Cactus Ferocactus Herrerae

His scientific name honors the biologist who discovered him, Alfonso L. Herrera.

The Ferocactus Herrerae is also one of the first cacti that I had and that, today, continues to live. It can also be found by barrel cactus or demon tongue among others. It grows in globular form until it has reached its maximum diameter size, then begins to grow in height, registering numbers up to two meters high by fifty centimeters in diameter. It is light green and the most characteristic one might say that it is the spines.

In this species, the ribs are very marked and can be seen with the naked eye, as are the spikes. It has between thirteen and fifteen ribs when it reaches adulthood and the spines, is a dark red at the base and is clarified as it reaches the tip. It has no radial spines, all of which are central, which are between seven and nine that open outwards and one of which is completely flat, much longer than the others and with the curved tip (ham type).

The flowering is practically non-existent. It is very rare for flowers to emerge in those cacti that have not yet turned fifteen, but when they are old enough, they produce flowers in abundant yellow, purple or purple colors between spring and summer. When these have been passed, you must be aware that the seeds that may come out will be your only way to reproduce this fantastic specimen if you wish, as it is not a species that usually makes little plants. It needs to be in a very bright place with direct solar radiation, especially if you want flowers to reproduce it and create new specimens.

Finally, irrigation is abundant especially in the hot season. During summer it can be irrigated once a week, in spring if it is very hot, we can also afford to do once a week, if not, with a stroke every fortnight there is more than enough. In autumn, it must be almost nil to not provide water when the cold comes. Its greatest enemy is excess humidity because it can cause death, and also fungi that can obviously kill it.
