Thelocactus hexaedrophus is found in the north eastern region of Mexico, specifically in Nuevo Leon, San Luis Potosi, and Tamaulipas. There are two distinct forms - nominate and ssp. lloydii, which can be distinguished by slight differences in tubercle appearance and altitude. The nominate form of T. hexaedrophus typically grows between 1000 to 2000 meters above sea level, while T. hexaedrophus ssp. lloydii thrives at higher altitudes of 2200 to 2300 meters. The cactus has a single stem and generally has a round shape, measuring around 3 inches in height and 6 inches in diameter. It features plump tubercles that may have some farina on the flesh, and usually have slightly flattened tips instead of pointed ones. The color, length, and amount of spines can vary, depending on the specific location or variety.
