Ghost Riders in the Sky Lyrics
[Verse 1]
An old cowboy went riding out
One dark and windy day
Upon a ridge, he rested
As he went along his way
When, all at once, a mighty herd
Of red-eyed cows he saw
A-plowing through the ragged sky
And up the cloudy draw
[Verse 2]
Their brands were still on fire
And their hooves were made of steel
Their horns were black and shiny
Their hot breath he could feel
A bolt of fear went through him
As they thundered through the sky
For he saw the Riders coming hard
And he heard their mournful cry:
[Chorus]
Yippie-yi-ooh, yippie-yi-ooh, yippie-yi-ooh
Yippie-yi-yay, yippie-yi-yay, yippie-yi-yay
Ghost Riders in the sky
[Instrumental Interlude]

[Instrumental Interlude]
[Verse 3]
Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred
Their shirts all soaked with sweat
He's riding hard to catch that herd
But he ain't caught 'em yet, woah
'Cause they've got to ride forever on
That range up in the sky
On horses snorting fire
As they ride on, hear their cry
[Verse 4]
As the riders loped on by him
He heard one call his name
"If you want to save your soul from hell
A-riding on our range
Then, cowboy, change your ways today
Or with us you will ride
Trying to catch the devil's herd
Across these endless skies"
[Chorus]
Yippie-yi-ooh, yippie-yi-ooh, yippie-yi-ooh
Yippie-yi-yay, yippie-yi-yay, yippie-yi-yay
Ghost Riders in the sky
Ghost Riders in the sky
Ghost Riders in the sky
Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred
Their shirts all soaked with sweat
He's riding hard to catch that herd
But he ain't caught 'em yet, woah
'Cause they've got to ride forever on

Ghost Riders in the sky
Ghost Riders in the sky
Ghost Riders in the sky

Genius Annotation
Originally by Stan Jones in the late ‘40s, then performed by Burl Ives, Johnny Cash’s creation is considered the definitive country arrangement (not to dis the mileage and creativity of the Southern Rock version performed by the Outlaws after Cash’s cover of the tune).
DevilDriver wisely selected it as one of the covers of country-songs-gone-metal on their Outlaws Til The End album. It has always seemed to cry out for a Rockin' metal treatment but don’t take my word for it.
Catching the ears of the Cash Family themselves, Johnny Cash’s son John Carter Cash and wife Cristina Cash ultimately performed on the tune as well. (Source – Blabbermouth; et. al.)
