In his Billboard breakdown of Narrated for You, Alec shared:
“If I Killed Someone For You” is about changing for someone you love. It’s a bit of a different and darker song for me.
So the inspiration for the song is when maybe you’re in a relationship, it could be a friendship or it could be a romantic relationship, where you feel like you have to change the person you are to be with the other person. So maybe there’s parts of you that, maybe, the other person doesn’t like and you’re like, “Well, if I change that about me, maybe they’ll like me more.” And that’s what this song is about. It’s about really, really wanting to be with someone and altering your personality for them. People are like, ‘Well, that doesn’t really sound like it would be a hit if you’re gonna kill somebody in your song.’ And, I’m kinda like, ‘Oh well, but, I wanna talk about that.’ And also, the song, for me, I always wanted to be a rapper. But then, I grew up, and I realized that’s just not possible. I’m not cool enough to be a rapper! So, I was like; All right, well, how can I be like my heroes? Eminem has a bunch of songs like “Crazy On You.” That was one of the inspirations for this song. He also has a song called “Kill You.” And so, I was like, “How do I do my own version?” I also don’t really wanna kill anybody. But, you find out later in the song that I didn’t. It’s just a metaphor. I think in his song, it was more of like, I really do wanna kill someone.
