In 1957 this song became the Bobbettes' first hit. The song made them the first girl group with a number 1 R&B hit and top 10 American pop hit.
The song was written by the Bobbettes themselves and got inspired by a schoolteacher that the girls despised. But their record company told them to make the song into a loving song. A few years later, 1959, the Bobbettes produced a sequel to the song: “I shot Mr. Lee”. This song remained unreleased.
