Neowerdermannia

Post by Phil_SK »

Is anyone else growing these? There is little mention and only a couple of photos of them in the forum archive. I was quite surprised to see one of my little seedlings pushing a bud through a few weeks ago. I haven't seen the flower open very much due to work and dull weather today.

I'd love to see what I can expect as it matures if anyone else is growing them.

Used to have them many years ago Phil, both vorwerkii and chilensis, but never had peruviana, though that is often considered synonymous with chilensis. Don't have any photo's now I'm afraid, but there is a slide show for chilensis here:-

N. vorwerkii in habitat here:-

As I recall N. vorwerkii is eaten as a vegetable in habitat.

I have four plants of this genus. They flowered a few weeks ago. The plant in the enclosed picture is a grafted plant but my other plants of this species are not grafted.

That's beautiful! So I can expect the flowers to open a bit more on the right day. (tu)

Interesting. One of mine has a dirty white flower, the other has a flower very pale pink inside tending to almost brownish outside.

They were sown in Jan 09, and obviously not grown in ideal conditions.

I find them to be fairly slow growing anyway.

Anyone have N. peruviana for swaps? I have some (small!) seedlings of N.vorwerkerii I'd swap for it - and other things too.

I have seedlings of N. vorwerkii sown in 2010 which flowered this year for the first time, so not that slow in my opinion.

Hmm. I have one which is about 20 years old, and only 3-4cm across. Probably too small a pot!
