Eddie Daniels combines elegance and virtuosity in a way that makes me remember Arthur Rubenstein…he is a thoroughly well-bred demon. — LEONARD BERNSTEIN

Press Quotes

“It is a rare event in jazz when one man can all but reinvent an instrument, bringing it to a new stage of its evolution.” — LEONARD FEATHER, JAZZ CRITIC “Perfect synthesis between classical technique and jazz sensibility…blinding virtuosity.” — DOWN BEAT “Eddie’s debut album…will become the benchmark to judge all future recordings blending the world of classical music and jazz.” — QUINCY JONES

Featured Artists Eddie Daniels, clarinet, tenor sax/Hank Jones, piano/Richard Davis, bass/Kenny Washington, drums

Track Listing Mean What You Say • It Had To Be You • Passion Flower • Nagasaki • My One and Only Love • Why You… • Azure • The Touch of Your Lips • You and the Night and the Music • I’m Getting Sentimental Over You • My Little Suede Shoes • How Deep is the Ocean

Selling Points • Eddie Daniels is that rarest of rare musicians who is not only equally at home in both jazz and classical music but excels at both with breathtaking virtuosity • Daniels first came to the attention of jazz audiences as a tenor saxophonist with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. In 1968, a single clarinet solo on that group’s Live at the Village Vanguard garnered sufficient attention for Daniels to win Down Beat’s International Critics New Star on Clarinet award • Daniels’ overriding ambition is to reach as many people as possible with his music, to enlarge the audience for both jazz & classical music and at the same time tear down the walls separating them. In his hands, the music of Mozart can be as engaging as that of Charlie Parker, and a concert featuring both can be a uniquely rewarding experience for the audience • His personal appearances reflect the diversity of his albums. He has performed at jazz festivals and jazz clubs with his quartet as well as with the Cincinnati Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic, the Indianapolis Symphony and the Boston Pops • In the classical field, he has performed with orchestras including the London Symphony, the Rotterdam Philharmonic and the Tokyo Symphony, as well as the Vermeer, Orlando, Suk and Composers String Quartets • GRP release Memos From Paradise was a Grammy Award winner

Selling Points • Clarinet wizard Benny Goodman was born in 1909 in Chicago. He started his career in the band of Ben Pollack and later started his own famous orchestra to start the swing era in 1935. The band was extremely popular and earned its leader the title “King of Swing” • It is amazing how fresh and vigorous this group sounds, even though the musicians came from different musical environments. Roy Eldridge plays true to his ebullient swing beliefs, while Zoot Sims clearly shows his bebop influences – as does Toots Thielemans, at that time a true discovery both on guitar and harmonica • Ed Shaughnessy proved to be a solid drummer and, together with Charlie Short and Dick Hyman, formed the absolutely appropriate rhythm section to support the soloists • Goodman, true to himself, proved to be the brilliant clarinetist everyone expected him to be. He performed flawless runs & phrases and led sober but friendly through the entire show • This is not only a firm example of what jazz used to be 55 years ago; it is also an important document of a group featuring some of the innovators in jazz who have contributed their share to the development of this music and should not be forgotten • Benny Goodman’s music was recently featured on NPR’s list of the 100 Most Important American Musical Works of the 20th Century • Samples available – ask your Allegro account manager • Released here for the first time ever!

A blind street singer, he learned his stuff from Uncle Chump and Pink Anderson in the ‘30s • At 70, he rediscovered his unplugged genius with a repertoire that runs from soul classics to Piedmont blues • On his first recording, Sugar Man, listeners receive the true oral tradition of the blues. Stark’s timeless versions of familiar and obscure songs show us that deep-rooted blues are still alive and vibrant

