoon, putting straight into a bowl of iced water. Drain dry and sprinkle with olive oil. Keep to one side. For the sauce, add water and butter to a large frying pan on a medium heat. Stir until the butter has melted. Add the Parmesan and stir until melted. Remove from the heat. Season. The sauce should be pouring cream consistency. Too thick, add water; too runny, add Parmesan. Simultaneously, bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil. Add the gnocchi and cook until they float to the top. Remove with a slotted spoon, adding to the sauce. On a medium to low heat, stir until the gnocchi are coated. Spoon onto four warmed bowls. Shave thin slices of truffle over the top. Serve immediately.

Biggest mistake you’ve made in the kitchen? When I was a young commis chef I was doing a dish which required a soft boiled egg on the top. We’d soft boiled and peeled the eggs beforehand… my job was simply to heat it up and put it on top of the dish. I’d run out of hot water and the pressure was building, so I decided to microwave it. When the customer cut into the egg, it exploded all over her. Most memorable meal out? My first meal with my brother at The Walnut Tree near Abergavenny. Franco Taruschio was the chef-proprietor at the time, and it was here I discovered a restaurant without copious amounts of cream and butter. It completely changed my perspective on cooking. When was the last time you sent something back to the kitchen? It was a long time ago. I ordered salmon fillet, which arrived with a chocolate sauce instead of a balsamic reduction. When you’re not in the kitchen, where are you? I love spending time in my kitchen garden. Otherwise, if I’m not entertaining my irrepressible six and eight-year-old boys, I’m practising my ukulele. Who would you most like to take out for dinner and where would you take them? I’d take my wife and kids to Dorset for fish & chips or Liam Gallagher to one of the Rouxs’ restaurants.

As avid travellers and traders who constantly picked up new techniques, traditions and flavours, they’re an almost obvious starting point for an exciting new restaurant in modern-day London. The menu evokes the wonders of sharing between countries and cultures, with Ashkenazi chicken livers and Jerusalem bagels beautifully complementing crisp Barbarian falafel, creamy labneh and meat-stuffed Arayes. The resulting aromas are otherworldly, the service slick (even more impressive given it’s an open kitchen) and the queues not as long as rumoured. edged between the coast and the South Downs, Chichester in West Sussex has long been a honeypot for London leavers. Less built up than other parts of the Home Counties, buyers can enjoy sailing, racing, walking and windswept beaches, all within 60 miles of central London. ‘It’s a great spot for riding and dog walking,’ explains Alex Leigh of Hamptons International. ‘And Chichester itself is a Roman city with plenty of character and culture.’ Given that much of the local land is owned by estates such as West Dean and Goodwood, or forms part of the National Park or protected coastline, the area is surprisingly sparsely populated, according to Mark Crampton of Middleton Advisors (middletonadvisors.com). Further inland are fruit farms and vineyards and Cowdray Estate, the home of British polo. ‘It’s an active outdoorsy place with its own special microclimate and lovely beaches,’ explains buying agent Richard Trimbee (coastandcounties.com). ‘When the right house comes up, you have to pounce.’ Chichester prides itself on being West Sussex’s only cathedral city. It has a beautifully preserved Georgian centre with a late-medieval market cross and a wide array of shops and restaurants. As well as being useful, there is also plenty of culture, with the Chichester Festival each July and August attracting the best names in music and

theatre to the city. The Chichester Festival Theatre is one of the most highly regarded – and architecturally significant – regional theatres in Britain, while the Pallant House Gallery, which houses a worldclass modern art collection including works by Ceri Richards, John Piper and Graham Sutherland in an 18th-century townhouse and contemporary extension. ‘There is always something going on down here be it sporting or cultural – there is no danger of finding it too quiet,’ says James Machell of Savills. For a relatively small city, it also has plenty to offer in terms of education. Brighton College, Lancing College, Bedales and Winchester College are all within easy reach, while popular local prep schools include Westbourne House and the Prebendal in Chichester and Windlesham House in Pulborough. There are also a number of Ofsted-outstanding state primaries in and around Chichester and two highly regarded state secondary schools: Bishop Luffa and Chichester High School. ‘It’s an easy city to commute in to – you can live in the middle of the countryside yet minutes from the shops and schools,’ adds Machell. Buyers tend to fall into three categories: the weekenders, the families seeking forever homes and those downsizing from larger properties – and so fierce is the competition that house prices are strong, even in today’s financial climate. Values in and around Chichester increased by 15.8 per cent in the three years to June 2018,

According to Leigh, Chichester’s star is only rising, thanks to the move towards more flexible working arrangements, and a more active and holistic way of living. ‘It’s the ultimate lifestyle destination,’ he confirms. ‘Where else can you enjoy coast, country and culture on your doorstep?’
