APRIL 3 AND 4, 2021 WHAT WILL DEFINE OUR RESPONSE TO EASTER:

fear or faith?

CONTACT INFORMATION Please place this card in the offering or hand it in at the welcome center before you leave. Thank you! Change in contact information Name ____________________________________ Address__________________________________

Mark’s Easter story ends abruptly. The women do not see the risen Jesus, and they run from the tomb fearful and tight lipped. Some scholars think the meeting with the resurrected Christ was somehow lost from the earliest manuscripts of Mark’s gospel. Others say Mark ended it that way on purpose: the announcement of resurrection without the risen Jesus present is a call to faith and perseverance during times of hardship and persecution. Mark’s original readers were likely Roman Gentile believers suffering persecution in the mid 60’s AD. In the face of the unknown – an empty tomb and a STORY about resurrection, or the day-to-day uncertainty about safety for oneself and one’s family – how will people respond: with faith and trust, or fear and silence? What are the unknown moments of our lives right now, and how will we respond?

TAKING IT HOME

Here at First Church we value learning and living the story of Jesus. That means learning and living the scriptures that he used, and the scriptures that witness to his life on earth and his ongoing life among us in the power of the Holy Spirit. To help with that, we will read the entire New Testament through the year, and the Old Testament over the course of three years. We encourage you to journal what the Holy Spirit is saying to you through your time with Scripture each day using the S.O.A.P. method: S: Write the scripture passage that speaks to you O: Write down your observations about that scripture A: Write down how those observations apply to your life and what you’re going to do about them P: Write out a prayer expressing your heart to the Lord as He has spoken to you through His Word. For the week ahead, here are the daily readings: MONDAY, April 5 .............................................................................Mark 1, 2, 3 TUESDAY, April 6................................................................................... Mark 4-5 WEDNESDAY, April 7......................................................................... Mark 6, 7, 8 THURSDAY, April 8.................................................................................... Mark 9 FRIDAY, April 9.........................................................................Mark10; Psalm 62 SATURDAY, April 10...............................................................