Neal Pattman Prison Blues “ Pattman’s harmonica playing and vocals have that classic sound that can only come from someone who has been steeped in the blues all his life. Press Quotes “ Magic Slim is one of the great icons of the blues. Considered to be one of the greatest living practitioners of Chicago’s classic electrified Mississippi blues style, Magic Slim continues to blow blues audiences away with his powerful delivery of what many consider to be ‘real Chicago blues.’” — CRUZINBLUZ “Magic Slim is a large man. His voice is, if anything, even larger. The native Mississippian is a better-than-average guitarist as well…[on this] excellent disc showcasing Magic Slim’s aggressive, take-no-prisoners style, those two attributes are fully evident.” — METROACTIVE “ Magic is not slim…and he plays blues, just like he looks: formidably. Magic Slim is all Chicago blues. His musical world is small, but within it he is a master. He plays a Fender Jazzmaster through a tube amp that gives him a beautiful and soft, yet simultaneously tinny and full, sound. Combined with his booming and gruff voice, Magic can fill up any club with sound.” — POPMATTERS “ Magic Slim & The Teardrops proudly uphold the tradition of what a Chicago blues band should sound like. Their emphasis on ensemble playing and a humongous repertoire that allegedly ranges upwards of a few hundred songs give the towering guitarist’s live performances an endearing off-the-cuff quality: you never know what obscurity he’ll pull out of his oversized hat next.” — ALL MUSIC GUIDE

• Classic New Orleans R&B featuring the cream of New Orleans and Baton Rouge musicians, including Neal Brothers! • Born in 1941 in Baton Rouge, Bobby Powell – like many southern recording artists of his generation – began singing and playing gospel music. An accomplished pianist, he was influenced by Ray Charles, but soon developed his own highly individual sound • In 1946, Powell signed with producer Lionel Whitfield’s new Whit label out of Louisiana. This proved to be a fruitful relationship – by the early 1970s, Powell was a fixture on R&B radio and the southern “chitlin’ circuit” touring scene • Powell secured his biggest success in 1965 with “C.C. Rider” (#1 on the Cash Box R&B chart), a remake of a ‘20s blues standard. He obtained another hit with the funky “Do Something For Yourself ” (#21 R&B) from 1966, but his most impressive recording that year was “I’m Gonna Leave You” (#34 R&B), with its stinging blues guitar and a shouting gospel chorus • This is ‘70s Southern soul music at its finest – the first reissue of Bobby Powell’s material on the Hep Me label! • Great companion piece to the DVD reissue of the legendary The !!!! Beat TV shows • RIYL: Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, James Booker

Billy Larkin was thus able to work with a wide variety of artists, and wrote the songs “Leave It Up To Me” and “The Devil in Mrs. Jones” with Earl Thomas Conley • Larkin has recorded for Bryan Records, GRT Records, Sunbird, Casino Records Mercury Records and more

• Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla, Maestro de Capilla at Puebla Cathedral, presided over the most important center of music production in the New World during the mid-seventeenth century • His sacred works, almost all for double choir, show him to be a masterful composer, and were preserved by order of the church in the years leading up to Padilla’s death in 1664

• All the works on this disc are for double choir of eight voices and represent the height of musical pageantry as it was experienced at Puebla. They are recorded here for the first time! • Cappella has championed the music of Padilla for over a decade and gave the modern North American premieres of these works during their last two concert seasons. They also presented a yearlong residency on the music of Padilla at the University of California, Riverside • Cappella was founded in 1993 as Los Angeles Chamber Singers’ early music ensemble. Together, they form L.A.’s premier chamber choirs • The works recorded here complement Cappella’s effort to document this repertoire in historically-informed performances, begun with Music of the Mexican Baroque • The recording was made in the near-perfect acoustics of Mary Chapel on the Brentwood campus of Mount St. Mary’s College and was produced by the same team that brought you the best-selling Grammy-nominated Lauridsen: Lux Aeterna • Padilla’s own motet Ave Regina caelorum forms the basis for his parody mass • The psalm settings share the same virtuosic approach as the mass; the remaining two works are brief responds • The album’s subtitle, Sun of Justice, is drawn from Felix namque’s refrain and refers to themes of enlightenment and judgment carried in many of the texts • Service to all major national newspapers/trade papers and classical radio stations (broadcast, online and satellite). Follow-up calls soliciting reviews, interviews and airplay. Print ads in the Choral Journal (ACDA’s monthly) and Voice (Chorus America’s quarterly)

