Runner Lyrics
Behind you another runner is born
Don't look back
You've been there
See the mist as your breath hits the air
And it's underneath the moonlight, passing some
Still your heart beats in the moonlight, like a drum
Through the night, through the dawn
Behind you another runner is born
Don't look back
You've been there
Feel the mist as your breath hits the air
And it's underneath the moonlight, passing some
Still your heart beats in the moonlight, like a drum
And you will run your time
A shooting star across the sky
And you will surely cross the line
To pass on the flame
Sun come up, sun go down
Hear the feet, see the sweat on the ground
Keep your cool
Though you can't see what's in front of you
And it's underneath the moonlight, passing some
Still your heart beats in the moonlight, like a drum
And you will run your time
A shooting star across the sky
And you will surely cross the line
Just to pass on the flame
Pass on the flame
Through the night, through the dawn
Behind you, another runner is born
Don't look back
You've been there
See the mist as your breath hits the air
And it's underneath the
Moonlight passing some
Still your heart beats in the moonlight like a drum
And you will run your time
A shooting star across the sky
And you will surely cross the line
And it's underneath the moonlight, passing some
(A shooting star across the sky)
Still your heart beats in the moonlight, like a drum
(And you will surely cross the line)
And you will run your time
(To pass on the flame)
A shooting star across the sky
(To pass on the flame)
And you will surely cross the line
(And you will run your time)
And it's underneath the moonlight, passing some
(A shooting star across the sky)
Still your heart beats in the moonlight, like a drum
(And you will surely cross the line)
And you will run your time
A shooting star across the sky
And you will surely cross the line
About
Songwriter Ian Thomas saw an amazing thing on the news…a one-legged cancer victim on a three thousand mile run across Canada to raise awareness and money. And saw this man, Terry Fox, die before he made it.
Moved by that strength and tragedy, he wrote this song. “I wanted to capture that gallantry, the importance of passing on the flame.”
Manfred Mann, whose success centers almost purely around reworking mediocre songs by other artists into brilliant covers, did precisely that in this case, releasing the song right before the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. It therefore garnered heavy airplay even on the TV networks to promote their coverage of the games, reaching 22 on the Hot 100, Manfred Mann’s second-highest charting single, after their #1 cover of Bruce Springsteen’s song Blinded by the Light.
