Walk around Shanghai, and you’ll see a hodgepodge of art deco, beaux-arts, gothic, neoclassical and traditional shikumen buildings, as well as countless soaring, futuristic office towers – evidence of the city’s long history and bright future as a center for global commerce.
At Google Shanghai, we continue the tradition of connecting mainland China with the rest of the world. Our sales Googlers help Chinese advertisers reach audiences across the country and around the world. And our engineers are building products with a global reach, whether it be helping people communicate with one another through Google Translate, find great content through Image and Video Search, or connect with customers through the Display Ad Builder.

A lot of our engineering work focuses on advertising products for global markets, like AdSense, AdWords and AdMob. We’re particularly focused on developing display-advertising features - we were a major contributor to the Display Ad Builder, for example. We’ve pushed Image and Video Search forward, and our notable launches have included Translate for mobile and Chrome. On the sales side, we work with multinational companies and ad agencies to create marketing strategies and campaigns. We’re also always trying to educate small and medium-sized businesses about how they can reach markets here and abroad using our products (for instance, hosting an annual Partner Day), and are working to increase Android adoption in the mobile market.
Since opening in 2007, we’ve been in a building steps away from People’s Square in the traditional city center, the Puxi district. But we just moved across the Huangpu River to the 60th and 61st floors of the Shanghai World Financial Center, the fourth-tallest skyscraper in the world, where we can see Puxi district landmarks like the Bund (known locally as Wai Tan). The office is circular, offering an a stunning view of the Huangpu River (a major tributary of the Yangtze River) from every window.
We have a mentoring program bringing together younger and more experienced engineers. We host tech talks, and take part in local professional events and organizations. We have leadership training and tuition-reimbursement programs. We encourage Googler input into training programs. And that’s just the short list.
Too much to mention here! We have weekly TGIFs, with food from around the world. We have a community electric guitar. We have an art wall, where Googlers can show off their creative chops. And we love getting to know our Googlers’ families through events like “Take Your Child to Work” Day, and our annual Halloween and Christmas celebrations.
For engineers, we’re looking for ability in coding, algorithm development, data structures, design patterns and overall analytical thinking. On the sales side, we’re looking for tech savvy, communication and presentation skills and a deep understanding of business and marketing. Across the board, we’re looking for smart, driven people who are self directed, good at solving problems and work well in teams.
Between our Shanghai and Beijing offices, we do quite a bit with communities throughout China. We created “Caring for China - the Google China Social Innovation Cup” in 2008 to empower young people in China to address social issues through grassroots solutions. It has been a big success - in 2010, we received over 18,000 project proposals from students at over 1,000 universities, and had 28 winners ranging from those seeking to protect China’s historic relics to those interested in reducing carbon emissions. The Google Grants program has also supported a number of Chinese organizations, from CoachArt to Room to Read. And we’re providing ongoing support to help Sichuan province in Western China rebuild after 2008’s earthquake. We helped fund construction of 15 Google Quake Relief Hope Schools in Mianyang. And in partnership with MercyCorps, Save the Children, Doctors without Borders and others, we have committed rescue and relief support to help Sichuan focus on rebuilding and rehabilitating.