Christopher Hogwood leads near ideal performances… and they respond well to his crisp, period-instrumentinfluenced approach…wholly recommendable. — CLASSICSTODAY (ON VOL. 1)

Basel Chamber Orchestra/Christopher Hogwood, conductor/Isabelle Schnöller, flute/Omar Zoboli, oboe/Reinhold Friedrich, trumpet COPLAND: Appalachian Spring (complete ballet, chamber version) • Music for the Theatre • BARBER: Capricorn Concerto, Op. 21

• In June 1942, Erick Hawkins, the first man to join Martha Graham’s dance company, approached Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, the great Maecenas of contemporary chamber music, with the idea of commissioning a score from Aaron Copland for Graham • More than two years later, after many postponements, Appalachian Spring was first performed at the Library of Congress on October 30, 1944 • Copland was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his score the following year, and the Orchestral Suite from the Ballet has become one of the most popular classics of American music • Listeners familiar with the Suite will be surprised to hear the sonorities and additional music from the original 13-instrument version • Copland originally entitled his work Ballet for Martha. Graham found her title Appalachian Spring in a poem by Hart Crane • Copland wrote Music for the Theatre during the summer of 1925, the very first work commissioned by the newly founded League of Composers. Its score is permeated with the spirit of jazz • Samuel Barber’s Capricorn Concerto was premiered in New York on October 8, 1944. It is designed like a Baroque Concerto Grosso, with the same instrumentation as Bach’s second Brandenburg Concerto • The Kammerorchester Basel (KOB) is one of the leading chamber orchestras of Europe in international demand • The KOB is an orchestra without a permanent conductor. The musicians themselves create the unique artistic profile of the orchestra by participating in the selection of conductors, soloists and repertoire • Christopher Hogwood, pioneer of historical performance practice, is the KOB’s Principal Guest Conductor, and it was he who started this acclaimed recording project on Arte Nova a few years ago • Since founding The Academy of Ancient Music in 1973, Hogwood has gained international recognition for his performances of baroque and early classical repertoire with period instruments • For more than 40 years, he has also been performing music of the twentieth century, with a particular affinity for the neobaroque and neoclassical schools including many works by Stravinsky, Martinu˚ and others • Hogwood is Honorary Professor of Music at the University of Cambridge and Visiting Professor at the Royal Academy of Music

CLASSICAL “A group that sings as one voice, with Kopelman as a stunning lead singer… that the Kopelman Quartet can have it all – clarity of line and texture, plus richness of sound and a vast color palette – is not in doubt…the finale’s wild excitement [Prokofiev No. 2] came without sacrifice of direction or diction.” — ANN ARBOR NEWS

• Alessandro Bonci was one of a group of Italian tenors active at the end of the nineteenth and early in the twentieth centuries who exemplified the bel canto style of singing • Such was Bonci’s artistic importance in Europe that in 1906 he was invited by Oscar Hammerstein to appear in New York, in an attempt to attack the monopoly held in the Metropolitan Opera partly as a result of the sensational performances of Enrico Caruso • He became a firm favorite with operatic audiences worldwide, enjoying a truly international career • Contains the complete Fonotipia recordings from 1905–1907 • During a Covent Garden season at which Caruso and Bonci appeared, an eminent critic summed up certain artistic evaluations of the day in a way that will stand for all time: “There is no need in this place to make comparisons between the two great Italian tenors who are at the moment dividing the enthusiasm of opera goers; personal differences must always go for something in such matters and if Signor Caruso’s voice is rather more powerful, Signor Bonci’s is sweeter in quality.” — THE LONDON TIMES • Total playing time: 2 hours

