English: Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) jumping in the air and splashing the water at Ísafjarðardjúp (Iceland). The reasons why whales practice breaching are still unknown today. Some hypotheses among others are that breaching is done in order to either communicate, court, assert dominance, warn of danger, remove parasites from the skin or play. Image set number 2 out of 5.

Les raisons pour lesquelles les baleines sautent hors de l’eau sont encore inconnues aujourd'hui.