Coro is the celebrated label of the renowned English choir The Sixteen, with support from the group’s own period-instrument orchestra The Symphony of Harmony and Invention. Its special reputation for performing early English polyphony, masterpieces of the Renaissance, and a diversity of twentieth century music is drawn from the passions of conductor and founder Harry Christophers. With 37 releases and counting, the label features classic titles formerly available on the Collins Classics line alongside several new, critically acclaimed offerings per year. “All hail the über-choir…” — THE INDEPENDENT

The Sixteen/Harry Christophers, director TALLIS: Mass “Puer natus est” • Motet “Suscipe quaeso” • SHEPPARD: Reges Tharsis • Libera nos • MANCHICOURT: Jubilate Deo • Reges terrae • GUERRERO: Ave virgo sanctissima • Ave Maria • Pastores loquebant ur

• After 27 years of worldwide performance, The Sixteen is recognized as one of the world’s greatest vocal ensembles, with a special reputation for clarity and beauty with precision and dramatic intensity • On Christmas Day 1554, the Spanish Armada was a long way off on the horizon. Mary Tudor had married Prince Philip of Spain, and in celebration of her pregnancy Tallis had composed the Mass Puer natus, which may well have been performed in St. Paul’s Cathedral on this special day • For this splendid ceremony the English Chapel Royal and choir of St. Paul’s were joined by Prince Philip of Spain’s Capilla Flamenca to sing music by great composers from both countries • This recording presents a number of works which were likely to have been performed by these choirs on this special occasion

Heinrich SCHÜTZ Musikalische Exequien CD: CRO 16036 (Q )

• To date The Sixteen and the Symphony of Harmony and Invention have made over 90 recordings, many award-winning, in a range of work spanning the music of 600 years, rediscovering and performing lost and little-known repertoire • From the devastation of Saxony in the Thirty Years War comes this very individual Requiem, first performed at the funeral of the aristocrat Heinrich Posthumus Reuß in 1636. The texts were engraved on his coffin in advance and the Prince, being a keen singer and not wishing to miss his own funeral music, took part in performances of the first part of it during his lifetime • Along with settings of the “Nunc dimittis” and “Lord’s Prayer” is the last work Schütz wrote, the celebrated and beautiful “Deutsches Magnificat” for double choir • Long neglected as a mere “precursor” of J.S. Bach, Heinrich Schütz has come to be seen as ever more important and interesting as more is learned about him, and his music more often performed

HANDEL: Selections from Solomon, Alcina, Ariodante & Hercules

This 2004 recording is a best seller, heavily promoted and advertised in BBC Music, Gramophone, IRR, and more. Gramophone Editor’s Choice Award, 11/2004 “Connolly seals her reputation as our best Handel mezzo in many years. The voice is richly colored, delicately used but incisively dramatic. She brings Handel to open-hearted expressive life, but never by tilting him towards Puccini; she knows the style through and through, and makes the maximum effort within it.” — FINANCIAL TIMES

VICTORIA: Requiem 1605 (Officium Defunctorum)

This recent (2005) SACD/CD hybrid surround sound recording features the celebrated Requiem of 1605, Victoria’s final composition, a work of beguiling beauty and sumptuous simplicity. It can be seen as the summation of both his art and the Spanish Renaissance tradition. The Requiem is preceded by Marian antiphons interspersed with three motets setting texts from the Song of Songs, accompanied by chamber organ and bajón, just as it may have been heard originally in the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales.

CLASSICAL Alessandro ROLLA Flute Quartets Mario Carbotta, flute/Members of Quartetto Erasmus ROLLA: 6 Quartets for Flute & Strings

CD: TCT 751805 (L)

Along with Cambini and Viotti, Alessandro Rolla (1757–1841) was one of the few Italian composers of his era who did not specialize in opera. He composed nearly 600 works, among them these “flute quartets” which formed a popular ensemble of the era. Rolla was an example of the most common type of musician of the time: a guest of aristocratic salons and thus dedicated to producing music for amateurs; a concert soloist, acclaimed in the great theaters; and a pedagogue, anxious to expand the repertoire of his own instrument or provide colleagues and students with the raw material at which to try their hand. He was an orchestral conductor at the Teatro alla Scala and a professor of viola at the Milan Conservatory from the year it was founded in 1808.

CASTELLO: Sonate Concertate in Stil Moderno, Libro Secondo (Venice, 1629) PRICE!

CD: TCT 590301 (L) File Under: Classical

Dario Castello flourished in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Despite the excellence and importance of his music, almost nothing is known about him personally. Even in his choice of titles – Sonate concertate in stil moderno – Castello demonstrates his confidence in presenting compositions written in an advanced concertato style. In his second book, Castello demonstrates his ability to combine virtuosic writing for instruments with a variety of contrasts in sonority and compositional style. The formal ideas often point to a latent sonata form as well as to a formal balance conceived in genuinely musical ways. The importance of this collection and its dissemination among contemporaries, as witnessed by the reprints in Venice and Amsterdam in 1658, stand in almost inexplicable contrast to the scarcity of biographical information concerning its composer.

CLASSICAL Giorgio BATTISTELLI Experimentum Mundi Instrumental ensemble/Giorgio Battistelli, directo BATTISTELLI: Experimentum Mundi—Opera di musica immaginistica

CD: STV 33730 (R) File Under: Classical

The works of Giorgio Battistelli (b. 1953) are often linked to the theater, and even his instrumental works are highly dramatic, with various instruments and elements considered as ‘characters’ in a drama. In 1974 he was a founding member of a leading avant-garde group in Rome and soon made his name as one of the most interesting composers of his generation. For the past 20 years, Experimentum Mundi has been one of the most-performed works of musique concrète, i.e., music made with everyday objects instead of conventional instruments. In this work, 16 everyday tools are lined up on stage along with 16 workmen in aprons, and an actor in evening dress. The actor begins reading from the eighteenth-century Encyclopedia of Diderot and d’Alembert while the workmen make astonishing music with their tools and materials.

CD: STV 33731 (R) File Under: Classical

Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687–1750) was one of the greatest composers for the lute after Bach himself, who was his almost exact contemporary. Weiss, like Mozart, was first taught by his father, and was a child prodigy who played before the Emperor at the age of seven. Though he grew up in Germany, in his early 20s he journeyed to Rome and learned the Italian style, which is evident in the works assembled on this disc from his early career. Paul Beier, a graduate of the Royal College of Music, London, is one of the most eminent lutenists working today. He has performed both as a soloist and in early music groups throughout Europe, Australia & North and South America, and is the founder and director of Galatea. Poor Georg Friedrich Kauffmann! He might be a famous composer today were it not for one fateful incident in his life. In 1722, when Johann Kuhnau (Cantor of Leipzig’s St. Thomas Church) died, the city council held a competition for his successor to this very prestigious position. Although Kauffmann was among the finalists, the council decided instead on Johann Sebastian Bach! Indeed Kauffmann’s organ works are of the highest order and hardly inferior to those of Bach, yet today his name is known only to specialists. The collection published as Harmonische Seelenlust contains 98 chorale preludes altogether, some of them specifying use of an oboe “placed in order to give the impression that it is an organ’s stop.” Born in 1970, organist Maurizio Croci holds diplomas in organ, composition and harpsichord from various schools, and a degree in musicology form Fribourg University in Switzerland. He has concertized throughout Europe and in Japan, performed J.S. Bach’s complete organ works in Berne to mark the 250th anniversary of the composer’s death, and recorded CDs for radio and television. On this CD he plays the Treutmann organ (1737) of St. Georg Church, Grauhof. 8% ALLEGRO RESTOCK DEAL [April 3, 2006 – April 28, 2006]

Sinfonias & Concertos, Op. 2 Insieme Strumentale di Roma/Giorgio Sasso, conductor ALBINONI: Sinfonie e concerti a cinque, Op. 2

Although most widely known today as the composer of the celebrated “Adagio” (actually an arrangement by another composer), Albinoni published ten collections of instrumental music as well as symphonies, ballets, sonatas, concertos and other works. The Opus 2 collection was first published in 1700 in Venice and was highly successful. Further printings followed at home and abroad. The pieces are arranged alternately as sonatas (called “symphonies”) followed by concertos, and back again, although there is no obvious musical link between them. It just seems to be an arrangement Albinoni found in Torelli’s Op. 5, and liked. Albinoni came from a wealthy family and wrote music for relaxation; thus he has always been considered an “amateur”; and yet Quantz ranked him alongside Vivaldi as the father of the definitive concerto form after it was popularized by Torelli and Corelli.

The current taste for Carissimi’s secular cantatas has somewhat obscured his sacred music, and Maestro Longhini was struck by the very secular title of a Mass listed among Carissimi’s works. Upon investigation he found it was based on themes from the previously composed secular cantata, thus the correspondence of names, if not of intent and genre. Le Istitutioni Harmoniche is an Early SPECIAL Music ensemble named after the famous treatise The Art of Counterpoint published in 1558 by SUPER-BUDGET Gioseffo Zarlino.

Every piece has a close, personal connection with Maria Callas • Callas relied almost exclusively on the craftsmanship of the Atelier Marangoni for her stage jewelry. On the basis of sketches by major directors such as Franco Zeffirelli and Luchino Visconti or famous costume designers such as Lila de Nobili, Marangoni created extraordinary works of art, which, despite having a sparkling life of their own, did not detract from the performances of the great opera singer. Marangoni used only Swarovski crystal gemstones in his jewelry on specific demand of the “Divina” • Swarovski acquired the Atelier Marangoni in 1999, and thus prevented the collection of Maria Callas’s stage jewelry from being dispersed all around the world

Live recordings 1956–1966 featuring a great pianist little remembered today, Monique de la Bruchollerie. Born in Paris to a family of musicians (including Boildieu and Messager among her ancestors), she graduated with the Premier Prix from the Paris Conservatory and a few years later became the first French winner of the Chopin Competition in Warsaw. She became a close friend of Emil Gilels and a protégé of Charles Munch, who launched her career after World War II. She played under the greatest conductors, such as Celibidache, Jochum and Karajan, but in 1966 a tragic car accident incapacitated her left hand. She died in another accident six years later. Because she did not like rigid ideas and favored the creativity of the moment, she was always reticent about making recordings, making these documents all the more precious.

Recordings mostly 1950–1955 by Ricardo Odnoposoff, an electrifying performer who belongs at the very top of the twentieth century violin legends! Born in Buenos Aires in 1914, he soloed with the Berlin Philharmonic at age 17 and soon won major competition prizes, coming in second to David Oistrakh at the Queen Elizabeth in 1937. He had a long and brilliant career touring five continents. In later years he was a violin professor in Vienna, Stuttgart and Zurich. His recording legacy demonstrates a great musicality, a brilliant technical command of the violin and an exciting, penetrating big sonority.

Mario Lanza Mario Lanza “ On these programs Lanza is warm, appealing, manly, charismatic and full of vitality. On some occasions his voice sounded coarse, thick and labored. But here it has a glow – the full voice rings, the mezza voce is sweet. When he sings you see that his tongue has a furrow down the middle, as advocated by many voice teachers.” — STEFAN ZUCKER

• La Juive is a spectacular five-act grand opera with high drama, gigantic set pieces, and thrilling music – the Romantic era’s version of Cinemascope. Seldom mounted today due to cost, it can still be greatly enjoyed in the theater of the imagination • Live performance of an important modern revival in London, 1973 • This was one of the great tenor Richard Tucker’s last appearances in public, at age 60, not long before his death. And it is one of the most emotional stage appearances ever captured on disc: when he sings the opera’s most dramatic aria, “Rachel, quand du Seigneur,” the audience goes wild • Jacques Halévy (1799–1862) studied at the Paris Conservatory with Cherubini and at age 20 won the highest student honor, the Prix de Rome. He was immediately engaged as a professor, and taught harmony, counterpoint and composition for many years to students such as Gounod, Massé, Saint-Saëns, Lecocq, and also Bizet, who married one of his daughters after his death • Despite his heavy academic responsibility, Halévy composed 38 lyric works for the stage, a majority of them light operas, but ten in the French “grand opera” form

• Another long-neglected masterpiece, Macbeth is today one of Verdi’s most popular operas following successful revivals in recent years like this dramatic 1970 performance. With a cast like this, and Böhm conducting, it couldn’t lose • Sherrill Milnes, the great American baritone of his era, is in glorious voice here and turns in a magnificent portrayal of the tormented hero • Soprano Christa Ludwig, known better for Lieder and German opera, is perhaps the biggest surprise here, in one of the most thrilling and dramatic portrayals of Lady Macbeth since Maria Callas • The conducting of Karl Böhm also comes in for special praise, as one of the tightest and most dramatic readings ever caught on record • Macbeth was Verdi’s favorite of all his early operas, as evidenced by the great care he took with it even many years after its premiere • The first performance took place on March 14, 1847 and was warmly applauded. Years later, however, Verdi heavily revised and even partly recomposed Macbeth, and this version, first given in Paris at the Théâtre Lyrique on April 19, 1865, is the one always heard today

RESPIGHI: La fiamma (complete opera)

MOZART: Don Giovanni (complete opera)

Respighi composed several operas, of which La Fiamma is generally considered the most successful. Enchanted by the Byzantine-era mosaics in Ravenna churches, Respighi had long wanted to write an opera in such a setting but no libretto suggested itself. When the composer’s regular librettist, Claudio Guastalla, suggested an opera adapted from the stage play Anna Pedersdotter, the Witch, by Norwegian dramatist Hans Wiers Jenssen, Respighi felt it could be recast in early medieval Ravenna. The result was La fiamma, which had a well-received premiere at the Royal Opera House in Rome in January 23, 1934 with the composer conducting. Live performance, Milan, August 7, 1955.

This amazing all-star performance of “the greatest opera” is taken from a live performance in London in February 1962. Some of the most legendary singers of that era are featured, with England’s beloved character-baritone Geraint Evans as Leporello, and one of the greatest Italian baritones, Cesare Siepi, in the title role. No introduction, of course, is needed for the legendary conductor Sir Georg Solti, one of a handful of the top conductors of the twentieth century. First performed in Prague on October 29, 1787, Don Giovanni has come to be the opera most often nominated as “greatest of all time.”

PUCCINI: La rondine (complete opera)

WAGNER: Das Liebesverbot (complete opera)

Puccini first got the idea for this work during a performance of an operetta he was attending in Vienna. The directors of the theater approached him at intermission and offered a large fee if he would write something for their stage. Puccini agreed, but to a full-scale light opera rather than an operetta with spoken dialogue. It would be set to a German libretto, then translated into Italian by Giuseppe Adami. The Vienna premiere never took place, however, due to the First World War. The first performance was eventually arranged for Monte Carlo on March 27, 1917. This live performance from 1971 brings out all the best in it.

Wagner took Shakespeare’s play Measure for Measure as a framework for the plot of his second opera. Despite uneven inspiration and uncertain focus, there are many memorable scenes in the opera and for the first time Wagner employs the leitmotif technique for which he would later be so famous. The premiere at Magdeburg on March 29, 1836 was a disaster, with most of the singers not knowing their parts thoroughly. A planned second performance, for which only three people showed up, was cancelled when a fistfight broke out between some of the cast backstage. Wagner later called Das Liebesverbot a “youthful indiscretion” and presented the score to his patron King Ludwig II of Bavaria with an apologetic poem.
